Waiting requires courage, patience, and trust in the Lord. “Wait for the Lord; be strong… yes wait for the Lord! (Ps 27). Advent-humility is an invitation to gaze upon the poverty of the Child. Christ emptied Himself to show us the humility of the God who enters into our humanity. Advent is a time to forget the self and learn from the meekness of the Child. “Learn of me for I am meek and humble of heart” (Matt. 11). Advent-longing becomes a pilgrimage of the heart in search of its true homeland. Our hearts are restless until they can rest in the Child’s pres- ence. “Like a deer that yearns for running streams, so my soul is yearning for you my God. My soul is thirsting for God, the God of my life” (Ps. 42). Advent-penitence prepares the soil of our soul to receive the Child. It is more than exter- nals; our soul must also be disencumbered. Greater or lesser sins have led us away from the only true source of goodness and beauty. A re- pentant heart during Advent will guide us to the manger. John the Baptist tells us, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matt.
