Studies on foundation and truth in Phenomenology a dissertation by Tobias Keiling Doctoral Supervisor: Prof. John Sallis Abstract: This dissertation gathers four studies on related topics in the phenomenological tradition and Martin Heidegger’s philosophy in particular. Methodologically, it addresses the question as to how a reading of a philosophical text can offer access to the phenomena relevant for philosophy. Beginning with a reading of one his latest lectures on the end of philosophy and the the potential of phenomenology (The End of Philosophy and the Task of Thinking), the first chapter questions Heidegger’s dismissal of the notion of ground in this lecture, arguing that an innovative reading of a passage from Contributions to Philosophy can address a problem left unresolved in the lecutre. Instead of reducing it to its alleged function in metaphysics, I propose to explore the semantic and descriptive potential of ‘ground’ and related notions outside of the ontological and metaphysical discourse. The second chapter inquires about the particular position of On the Origin of the Work of Art in the context of Heidegger’s theory of truth. In contrast to an interpretation highlighting the function of art in the so- called history of Being, the artwork essay is shown to display a specific form of transcendental argument aiming to disclose the ‘clearing’ as the condition of possibility of phenomena. Particular attention is paid to Heidegger’s discussion of untruth as concealment because the distinction between a denial (Versagen) and a restraint (Verstellen) of truth elaborates an important difference in discussing phenomena of negativity. The third chapter explores the notion of ‘earth.’ The attempt is made to distinguish four phenomenal traits specific to earth by not only relying on Heidegger’s discussion and the examples he gives in On the Origin of the Work of Art but by also connecting these to discourses on earth both in one of Husserl’s later manuscripts (Foundational Investigations of the Phenomenological Origin of the Spatiality of Nature) and the philosophy of nature in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. The discussion is oriented by an interpretation of two sculptures by Andy Goldsworthy; I reflect both on their methodological role for describing phenomena associated with earth and on the status of Heidegger’s own examples. The chapter aims in particular to establish an explanatory priority of phenomene associated with earth over the lived body, showing that experiences featuring the phenomenal trat sof earth are irreducible to eminenty sensible experiences as experiences for my bodily being. The fourth chapter takes its departure from the German word Erklüftung that Heidegger mentions in Contributions of Philosophy. In discussing its particular position in Heidegger’s discourse on both projection (Entwurf) and ground (Grund) in Being and Time, Contributions to Philosophy, The Origin of the Work of Art and Art and Space, I show why Erklüftung, although it can be established as the description of a specific phenomenon by referring to other occurrences of the word (such as in Goethe’s writings on geology), I maintain that it is not apt for the purpose to which Heidegger submits the word. The failure of Erklüftung thus makes an important contributions to the understanding of Heidegger’s discourse on ground. The conclusion offers a reading of the second half of Heidegger’s last lecture course The Principle of Reason (Der Satz vom Grund) in order to situate the four studies vis-à-vis Heidegger’s late comprehensive treatment of ground. His attempt to determine the meaning of ground and its equivalents in Latin ratio and Greek λόγος is distinguished from the regress to the beginning of the history of Being that the lecture develops. In contrast to this ontological way to determine ground, I defend the view that the semantic explorations and descriptions Heidegger gives offer more adequate access to the phenomena of ground. x Overhang of grass and seedling birch On the quarry face.     IN SEARCH OF NON-IDENTITY: ADORNO’S CRITIQUE OF HEIDEGGER By Andrea Walsh A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Philosophy—Doctor of Philosophy 2018 ABSTRACT IN SEARCH OF NON-IDENTITY: ADORNO’S CRITIQUE OF HEIDEGGER By Andrea Walsh This dissertation explores Theodor Adorno’s career-long critique of Martin Heidegger’s Fundamental Ontology toward understanding how the latter may be inherently supportive of a negative dialectical approach to social critique and change. Adorno’s negative dialectics is motivated by the assumption that ethical rationality is primordially rooted in non-identity thinking, and it proposes that three basic conditions must be met for non-identity thinking to be truly engaged: the subject must acknowledge that the object takes socio-epistemic priority in constructions of meaning; she must attend to the object’s particular qualities that resist circumscription by the totalizing concepts of modern autonomous reason; and she must resolve to relate to the object through a “mimetic” form of rationality, which is passively attuned to the playful and unfinished elements of experience as much as it is inclined to critically interpret the particular socio-material conditions that shape consciousness and its environments. Without meeting these conditions, rationality tacitly sanctions subjects to reify experience as it takes an idealist form. While emphasizing that the problem of reification is endemic to public life at large, Adorno foregrounds its correlation with the persistence of philosophical idealism within the academy, leading him to target the phenomenological and existential traditions in general, and Heidegger’s Fundamental Ontology in particular, as inherently antagonistic to what he deems is philosophy’s central mission of normalizing non- identity thinking in both theory and praxis.

