We were honored to have CGC Mohawk (WMEC 913), CO CDR Bob Hendrickson and crew, with a HITRON MH-65C aboard, as the centerpiece of our gathering. There were many highlights: attendance by CG Chief of Staff, Ptero VADM John Currier, aviator 1877, Ptero Frank Manson, aviator 396, Honorary Ptero Sergei Sikorsky, and current Ancient Al’s Ptero RADM Gary Blore, aviator 1850, and Peter MacDougall, P-2900. There was also an excursion to the St. Augustine historical sites and professional discourse briefings on the History of HITRON and the CG Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Sincere thanks to HITRON CO (Ptero CAPT Joe Baker, aviator 2511) and his crew for their participation and hospitality as their duties permitted!     Coast Guard Aviation Association The Ancient Order of the Pterodactyl Celebrating An Era of Achievement Ancient Pterodactyls plucked creatures from the sea. So have we and do we still. See “Who, What, and Why We Are” on Page 15 A wise man once stated, "Don't tell me how hard you have worked -..tell me what you have achieved." Here is but a small example of what the over 2,000 members of CGAA/AOP have achieved as the result of a large investment of member "sweat equity'' and financial commitment from ourselves and our sponsors in this century. Together we will far surpass even this modest level of support of Coast Guard Aviation and the preservation and display of Coast Guard aviation history. From its founding in 1977 through 2000, the association grew steadily in membership, accomplished much, and set an ambitious course for the future. A very brief summary of early years includes: Supporting expansion of the Coast Guard Exhibit at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola Publishing a Coast Guard Aviation history book Encouraging and assisting several authors of books in describing various aspects of CG Aviation history Expanding the CG Aviation Hall of Honor (formerly Hall of Fame) at Aviation Training Center, Mobile, AL Opening membership to all Coast Guard pilots, aircrew, flight surgeons, and supporters of Coast Guard Aviation Enhancing recognition of exemplary performance and professionalism at annual gatherings ("Roosts") Publishing the association journal "PTEROGRAM" three times per year (now in digital format) Granting funds and professional support to the Coast Guard Academy Cadet Aviation Club Creating and funding the annual presentation of the Captain Marion "Gus" Shrode Flight Safety Award 1 HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING THIS CENTURY 2000 The association assisted in the fund raising and historical research efforts to erect an Aviation Memorial at Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City, NC honoring all those who have perished while flying missions in Coast Guard Aircraft.

Roeder led the Coast Guard Foundation Board of Directors with a sure hand, helping expand the organi- Fzation’s support to men and women of the Coast Guard. Ross first became involved with the Coast Guard Foundation in 1989, when he regularly contributed to the Annual Fund. In 2002, Ross became a board member and served as chairman of the Pacific Area Awards Dinner in 2003. In 2005, Ross became Chairman of the Board of the Coast Guard Foun- dation. In this role, Ross oversaw and directed many new initiatives, and strengthened the Foundation’s partnerships and programs for the benefit of the men and women of the United States Coast Guard. In 2007, Ross and the Executive Committee began a process to re-align the board of trustees to be a more efficient, fundraising-focused group that also serves as goodwill ambassadors for the Coast Guard across the country. Ross also led the Foundation through highly technical compliance issues for board governance, and established best practices for overall operational and organizational structure. The Foundation strengthened its support for education under Ross’ tenure, as we expanded scholarships for children of enlisted members and spouses so that all members of Coast Guard families have access to support for education opportunities. The Evergreen Fund was rebranded to the Coast Guard Foundation Shipmate Fund, the method of allocation was revised and the Foundation established new efficiencies in the grants process.

It was initially created to provide funds for academic, athletic, and morale needs of the Coast Guard Academy and its cadets which were not Tcovered by federal operational funding. In 1986, the Foundation expanded its charter to support projects that enhance the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families. The Foundation is governed by a Board of 100 Trustees from all parts of the country. The Trustees elect from their members a 30 person Board of Directors to oversee the management of the Foundation. Located in Stonington, Connecticut, the Foundation employs a staff of twelve civilians responsible for meeting the Foundation’s objectives and working closely with the Coast Guard to ensure its forces are semper paratus, always ready. The Coast Guard Foundation helps Coast Guard men and women strengthen their service to our nation by encouraging them to excel, on duty and off. The Foundation supports numerous programs and projects through donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and fundraising events. The Foundation supports academic, athletic, and leadership excellence for cadets at the Academy; provides financial support to Coast Guard families who lose a loved one in the line of duty; offers financial relief to Coast Guard families who lose their possessions in natural disasters; provides college scholarships to dependents of enlisted personnel; funds recreation and family-oriented facilities; and supports education and morale programs at bases and on cutters around the nation; as well as hundreds of smaller projects.
