When Coast Guard members are supported with quality programs that enhance their service to our Nation, we know we are fulfilling our mission. We keep a watchful eye on our programs and make sure they align with the current and emerging needs of the service, both so we can be relevant to the Coast Guard, and so we can be the best stewards of our donors’ investments in our organization. z morale, wellness and community projects In 2018, we supplied more than $622,000 in morale, wellness, and recreation initiatives to Coast Guard members stationed around the country. This year, 160 projects were completed, including major installations such as a gym enhancement project at Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; outdoor recreation equipment for a remote station in Ketchikan, Alaska, so families sta- tioned there can enjoy the natural beauty of the state and stay active during the bright summer days, and darker winter months; and, provided 28 cutters across the service’s fleet with a variety of projects to benefit members on longer deployments, maximiz- ing their opportunity for training and staying in top shape, both mentally and physically. We supported the future officer corps at the United States Coast Guard Academy with close to $500,000 in support for academic, enrichment, athletics, cadet activities and sailing/waterfront activities. The 2018 Coast Guard Foundation Hedrick Fellow program featured Ambassador John Negroponte, who participated in classroom discussions prior to delivering a corps-wide address. Support to the Coast Guard Auxiliary Association was in the form of outreach programs that include member training and important leadership initiatives of the organization. z workforce development We launched our Workforce Development Program in 2018 to provide certification and training so Coast Guard members can better serve their communities while enlisted in the Coast Guard and after their service ends. The certification coursework strengthens a member’s knowledge and skills needed to remain semper paratus in service to our country. A Captain’s License course was the most popular offering this year, while some participants earned specialty certifica- tions in Mercury Verado engine service and an aviation mechanic program. In its inaugural year, more than 240 Coast Guard members earned their professional licenses through this initiative. After 20 Coast Guard members earned their Captains’ Licenses through a course held in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, its Education Services Officer wrote a letter expressing appreciation. “As we continue working with our local resources to deliver professional develop sea-service accredited offerings, the support of the Coast Guard Foundation to our members cannot be overstated. The attending students asked me to forward a “thank you” and expressed their appreciation for the Coast Guard Foundation support in making this professional training opportunity a reality.” z disaster relief and response After a devastating hurricane season in 2017, additional resources were needed to re-establish some infrastructure that primar- ily served Coast Guard members’ fitness and recreation needs, and family and community spaces.
