Presently, it is utilized not only for the exterior appearance of its fruit but above all, for the nutritional and health characteristics of the various parts composing this last one (carpellary membranes, arils, seeds and bark). The fruit, the pomegranate, is rich in numerous chemical compounds (flavonoids, ellagitannins, proanthocyanidins, mineral salts, vitamins, lipids, organic acids) of high biological and nutraceutical value that make it the object of study for many research groups, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector. -

Indeed edible vegetables and fruits contain a wide variety of phytochemicals with proven antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, and chemopreventive activity; moreover, some of these phytochemicals also display direct antiproliferative activity towards tumor cells, with the additional advantage of high tolerability and low toxicity. The most important dietary phytochemicals are isothiocyanates, ellagitannins (ET), polyphenols, indoles, flavonoids, retinoids, tocopherols. Among this very wide panel of compounds, ET represent an important class of phytochemicals which are being increasingly investigated for their chemopreventive and anticancer activities. -

Punica granatum L. (pomegranate) has been used in traditional medicine for different kinds of pain. This review aims to explore the scientific evidence about the antinociceptive effect of pomegranate. A selection of original scientific articles that accomplished the inclusion criteria was carried out. It was found that different parts of pomegranate showed an antinociceptive effect; this effect can be due mainly by the presence of polyphenols, flavonoids, or fatty acids. -

Francis Ph.D. 1 Copyrighted by Matthew Daniel Teegarden 2018 2 Abstract Pre-clinical and clinical evidence suggest that dietary berries may help prevent against the development of some chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and oral cancer. Berries contain hundreds to thousands of phytochemicals that are thought to act synergistically to produce a wide range of biological effects. While most of the research with berries have been performed with fresh or minimally processed products, thermally processed and stored berry products also represent important dietary sources. The overall goal of this work is to build upon our understanding of the potential role of berry phytochemicals in the prevention of chronic diseases by investigating how they exist in foods and are metabolized by the body. We hypothesize that an untargeted metabolomics approach will provide novel insights to this end. The objective of these studies are to: profile the thermal processing-induced changes in the phytochemical profile of a black raspberry nectar beverage, investigate the impact of storage on the chemistry and bioactivity of this nectar against premalignant oral cancer cells, and profile the urinary metabolome of individuals consuming strawberry- based confections. -

Naturally-occurring agents from dietary fruits and vegetables have received considerable attention for the prevention and treatment of cancers. These natural agents are safe and cost efficient in contrast to expensive chemotherapeutic agents, which may induce significant side effects. The pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruit has been used for the prevention and treatment of a multitude of diseases and ailments for centuries in ancient cultures. Pomegranate exhibits strong antioxidant activity and is a rich source of anthocyanins, ellagitannins, and hydrolysable tannins. Studies have shown that the pomegranate fruit as well as its juice, extract, and oil exert anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, and anti-tumorigenic properties by modulating multiple signaling pathways, which suggest its use as a promising chemopreventive/chemotherapeutic agent. This review summarizes preclinical and clinical studies highlighting the role of pomegranate in prevention and treatment of skin, breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancers. -

Approximately, 2 million people die every year from HIV as reported by the World Health Organization. HIV/AIDS is difficult to treat as the virus continuously develops resistance to drugs being developed. Approach is now turning toward natural products for the development of anti-HIV drugs. Although HIV/AIDS is not a new disease, but research based on plant-derived products is still under clinical trials. Experimentally, it has been proven that plants have the potential for HIV treatment. The process involves identification of the active ingredients responsible for the reported anti-HIV activities, testing of the extract, and development of appropriate bioassays. Further development would require optimization of the formulation and manufacturing in compliance with preclinical safety and efficacy testing. The most challenging task for the natural product scientists is to separate these highly complex extracts containing several compounds into its individual components that are biologically active. Recently developed direct binding assay with mass spectrometry (MS) technology (viz., real-time time-of-flight-MS) is helpful in this respect but needs extensive optimization. -

Seeram). 1 Abstract Background: Ellagic acid (EA) and hydrolyzable ellagitannins (ETs) are dietary polyphenols found in fruits and nuts and implicated with potent antioxidant, anticancer and antiatherosclerotic biological properties. Unfortunately, there are no reports on bioavailability studies of EA or ETs in the human body. Therefore we conducted in vivo studies whereby a human subject consumed pomegranate juice (180 ml) containing EA (25 mg) and ETs (318 mg, as punicalagins, the major fruit ellagitan nin). Methods: A rapid plasma extraction procedure utilizing acidic precipitation of proteins, followed by HPLC -UV analyses was employed. Results : EA was detected in human plasma at a maximum concentration (31.9 ng/ml) after 1h post ingestion but was rap idly eliminated by 4h. The calibration curve for quantification of EA was linear (r 2 = 0.9975) over the concentration range from 1000 to 15.6 ng/ml.
