The posters reflect political solidarity among various countries. Posters were designed by various artists, including Cuban artists Gladys Acosta, Alberto Blanco, Rafael Enríquez, Andrés Hernández, Olivio Martínez, René Mederos, Rafael Morante, and Ernesto Padrón. Most of the posters are in color, produced by either a silkscreen or offset printing process. The poster captions and titles are multilingual. Language of Material: Spanish; Castilian . Historical Background The Organization in Solidarity with the People of Africa, Asia, and Latin America, or Organización de Solidaridad con los Pueblos de Asia, África y América Latina (OSPAAAL), is a non-governmental publisher of political literature and propaganda based in Havana, Cuba. OSPAAAL was founded in 1966 during a conference in Havana attended by delegations from 82 Asian, Latin American, and African countries. OSPAAAL advocates social justice and works toward solidarity with various countries, particularly third world countries. It strongly opposes capitalism, "neoliberal globalization," and "preventative war." OSPAAAL published its multilingual Tricontinental magazine from 1966 to 1990, which included color posters in most issues. Collection Scope and Content Summary This collection comprises over 100 posters published from the 1960s through the 1990s by OSPAAAL. The posters reflect political solidarity among various countries. The posters were designed by various artists, including Cuban artists Gladys Acosta, Alberto Blanco, Rafael Enríquez, Andrés Hernández, Olivio Martínez, René Mederos, Rafael Morante, and Ernesto Padrón. Most of the posters are in color, produced by either a silkscreen or offset printing process. Includes a poster in support of Angela Davis's release from prison while she was awaiting trial in California. The poster titles and captions are multilingual. Collection Arrangement This collection is arranged alphabetically by geographic region. The geographic designations were assigned by OSPAAAL to reflect the region for which a poster was produced. Within each geographic region, posters are arranged alphabetically by artists' names. Processing Note The poster titles and captions are multilingual. When present, the English title for multilingual posters is used in this guide. When conflicting dates of production appear in reference resources, both dates are provided. Durham: Duke University Press, 2008. Hiding in Plain Sight: The Case for Academic Study of Postage Stamps Lincoln Cushing Art Historian This book makes the case for the legitimate study of a medium that receives little academic attention—postage stamps. Child explores these precious objects on several levels. At the most abstract, he looks at these documents through the analytic tool of semiotics—the study of signs and the messages they contain. He then offers a broad philatelic and political history of Latin American stamps, and eventually narrows down to detailed Cushing 266 essays on the stamps from the Southern Cone, his region of expertise— Argentina, the Falklands/Malvinas, and territoriality on Antarctica. Child’s expertise in both philately and Latin American history make this book both informative and provocative. Given that stamps are high profile, internationally distributed official visual documents it is pretty obvious that they constitute a form of propaganda. This is a medium for countries to publish their story to the world, and in most cases the message—if there is one—is banal. However, often stamps charge into controversial topics, such as which country owns what piece of land, or whether the United States is an imperialistic presence in Viet Nam. These examples can take many visual forms, sometimes as subtle details such as choice of colors, typographic placement, or which clothing a head of state is shown wearing.

OSPAAAL's posters have become one of Cuba's most popular forms of mass culture, reaching production levels of five million by the 1970s. Shipped to progressive bookstores and households across Europe and North America, OSPAAAL's posters vied for the attention of youth audiences sympathetic to the burgeoning anti-capitalist movements emerging around the world. Following their first production in 1967, OSPAAAL's posters adopted a new hybridised form that combined the internationalism of Western aesthetics such as Pop Art, Op Art, and Psychedelic Art, with Afro-Cuban symbols, references to Cuba's historical past.

What initially disturbed me about the art of Shepard Fairey is that it displays none of the line, modeling and other idiosyncrasies that reveal an artist’s Stencil Pirates unique personal style.
