Lidé, kteří přijali etiku straight edge, neužívají drogy, nekouří, nepijí alkohol, a snaží se žít aktivním životem v rámci hardcorové komunity i mimo ni. Druhá část práce přináší vhled do životních způsobů vybraných členů straight edge. Předkládá sdělená hodnotová a žitá pravidla jimiž se dotazovaní řídí. • The Music Cultures of Radical Environmental and Animal-Rights Activism (REARA)
ISSN: 2196-8136 Special Issue: Music and Radicalism Ausgabe: 3/2014 The Music Cultures of Radical Environmental and Animal-Rights Activism (REARA) Jonathan Pieslak 1 Summary While most recent research on radicalism prioritizes focus on religious and right wing- oriented radicalism, radicalism and violence are, of course, not the sole domain of far-right political, religious, or racial ideology. 1 This article addresses the most active and musical element emerging from the radical left today within the United States, Radical Environmental and Animal-Rights Activism—a movement for which I have crafted the acronym, REARA. The first section of this study introduces the movement and addresses the problematic issue of the “terrorism” label when referencing REARA direct action, a label increasingly applied to the movement’s criminality by governmental agencies. Among the many challenges involved in studying the radical left is the fact that groups, eco-animal rights ones included, are often comprised of individuals maintaining vastly divergent and sometimes contradictory ideological commitments. Research suggests that within REARA, the uniformity of ideological motivation comes second to direct action, which defines ideology insofar as ideological inconsistencies among members appear mitigated by a deeper commitment to simply act. The second section outlines the historical and ideological backgrounds that now root eco- animal rights militancy; it also tackles the use of playful terminology, like “monkeywrenching,” within movement rhetoric and

Yet, even as the majority of punk's 1970's pioneers and the counterculturalists of the 1960's have long left community and defining elements of style behind, we still only know little about how individuals' adult lives might nonetheless be informed by involvements such as these. My dissertation draws upon 44 face-to-face in-depth interviews with individuals who transitioned out of straightedge—a clean-living youth scene that has been associated with punk and hardcore music since the early 1980's based upon a lifetime pledge to abstain from intoxication. Interview data show former straightedge adherents believe their time as straightedge, an affiliation they have all categorically relinquished, has nonetheless

Underpinning this will be an ethnographicexamination of how the ethics of punk informs their views of remaining authentic and what they consider to be a sell out and betrayal of these values. I illustrate how such ethics have evolved and how they inform the daily practice of two chosen DiY punk communities in Leeds and Bradford. I show how thesecommunities reciprocally relate to each other. I ask such questionsas what do the participantsget out of what is often experiencedas hard work and toil, particularly it where is fraught with a seriesof dilemmas bound up in politics, ethics, identity and integrity. I offer a grounded theory of how and what ways those involved in DiY punk authenticatethemselves in their actions. This will demonstratehow and, more importantly, why DiY punks distinguish their ethical version of punk over and above what are taken as less favourable forms of punk.
