These policies were crucial to the legitimation of the Sandinista government, both domestically and abroad. In the existing literature on the Nicaraguan revolution, the issues of gender and legal reform as well as gender and revolutionary ideology have been dealt with at length. Molyneux’s (2001), Kampwirth’s (1998, 2006, 2013, 2015) and Montoya’s (2003) illuminating works on Sandinista law-making and gender ideology address how revolutionary ideology shapes legislation regarding women, LGBTQI individuals and the family. -

Scott, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2019 The term Latin jazz has often been employed by record labels, critics, and musicians alike to denote idioms ranging from Afro-Cuban music, to Brazilian samba and bossa nova, and more broadly to Latin American fusions with jazz. While many of these genres have coexisted under the Latin jazz heading in one manifestation or another, Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez uses the expression “Pan-American jazz” to account for both the Afro-Cuban jazz tradition and non-Cuban Latin American fusions with jazz. Throughout this dissertation, I unpack the notion of Pan-American jazz from a variety of theoretical perspectives including Latinx identity discourse, transcription and musical analysis, and hybridity theory. -

Adiós Utopia, Hello Texas The first major U.S. show since 1942 of Cuban art comes to Houston. Texans may be forgiven if many of us don’t know the first thing about art from Cuba. For most of the past 58 years, the socialist island nation has been cut off diplomatically and culturally from the United States. Almost all Texans, however, will recognize at least one important work from the island: “Guerrillero heroíco (Heroic Warrior),” the 1960 photograph of Ernesto “Che” Guevara taken by Alberto Korda. Perhaps you’ve seen it on a T- shirt once or twice. Guerrillero Heroico (“Heroic Guerrilla Fighter”) ALBERTO KORDA/WIKIMEDIA COMMONS “Guerrillero heroíco” is, by some estimates, the most reproduced and viewed photo in history. For more than half a century, it has conveniently stood as shorthand for both the island and the revolutionary project transpiring there — romantic, forward- looking and inspiring to some; shallow, dubious and menacing to others. The level of metonymy that Korda’s photo has achieved with his home country speaks to the power of art to reflect and translate the dreams and challenges of a people into a universal visual language. But as vital as “Guerrillero heroíco” remains, the photo is 57 years old. The thrilling hopes and predictable disappointments encoded in Korda’s image have long since been realized, chewed over and spit out by wave after wave of new Cuban artists, many of whom have been sentenced to invisibility in the United States because of embargo politics. ERNESTO CHE GUEVARA, COMANDANTE O POETA Luis Correa-Díaz University of Georgia La poesía es un arma cargada de futuro Gabriel Celaya a Darío, Sole y Romi El tema de este artículo podría resultar bastante sorprendente al lector desprevenido, al informarse aquí que el Che Guevara fue poeta y que hay entre sus escritos un puñado no desestimable de poemas. Espero, de todos modos, que la sorpresa no sea tanta como la mía al enterarme, leyendo el ensayo “Poet and Pedagogue” de A.J. Liebling en The Muhammad Ali Reader, editado por Gerald Early (New York: Rob Weisbach Books, 1999), que el boxeador más grande del mundo –y uno de mis héroes de niño- puede añadir con orgullo a su arte sobre el ring, y en relación a éste, unos cuantos versos épicos de su propia cosecha. Más tarde, al revisar el issue del 12 de octubre de 1998 de The New Yorker, que no había leído en su oportunidad, me encuentro con el artículo “American Hunger” de David Remnick -quizás de las mejores páginas que se han escrito en torno al “most original and magnetic athlete of the century”-, donde se comentan sus alardes poéticos dentro del marco de sus reconocidas dotes de performer, citándose incluso uno de sus poemas, “Song of Myself” (66), improvisado épica y proféticamente poco antes de su pelea con Sonny Liston en 1964. Que el Che escribió poesía, no lo han olvidado algunos apasionados suyos, a quienes se les agradecen sus noticias. Sin embargo y digno de mencionar es que este dato esté consignado, aunque brevemente, en una obra como Che for Beginners de Sergio Sinay (New York: Writers and Readers Publishing, Inc., 1997), cuya naturaleza de “ documentary comic book” y de texto divulgador haría esperar ésta u otras omisiones de importancia, las que felizmente para los principiantes de esta pasión R31 latinoamericana –según la expresión de Luis Vitale- no se le pueden imputar. -

Hiding in Plain Sight: The Case for Academic Study of Postage Stamps Lincoln Cushing Art Historian This book makes the case for the legitimate study of a medium that receives little academic attention—postage stamps. Child explores these precious objects on several levels. At the most abstract, he looks at these documents through the analytic tool of semiotics—the study of signs and the messages they contain. He then offers a broad philatelic and political history of Latin American stamps, and eventually narrows down to detailed Cushing 266 essays on the stamps from the Southern Cone, his region of expertise— Argentina, the Falklands/Malvinas, and territoriality on Antarctica. Child’s expertise in both philately and Latin American history make this book both informative and provocative. Given that stamps are high profile, internationally distributed official visual documents it is pretty obvious that they constitute a form of propaganda. This is a medium for countries to publish their story to the world, and in most cases the message—if there is one—is banal. However, often stamps charge into controversial topics, such as which country owns what piece of land, or whether the United States is an imperialistic presence in Viet Nam. These examples can take many visual forms, sometimes as subtle details such as choice of colors, typographic placement, or which clothing a head of state is shown wearing.