Thought and knowledge are essentially activities on the part of the subject understood anthropologically or transcendentally. 2. The history of knowledge exhibits teleological progress towards a better and more comprehensive account of its objects. In contrast to traditional epistemology, both Heidegger and Foucault show how thought and knowledge are not just acts, which can be attributed to the subject but also events which elude any such subjective characterization. They also show us how the history of knowledge exhibits ruptures when the very character of knowledge undergoes drastic transformation in the course of history. The dissertation concludes by hinting at how these new accounts of thought and knowledge have the potential to shake the very foundations of epistemology and lead us to a new framework for discussing the most basic questions of epistemology, towards an epistemology of ruptures.

Ocay he search for a historically conscious individual who is disposed to “radical action” is the main thrust of this paper. This is premised on T the following claims: first, that the modern society is a pathological society whose rules, most often but not necessarily, imply control and domination; thus a “refusal” to abide by these rules is the most appropriate alternative available; and, second, that there is still hope for the Enlightenment’s project of emancipation, that is, such “refusal,” which means a political fight for liberation, is still winnable no matter how formidable the forces of domination may be. But this paper can only do so much. I do not offer any universal and prefab solution to the pathological society. What I do instead is argue that the emergence of a historically conscious individual who is disposed to “radical action,” which eventually leads to a “collective radical action,” is still possible today. I also argue that “radical action” presupposes an awareness of the concrete socio-historical situations, thus the importance of “historicity.” This is done through a reconstructive reading of Marcuse’s Critical Theory. In fact, my argument is just an echo on what Marcuse did more than four decades ago. The paper starts with a brief discussion on “historicity” and the background of Marcuse’s conception of historicity as a requisite for a theory of liberation. The discussion on Marcuse’s engagement with Heidegger follows. This part is important in understanding Marcuse because, in my opinion, it was his reading of Being and Time that led Marcuse to believe that the fight for liberation must begin within the “individual” himself and not from the politically indoctrinated “proletariat” of Marx.

However, what many have missed in this work is the ethical potential it presents, particularly through his notion of Mitsein. This thesis will discuss how the history of philosophy has misunderstood the question of intersubjectivity. Throughout the history of philosophy, there has been a tendency to focus on detachment of the subject, rather than an engaged existence. Heidegger overcomes this by introducing the concept of Mitsein and allowing us to think of being-with one another as something which is integral to our very being, rather than something which comes to us through detached reflection. The consequences of this re-interpretation are significant for ethics because our starting point is always-already with others, rather than isolated and alone. In the early twentieth century, many philosophers began to reject Kantian and Hegelian approaches to the question of God and the philosophy of religion. The challenge was then to formulate a new way of talking about God within philosophy without necessarily having to revert to pre-modern accounts. These thinkers saw the importance of retaining the insights of modernity while also taking into account the Romantic and post-Romantic critiques of modernism as a one- sided or overly rationalistic enterprise. This dissertation seeks to provide a comprehensive picture of the approaches of Franz Rosenzweig and Martin Heidegger to rethinking the question of how philosophy is to proceed, especially in light of religious phenomena. Placing Rosenzweig and Heidegger in dialogue helps to further our understanding of both figures, particularly insofar as Rosenzweig’s thought might be used as a corrective to possible shortcomings in the later Heidegger. Many scholars have argued that there is something problematic about Heidegger’s religious thought, but Rosenzweig has been almost completely overlooked as an important corrective resource. Both Rosenzweig’s comprehensive account of the basic phenomena of human existence and his grammatical method for formulating this account share many of Heidegger’s insights, yet surpass them insofar as Rosenzweig is able to address the topic in a more philosophically cogent manner.
