As I’ve said before, this evening is pretentiously called “An Evening with Chris Palmer.” The Festival asked me to do this event about 12 years ago, and I’ve been doing it annually ever since. Tonight I want to talk about the five best food films of all time. Now everyone please stand up, find someone you’ve never met before, and discuss for two minutes the best food films you’ve ever seen. Go! Ask audience members for their ideas! You may have noticed that I didn’t give you much structure for this question. Does food refer to nutrition, agriculture, factory farming, obesity, food waste, junk food, global food trade, or what? Also, by best food films, was I referring to impact? Did the film influence consumers’ purchasing decisions? Did policy makers take action to address, for example, the wretchedness of the standard American diet? Was there a lot of press coverage? Or by best food films, did I simply mean your favorite? As you can see, selecting the five best food films is complicated. Food is important to me for personal reasons. My father died of prostate cancer, and I have his genes. As I’ve researched and learned about cancer, I’ve become convinced that a plant-based diet is the best way to prevent prostate cancer. At the same time, a plant-based diet is one of the most powerful ways to fight climate change and to stop animal cruelty.

SPATIAL PRACTICES IN SUBURBIA Kenneth Jackson’s Crabgrass Frontiers, one of the key histories of American suburbia, marshals a fascinating array of evidence from sociology, geography, real estate literature, union membership profiles, the popular press and census information to represent the American suburbs in terms of population density, home-ownership, and residential status. But even as it notes that “nothing over the years has succeeded in gluing this automobile-oriented civilization into any kind of cohesion – save that of individual routine,” Jackson’s comprehensive history under-analyzes one of its four key suburban traits – the journey-to-work.1 It is difficult to account for the paucity of engagements with suburban transportation and everyday experiences like commuting, even in excellent histories like Jackson’s. In the first paper I situate Singer’s work within the larger historical context of moral concern for animals, looking at previous public consensus on the issue, its breakdown and its re-emergence with Singer in the 1970s. In the second paper, I take a closer look at Singer’s highly influential book, Animal Liberation (1975), and argue that as activist literature, his chapter on animal experimentation for example can be seen as morally persuasive in ways other than simply as an example of (the consequences) of speciesism. How I do this is to place Singer’s work side by side that of 19th century activist Francis Power Cobbe’s, in particular her pamphlet Light in Dark Places (1883), and examine their work against the criticisms from scientists defending the practice of animal experimentation.
