Generations of heroes The Argonautica of Apollonius Rhodius brings emphatically to the attention of its readers the distinction between the generation of the Argonauts and the heroes of the Trojan War in the next genera- tion. Apollonius initially highlights this emphasis in the episode of the Argonauts’ departure, when the baby Achilles is watching them, at AR 1.557-5581 σὺν καί οἱ (sc. Chiron) παράκοιτις ἐπωλένιον φορέουσα | Πηλείδην Ἀχιλῆα, φίλωι δειδίσκετο πατρί (“and with him his wife, hold- ing Peleus’ son Achilles in her arms, showed him to his dear father”)2; he does so again in 4.866-879, which describes Thetis and Achilles as a baby. Knox "IN HUMAN LIFE," says the Nurse in Euripides' Hippolytus (435-6), "second thoughts are somehow wiser." Like many another character in Euripidean tragedy, she has just changed her mind, and, in true Euripidean style, she justifies her action with a generaliza tion. It is not a generalization which would have recommended itself to Aeschylus and Sophocles; before Euripides, change of mind is a rare phenomenon on the tragic stage.! Aeschylus, as Bruno Snell has demonstrated, broke new ground in Greek poetry with his explicit presentation of a conscious human choice between alternatives, a free human decision which commits its taker to a tragic course.2 The responsibility the hero thus assumes, and the complex relation of his choice to the will of the gods and his own heredity, allow little scope for a change of mind. Aeschylean drama is linear; its principal figures, their decision once made, pursue their chosen course to the bitter end.3 In the Persians, which is the tragedy of a whole people rather than an individual, and which furthermore works through retrospect and prophecy rather than through present action, a change of mind is excluded by the nature of the dramatic organization. In the Seven against Thebes, Eteocles, at the end of a slow, almost static, preparation, makes his swift decision to fight against his brother; it is a decision, but not a change of mind-he had already decided to fight in person at one of the gates (282) and the gate where Polynices awaits him is the last remaining assignment. -

While still young he composed his extant epic poem of four books on the story of the Argonauts. When this work failed to win acceptance he went to Rhodes where he not only did well as a rhetorician but also made a success of his epic in a revised form, for which the Rhodians gave him the 'freedom' of their city; hence his surname. On returning to Alexandria he recited his poem again, with applause. In 196 Ptolemy Epiphanes made him the librarian of the Museum (the University) at Alexandria. His Argonautica is one oi the better minor epics, remarkable for originality, powers of observation, sincere feeling, and de- piction of romantic love. His Jason and Medea are natural and interesting, and did much to inspire Virgil (in a very different setting) in the fourth book of the Aeneid. The paper that follows began as a lecture, in which 1 attempted to set out for a group of college teachers what was specifie to Greek mythology, as opposed to the mythologies of other peoples1. Of course, there is no single trait that is unique to Greek myths. But there are several characteristics of Greek mythology that are, despite the intense attention it has received for decades and even centuries, still not commonly noticed in the scholarly literature, and which, taken together, contribute to its particular nature. By the device of contrasting with Greek myths a single narrative from a very different society, 1 thought that 1 might set in relief certain features that have by and large been overlooked, in part precisely because they are so familiar as to seem perfectly natural. My survey of the characteristics of Greek mythology, needless to say, makes no pretense to being exhaustive. -
