Coast Guard Foundation Annual Report 2011 H Dedication H coast guard foundation annual report 2011 H dedication H ross e. roeder immediate past chairman of the board of trustees rom 2005 to 2011, Ross E. Roeder led the Coast Guard Foundation Board of Directors with a sure hand, helping expand the organi- Fzation’s support to men and women of the Coast Guard. Ross first became involved with the Coast Guard Foundation in 1989, when he regularly contributed to the Annual Fund. In 2002, Ross became a board member and served as chairman of the Pacific Area Awards Dinner in 2003. In 2005, Ross became Chairman of the Board of the Coast Guard Foun- dation. In this role, Ross oversaw and directed many new initiatives, and strengthened the Foundation’s partnerships and programs for the benefit of the men and women of the United States Coast Guard. In 2007, Ross and the Executive Committee began a process to re-align the board of trustees to be a more efficient, fundraising-focused group that also serves as goodwill ambassadors for the Coast Guard across the country. Ross also led the Foundation through highly technical compliance issues for board governance, and established best practices for overall operational and organizational structure. The Foundation strengthened its support for education under Ross’ tenure, as we expanded scholarships for children of enlisted members and spouses so that all members of Coast Guard families have access to support for education opportunities. The Evergreen Fund was rebranded to the Coast Guard Foundation Shipmate Fund, the method of allocation was revised and the Foundation established new efficiencies in the grants process. Support for the Coast Guard Academy resulted in a new, hi-tech computer lab, a new track and field complex and a partnership to build eight new state-of-the-art sailboats for the Coastal Sail Training Program. In times of great need, the Coast Guard Foundation is there for the Coast Guard — this concept grew in Ross’ time as chairman, through the establishment of three major giving programs: the Disaster Relief Fund; the Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund; and the Family Disaster Relief Fund. Throughout his tenure on the board and as board Chairman, Ross led by example. His personal generosity, through support of the annual fund, specific funds and projects, as well as events, improved the Foundation’s ability to provide for Coast Guard men and women. the coast guard foundation inspiring leadership, learning and a proud legacy of service to our nation by supporting the men and women of the united states coast guard and their families. he coast guard foundation supports many programs and projects through donations from individuals, corporations, grants and fundrais- Ting events. We provide college scholarships to dependents of enlisted per- sonnel on active duty, who are retired, or serving in the reserves. The Foundation funds recreation and family-oriented facilities, and supports education and morale programs at bases and on ships around the nation. In times of loss, we offer financial relief to Coast Guard families who lose their possessions in natural disasters. When Coast Guard families suffer the ultimate loss, losing a loved one in the line of duty, the Foundation provides scholarship and relief funds to support the families during their most trying times. The Foundation supports academic, athletic and leadership excellence for cadets at the United States Coast Guard Academy. The Foundation supports the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the volunteer arm of the service, providing units with critical funding for boating safety and mission critical support. coast guard foundation h 1 h 2011 annual report message from the Commandant admiral robert j. papp commandant, united states coast guard Dear Friends, On behalf of our Coast Guard women and men and their families, thank you once again for your generosity . Each year you tirelessly work to support our shipmates and their families by contributing to life-changing scholarship programs and life-saving disaster relief funds. From your humble beginnings in Stonington, Connecticut focused on supporting the Coast Guard Academy, your good works continue to expand and today reach every member of our Service. You have made so much possible for our Coast Guard family that we would otherwise not have. Your generosity is unending, inspiring and comforting. Right now Coast Guardsmen are standing the watch around the U.S. and throughout the world as they perform our challenging maritime missions. Th ey draw strength from knowing that there are people like you, whose passion for our Service always improves our lives, and in diffi cult times becomes our lifeline. With Gratitude, R.J. Papp, Jr. Admiral, U.S. Coast Guard coast guard foundation h 2 h 2011 annual report message from foundation leadership anne brengle and robert j. flynn coast guard foundation president and board chairman roviding education, support and relief to those who wear the Coast Guard uniform is the Coast Guard Foundation’s central mission. To do this effectively, we partner with you, our Pgenerous donors, to raise the funds needed to provide these programs and services. In 2011, we strengthened our core support across the board, funding scholarship and grant programs, Shipmate Fund requests, academic and athletic programs at the Coast Guard Academy and emergency relief to those in need. We also expanded our area of support for the first time ever, offering education grants for the spouses of enlisted personnel, as well as a regional endowment fund in honor of our outgoing Chairman, Ross E. Roeder. Both of these efforts built on existing pillars of support that aim to further our reach in the Coast Guard Community. In