Volume 13 / Issue 1 / February 2020 BELCONNEN DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB / 8 2019 DOTY WINNERS

Each of our sports selects one team each year to receive the Dog of the Year (DOTY) award for that sport. This is the highest accolade that can be awarded at BDOC, and recognises outstanding and consistent performance in competition throughout the award period alongside the handler’s contribution to the running of the club. Congratulations to our DOTY award winners for 2019!

RALLY OBEDIENCE ANNE LEWIS AND DELILAH Neut Ch LANDMARK WHY WHY WHY DELILAH RAE ADX ADO JDX JDO SPD GDX SDX TK.S has been a member of our family since she was 6 months old. Delilah is a 6-year-old American Cocker Spaniel. As can be seen by her titles she is very versatile and has competed successfully in a number of sports as well as having earned her Confirmation Title.

I have had so much fun competing with her in Rally Obedience as well as Agility and and more recently in the new sport of Trick Dog. Delilah is the second small dog I have trained. I have owned and trained a number of much taller dogs (Irish and English Setters). I have found it interesting and challenging to train a smaller dog in that the physical demands on the handler can be much more pronounced. For example, in order to give correct placement of rewards being able to bend and deliver the reward in the position or action you are rewarding.

I hope to continue to compete in Rally for the next few years as well as attempting to continue with Delilah’s tracking (the sport she loves the best) as well as progressing in our new sport of Tricks. Whatever happens next will be guaranteed to be fun!

FLYBALL SALLY PROVINS AND BAILEY Bailey is a 8 year old cavoodle. She has a 7 year old cavoolde sister called Cleo and 2 small humans at home who might possibly (although highly unlikely) drop food for her.

Bailey first started in flyball when we made it to Gold level in canine companion back in 2012, a dog sport we never knew existed. We spent her first year training and she made her debut at the Canberra Million Paws Walk in May 2013, where she also received her first Yellow card as she couldn’t help but follow her nose and crossed the lanes for the smell of a sausage.

Bailey now holds her Flyball Master Champion – Onyx title with 1,845 points, and has competed in over 80 race meets across 6 years of racing and has averaged 22 points per race meet. Bailey was nominated for flyball dog of the year for her ability to run in any position, her consistency and reliability and an overall asset to any team.

Volume 13 / Issue 1 / February 2020 BELCONNEN DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB / 9 DISC DOGS DANA ROBERTSON AND WATSON Watson has been competing at disc for just over a year. We were warmly welcomed into the dog disc community just after moving to Canberra. Watson has always loved chasing toys however since introducing him to a disc at about a year old it has been his choice of chasing toy. Watson doesn’t care who throws the disc for him and will constantly be making new friend trying to entice them to throw for him.

Watson loves the games with a long run and space to catch the disc with a spectacular jump into the air. He is always so proud of himself every time he catches the disc and trots back with his head held high and tail wagging.

Christine, Catherine and all the disc members create such supportive and inclusive environment on the field weather its training or a competition you know we are all there to have fun, support each other and have a good time with our dogs. We are so thankful to both Catherine and Christine for all the behind the scene work they put in giving us the chance to train and compete with other around Australia and the world.

AGILITY JANET SPEED AND TY Ty came into our rescue group CPR as puppy after being abandoned with his siblings. He was adopted out twice and was returned due to his energy levels. Hence joined my special blend reject pack. We did all the classes up to Gold. I was looking for something that would kept him thinking and moving. That’s when we discovered Agility as well as Fly- ball, Nose-works, Rally-O and Tracking. But Agility is Ty’s real love. He will start jumping around and whining once we get close to the grounds.

It is so much fun, the challenge, to learn and to do things together as a team. It’s a real buzz, when you look at your dog at full speed heading towards the jumps and the connect you have is amazing. But there of course moments when your plan of running 22 fences in a time goes astray. You leave your dog at the start line, you have walked the course and you have a plan to tackle the course. Your heart is pumping, you mind is racing, your dog is eyeballing you then you acknowledge the judge. Signal for him to go and he stays there, or you turn and he is off, with your best plans with him. You scramble into position before he comes out of the tunnel, in your mind you are saying to yourself do I do a front cross, blind cross, rear cross or a backside send. OMG he is here!

Ty has managed to us on a journey and has taught me a lot. He has gained his titles and acknowledge by the club with DOTY Agility award. Thanks to all the instructors and people that have helped us along in our journey in Agility.

Volume 13 / Issue 1 / February 2020 BELCONNEN DOG OBEDIENCE CLUB / 10 TRIALLING OBEDIENCE KAREN HOBSON AND JEM Jem – or Jem Jem as she is affectionately known – has stolen my heart and my socks from the day she entered my life. Our first year was tumultuous, but she emerged from 2 major surgeries with her zest for life untarnished. Her resilience and resolve to enjoy every day to the fullest is unmatched.

Jem competes in obedience, agility (with her amazing handler Lara), and this year is venturing into retrieving trials. Her great loves are agility and retrieving, and when I asked her to turn her attention to obedience, I’m sure she thought I was kidding. At times, I think I am.

Our obedience journey has been quite the trek— rewarding, frustrating, and a steep learning curve for me as a handler. Jem has tested everything I thought I knew, taught me a lot that I didn’t, and pushed me to find ways to get the best out of both of us. I often joke that when I see things as black and white, she sees them as chocolate.

Jem is now training for UD—I never thought we would get here, but I knew that if we did she would love the utility class. She has never enjoyed obedience so much, but in true Jem Jem style, what happens from here is anyone’s guess.
