Waiting requires courage, patience, and trust in the Lord. “Wait for the Lord; be strong… yes wait for the Lord! (Ps 27).

Advent-humility is an invitation to gaze upon the poverty of the Child. Christ emptied Himself to show us the humility of the God who enters into our humanity. Advent is a time to forget the self and learn from the meekness of the Child. “Learn of me for I am meek and humble of heart” (Matt. 11).

Advent-longing becomes a pilgrimage of the heart in search of its true homeland. Our hearts are restless until they can rest in the Child’s pres- ence. “Like a deer that yearns for running streams, so my soul is yearning for you my God. My soul is thirsting for God, the God of my life” (Ps. 42).

Advent-penitence prepares the soil of our soul to receive the Child. It is more than exter- nals; our soul must also be disencumbered. Greater or lesser sins have led us away from the only true source of goodness and beauty. A re- pentant heart during Advent will guide us to the manger. John the Baptist tells us, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matt. 3). The kingdom of heaven comes to us in a manger.

Advent-joy opens our heart to childlike won- der. The natural state of our soul is happiness. We sense that the fulfillment of every joy is to be found with this Child in the manger. “Shout for joy, O daughter Zion! Sing joyfully, O Israel! Be glad and exult with all your heart” (Zeph. 3).

Advent-hope continually searches the horizon for His coming. Like the wise men following His star, we too seek this king of kings. We might be weighed down by past experiences in life or feel disheartened. The Advent season of hope impels us to shrug off the past and embrace the coming Christ-Child. The anticipation of Advent enlarges and quickens the heart. “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light” (Is. 9).

Advent-Mary invites us to enter into her own journey of Advent. She bears within her body the Son of God, yet she beckons us to do likewise in our soul: to nurture and bear Christ into the world. Holiday Parish Office Hours Advent is a time with the contemplative Mary. She “kept all these things, pondering them in her Thursday, December 20, we close Monday, December 31, we are heart” (Lk 2). at 4:30 p.m. and will reopen Dec. closed and will reopen Wednesday, 28 for regular half day on Friday.
