Some are national parent clubs, others local specialty clubs, and still others are devoted to a broad variety of events from agility to obedience and tracking, from field trials to lure coursing and herding tests and trials. Many clubs meet monthly, others bi-monthly, and yet others more infrequently. All were formed by a diverse group of dog lovers who share the common interest of raising, training, breeding and competing with purebred dogs. These clubs not only further the sport of purebred dogs, but also many strive to promote and protect dogs in their communities, share in educational programs, sponsor training classes and health clinics, and operate a rescue network, as well as responsible breeder locator service. • Brain Boosting Activities for Dogs Use It Or Lose It
Brain boosting activities for dogs Use it or lose it Just like us, our dogs need to exercise their brain as well as their body. Not using the brain enough can affect our dogs' cognitive functions and problem-solving skills. This is why physical exercise on its own is not enough. You, as a responsible dog owner, also need to provide mental stimulation for your dog. Most physical exercise also includes mental stimulation in the form of new smells and sights. However, additional mental stimulation is recommended to boost your dog's cognitive function and slow down the neurological (brain) signs of aging. Playing, learning new tricks, socializing, solving puzzles, exploring new territories are all excellent ways to boost your dog’s brain activities. It is important to start early on. Puppies are like babies. Their brain develops very fast during their first few months of life. The more mental stimulation they get, during those first crucial months, the better. Research has shown that using mentally stimulating toys for puppies reduces their risk of developing Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) later in life. 2 | P a g e It is however never too late to start exercising your dog’s brain. You can indeed 'teach an old dog new tricks'. It just takes longer. But it can still be as fun and rewarding for you and your dog. Even dogs suffering from CDS can benefit from learning new tasks (has been shown to improve their learning ability and memory). The five recommended brain boosting activities include physical exercise, physical training, mental training, playing games and using mentally stimulating toys.

INDY DOG & DISC CLUB NEWSLETTER “Where Having Fun Is More Important Than Winning” March, 2008 Volume 1 Board of Directors: IDDC DEMO TEAM ROCK AND ROLLS President Chip Hershey IN CHICAGO Vice President How does one grab the attention of 2,000 dog handlers and a portion of 100,000 Mark Gose spectators at a major dog show? They hire Indy Dog and Disc Club’s Demo Team. The 2008 International Kennel Club Cluster of Dog Shows, at McCormick Place in Chicago, Past President February 22-24, 2008 was the scene of rockin’ mania in the disc dog arena. IDDC’s Ron King weekend program consisted of 11 rocking, popping, star studded, energy infused Treasurer performances. Three days of oohs and aahs smothered the atmosphere in our corner of Don Lang the convention center. IDDC’s canine show squad consisted of Tony Hoard, Chip Hershey, Christina Curtis, Rick Kimball, Carol Herbertz, Mary Jo Corso, Matt Maynard, Secretary/Membership and Don Lang. Their team mates were Rory Dean, Zaniee “J”, Q, Electra Blue, Lexi, Director Captain Jack, Nitro, Dugan, Iggy Pop, Daisy, Rudy, Anabelle, and Lily. Their Sharon Galema performances left little doubt of what top notch freestylers can do to impress a crowd. Rory Dean is a 7 year old Champion Aussie who is still every bit on top of his game. His Newsletter Editor star shined bright in the arena and lit the way for his fellow canine champs. The dogs Patricia Daugherty gave an awesome effort to the weekend’s success. On Friday, our first day, there was a respectable amount of spectators.

Jeanne Esmond, Sandi and Katie Deb Carroll and Yogi The February 13th Grooming session was well attended. Nancy Flowers and Corally Burmaster gave hand stripping and clipping advice and demonstrated both. We had two puppies, Dixie Darlin’ with Owners Mal and Joyce Graham and Yogi owned by Debra and Patrick Carroll; just seeing those cuties was worth the trip to Maryland! Ann Riley was there with Digby for a touch up. Pam McKusick brought rescue Charlie and learned, with Nancy’s help, to strip his coat. Jeanne Esmond brought two wooly sheep to the session. After much clipping and combing, two Airedales immerged! We also had several guests looking to purchase puppies and one family looking for an older Airedale, possibly a rescue.
