Baltimore Pride 2019 is only 45 days away! Each year the Pride Parade Committee se- lects an individual from the community to an- nounce the parade floats and organizations as they travel the parade route up Charles Street. This year’s Pride Parade Emcee is treasure of the sexual and gender minority and faith-based communities—Monty How- ard. Monty was born in to a military family, so he spent most of his childhood re- locating to various states—a total of 29 times to be exact. He identifies as a gay Episcopa- lian, a graphic designer, and community ac- tivist. Monty arrived in Baltimore in 1998 and has been with his partner, Steve Howard for 16 years. In addition to the longevity of his partnership, Monty has also worked in the architectural graphic design business for 37 years and has served as a Big Brother to two siblings for 10 years. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Graphic Design from the School of Design in 1981, and has lived and worked in Virginia, Minnesota, , and Delaware before coming to Balti- more and feeling ‘right at home’ from the start. Since arriving to Charm City, Monty has been an active member of several faith-based and other community organizations. He is a veteran Emcee, having previously served in the role for the Festival in Bolton Hill from 2004-2012 and Quiz Nite on Bolton Hill from 2009-2014. His connections with many of Bal- timore’s groups and institutions will ensure that Baltimore Pride 2019 will be diverse and engaging for all that participate. We hope to see you there! To Our Readers and Advertisers With this issue, we begin our 17th year publishing Baltimore OUTloud. Although last year was a bit of a struggle financially, we hope that those problems are behind us as we enter the 2019 Pride season and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion. Our progress on some fronts during the past half-century has exceeded our wildest dreams. But in other areas, we have actually experienced some regression as acceptance by the mainstream has dampened our radical spirit. None the less, we are happy to still be here and thank our advertisers and loyal readers for their com- mitment to the newspaper. We consider it an honor to provide a voice for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities of Baltimore, Maryland and parts of the Mid-Atlantic. We look forward to another year of activist journalism as we continue the struggle for our liberation. Thanks again for your support!