its first year, the Spouse Education Grant program was exceedingly popular. The Coast Guard Foun- dation awarded more than $17,000 to 77 spouses across 22 states. Some are taking long distance courses through certified universities online, others are attending colleges or technical schools and they range in age from 20 to 53 years old. A common thread in their life is the love and support of their spouses and the United States Coast Guard, and the desire to better themselves through education. What could be a bet- ter program to support than this? When you support the family, you support the Coast Guard member. To thank our outgoing Board Chairman, Ross E. Roeder, for his many years of service to the Foundation, we established the first- ever named morale fund for enlisted Coast Guard members — the Ross E. Roeder Shipmate Endowment Fund. The fund will benefit morale and welfare projects for Coast Guard bases and units in Northern Michigan, a place near and dear to Ross’ heart. The long-standing partnership with the Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association, Coast Guard Academy Parents Association and the Coast Guard Academy was realized when the first two Leadership 44 sail training vessels were delivered and christened. We are proud of this collaborative effort that will bring a full fleet of state-of-the-art sailing vessels to the future officer corps. In order to raise our profile higher, we relaunched our website—coastguardfoundation.org, with a greater focus on the people we serve, and a brighter light on our donors who so generously support us. This annual report also reflects that theme of people, and tells better stories about their involvement with the Foundation, and their motivation to support the Coast Guard. In 2011, we established a new partnership with The Weather Channel, through a social media campaign to get fans on Facebook for its docu-series Coast Guard Alaska, a television show that covers the arduous deployment of Coast Guard personnel in Alaska. Together, The Weather Channel and the Coast Guard Foundation successfully accomplished getting 5,000 thumbs-up for the show, raising awareness of the challenges and dangers Coast Guard men and women face on a regular basis, and raised $5,000 for morale support in Alaska. The simple fact is: our success would not be possible without you. Thank you for supporting our efforts in 2011, and thank you to those who continue to do so. coast guard foundation h 3 h 2011 annual report education support for coast guard families One of the most challenging aspects of life in the Coast Guard is balancing responsibilities of family and duty. Because of these challenges, the Coast Guard Foundation supports families in various ways, including college scholarships for children of enlisted personnel and education grants for enlisted members and their spouses. In 2011, the Foundation provided more than 780 enlisted men and women and their spouses with grants worth $220,000, helping them attain the dream of a college education. Last year alone, children of enlisted personnel were awarded 79 scholarships; representing a $200,000 investment in the future of Coast Guard children’s lives. The scholarship program is made possible by generous contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations around the country who believe in the importance of higher education. The Foundation maintains several named scholarships, including theSobel Scholarship Program, named for the Foundation’s first higher education champion, Coast Guard Reserve Rear Admiral Arnold I. Sobel, a founding officer of the Foundation who wanted to find a way to support the children of enlisted men and women serving in the Coast Guard. Coast Guard Aviation Association The Ancient Order of the Pterodactyl Celebrating An Era of Achievement Ancient Pterodactyls plucked creatures from the sea. So have we and do we still. See “Who, What, and Why We Are” on Page 15 A wise man once stated, "Don't tell me how hard you have worked -..tell me what you have achieved." Here is but a small example of what the over 2,000 members of CGAA/AOP have achieved as the result of a large investment of member "sweat equity'' and financial commitment from ourselves and our sponsors in this century. Together we will far surpass even this modest level of support of Coast Guard Aviation and the preservation and display of Coast Guard aviation history. From its founding in 1977 through 2000, the association grew steadily in membership, accomplished much, and set an ambitious course for the future. A very brief summary of early years includes: Supporting expansion of the Coast Guard Exhibit at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola Publishing a Coast Guard Aviation history book Encouraging and assisting several authors of books in describing various aspects of CG Aviation history Expanding the CG Aviation Hall of Honor (formerly Hall of Fame) at Aviation Training Center, Mobile, AL Opening membership to all Coast Guard pilots, aircrew, flight surgeons, and supporters of Coast Guard Aviation Enhancing recognition of exemplary performance and professionalism at annual gatherings ("Roosts") Publishing the association journal "PTEROGRAM" three times per year (now in digital format) Granting funds and professional support to the Coast Guard Academy Cadet Aviation Club Creating and funding the annual presentation of the Captain Marion "Gus" Shrode Flight Safety Award 1 HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING THIS CENTURY 2000 The association assisted in the fund raising and historical research efforts to erect an Aviation Memorial at Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City, NC honoring all those who have perished while flying missions in Coast Guard Aircraft.
