The Notion of Song, Identities, Discourses, and Power: Bridging Songs with Literary Texts to Enhance Students’ Interpretative Skills Elroy Alister Esdaille Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Elroy Alister Esdaille All Rights Reserved Abstract Sometimes students struggle to interpret literary texts because some of these texts do not lend themselves to the deduction of the interpretative processes with which they are familiar, but the same is not true when students pull interpretations from songs. Is it possible that students’ familiarity with songs might enable them to connect a song with a book and aid interpretation that way? This study attempted to explore the possibility of bridging songs to literary texts in my Community College English classroom, to ascertain if or how the use of song can support or extend students’ interpretive strategies across different types of texts. I investigated how songs might work as a bridge to other texts, like novels, and, if the students use songs as texts, to what extent do the students develop and hone their interpretative skills? Because of this, how might including songs as texts in English writing or English Literature curriculum contribute to the enhancement of students’ writing? The students’ responses disclosed that the songs appealed to their cognition and memories and helped them to interpret and write about the novels they read. Moreover, the students’ responses revealed that pairing or matching songs with novels strengthened interpretation of the book in a plethora of ways, such as meta-message deduction, applying contexts, applying comparisons, and examining thematic correlations. -

Long) and The Sin-Eater: A Breviary JAMES McCARTIN: Good evening. Welcome to Fordham. I am Jim McCartin, Director of the Fordham Center on Religion and Culture. I have to say that it is a particular thrill for me tonight to welcome here all of you, to be part of this conversation between the two very best people I could think of to discuss our mortal end. It is a topic that, I have to admit, I can never get enough of. It was at the tender age of eight that I began one of my still-favorite pastimes, which is to say, scouring the obituaries. In my perhaps somewhat peculiar point of view as a fully grown adult now, I contend that there are few things more satisfying than a proper funeral. Some will say — and perhaps McDermott and Lynch will agree with this — that my interest in death and in its many permutations runs deep in my Irish American heritage. But for me I gather it is something more than just the peculiarities of my ancestral identity. In studying the death notices as a young kid, what I was really trying to figure out, I think, was how the families of my hometown of Troy, New York, formed webs of relation with one another — how they were connected, who they married or loved, what institutions and organization formed them into the ordinary and sometimes, rarely, extraordinary people that they were. -

The Sixth Act: An Event History 2004-2005 Academic Workshop: The Sixth Act: A New Drama Initiative This workshop will officially launch The Sixth Act, MCC's new Drama Initiative, so in addition to mocking a rehearsal for Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, we also will talk about the initiative and its goals. Everyone interested in drama--for personal, political, artistic, and/or pedagogical reasons-- is invited! Academic Workshop: Mamet, Harassment, and the Stage The workshop will focus on interdisciplinary approaches to a dramatic text, using David Mamet’s provocative, challenging play Oleanna as a case study. Oleanna, which is widely taught and performed, tells the story of a college student who issues a formal sexual harassment complaint against her college professor. The play is difficult in part because it’s difficult to tell which character is the real victim—raising real questions about different forms of power. More than one version of a key scene will be shown and then a group of MCC colleagues from different academic perspectives will offer insight into the text based on their individual backgrounds. The idea is that a single dramatic text can yield multiple readings, and that we all are better equipped to approach a dramatic text when we have a wider understanding of some of these readings. Congratulations to the ten nominees: The 2019 BIO Award Recipient: James McGrath Morris James McGrath Morris first fell in love with biography as a child reading newspaper obituaries. In fact, his steady diet of them be- came an important part of his education in history. In 2005, after a career as a journalist, an editor, a book publisher, and a school- teacher, Morris began writing books full-time. Among his works are Jailhouse Journalism: The Fourth Estate Behind Bars; The Rose Man of Sing Sing: A True Tale of Life, Murder, and Redemption in the Age of Yellow Journalism; Pulitzer: A Life in Politics, Print, and Power; Eye on the Struggle: Ethel Payne, The First Lady of the Black Press, which was awarded the Benjamin Hooks National Book Prize for the best work in civil rights history in 2015; and The Ambulance Drivers: Hemingway, Dos Passos, and a Friendship Made and Lost in War. He is also the author of two Kindle Singles, The Radio Operator and Murder by Revolution. In 2016, he taught literary journalism at Texas A&M, and he has conducted writing workshops at various colleges, universities, and conferences.
