Todos los trabajos han sido revisados por los profesores del Comité Científico del Congreso y esperamos que las correcciones hayan sido de utilidad a los autores. Ya sólo queda “la puesta en escena” con la exposición y los nervios de hablar en público. Se dice que “no hay temas aburridos, sino oradores poco entusiastas”. Sabemos que nuestros estudiantes, si se han lanzado a presentar su trabajo en este Congreso, es porque entusiasmo no les falta, y los organizadores del Congreso vamos a hacer todo lo posible para que no decaiga. No obstante, como en cualquier otro evento de este tipo, tenemos un tiempo limitado y esperamos que los ponentes controlen su entusiasmo y sepan respetarlo. -
Biological Surveys at Hunsbury Hill Country Park 2018
FRIENDS OF WEST HUNSBURY PARKS BIOLOGICAL SURVEYS AT HUNSBURY HILL COUNTRY PARK 2018 Ryan Clark Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre April 2019 Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre Introduction Biological records tell us which species are present on sites and are essential in informing the conservation and management of wildlife. In 2018, the Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre ran a number of events to encourage biological recording at Hunsbury Hill Fort as part of the Friends of West Hunsbury Park’s project, which is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Hunsbury Hill Country Park is designated as a Local Wildlife Site (LWS). There are approximately 700 Local Wildlife Sites in Northamptonshire. Local Wildlife Sites create a network of areas, which are important as refuges for wildlife or wildlife corridors. Hunsbury Hill Country Park was designated as a LWS in 1992 for its woodland flora and the variety of habitats that the site possesses. The site also has a Local Geological Site (LGS) which highlights the importance of this site for its geology as well as biodiversity. This will be surveyed by the local geological group in due course. Hunsbury Hill Country Park Local Wildlife Site Boundary 1 Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre (NBRC) supports the recording, curation and sharing of quality verified environmental information for sound decision-making. We hold nearly a million biological records covering a variety of different species groups. Before the start of this project, we looked to see which species had been recorded at the site. We were surprised to find that the only records we have for the site have come from Local Wildlife Site Surveys, which assess the quality of the site and focus on vascular plants, with some casual observations of other species noted too. -

Bioassays were carried out to examine differences in the feeding of a folivorous weevil, Stereonychus fraxini De Geer, on leaves from ash saplings with undamaged roots, and those with damaged roots. Beetles ate significantly more of the leaves of root-damaged saplings in a choice experiment. 2. A separate study of the effect of root damage on leaf toughness was carried out on a second group of ash saplings. Saplings with damaged roots had less tough leaves than control saplings. Decreased leaf toughness in hypothesized as a mechanism to explain the preference of weevils for leaves from damaged trees. 3. Both chemical and physical changes may occur in the tissues of ash trees in response to environmental stress such as drought and root damage. 4. Root damage caused by agricultural disturbance is hypothesized as a mechanism making mature ash trees in hedgerow ecosystems more susceptible to insect herbivores. Key words. Photo Pest List – 2010-2016 credit: Andrin Gross. Background An extensive dieback of ash (Fig. 1) was observed from 1996 to 2006 in Lithuania and Poland. Trees were dying in all age classes, irrespective of site conditions and regeneration conditions. A fungus, described as a new species Chalara fraxinea, was isolated from shoots and some roots (Kowalski, 2006). The fungal pathogen varied from other species of Chalara by its small, short cylindrical conidia extruded in chains or in slimy droplets, morphological features of the phialophores, and by colony characteristics. Initial taxonomic studies concerning Chalara fraxinea established that its perfect state was the ascomycete Hymenoscyphus albidus (Gillet) W. Phillips, a fungus that has been known from Europe since 1851. Kowalski and Holdenrieder (2009b) provide a description and photographs of the teleomorphic state, Hymenoscyphus albidus. A molecular taxonomic study of Hymenoscyphus albidus indicated that there was significant evidence for the existence of two morphologically very similar taxa, H. albidus, and a new species, Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus (Queloz et al., 2010). Furthermore, studies suggested that H. albidus was likely a non-pathogenic species, whereas H. pseudoalbidus was the virulent species responsible for the current ash dieback epidemic in Europe (Queloz et al., 2010). [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] RESUMEN. El objetivo principal de este estudio fue evaluar la diversidad de arañas del Área Natural Protegida Isla Quevedo. Se realizó un estudio comparativo de la riqueza y abundancia del orden Araneae en 3 tipos de vegetación: matorral espinoso, manglar y dunas. Los especímenes colectados se obtuvieron mediante 3 métodos: colecta manual, red de golpeo y trampas pitfall. Se obtuvieron 302 arañas en total, todas del suborden Araneomorphae, pertenecientes a 10 familias, 17 géneros y 22 especies. En el matorral espinoso se registraron 14 especies, 5 de las cuales se comparten con el manglar. Las 22 especies determinadas representan el primer inventario del orden Araneae para la isla. La mayor riqueza y abundancia se registró en el matorral espinoso, seguido por el manglar y después las dunas, lo cual comprueba que las arañas son abundantes en zonas de vegetación diversa. Ash Dieback and Dutch Elm Disease: Current Situation and Prospects in Slovenia. Baltic Forestry 24(2): 181184. Abstract Ash dieback has been present in Slovenia since 2006, and Dutch elm disease since 1929. We have evaluated their current situation in Slovenia based on sanitary felling. Sanitary felling of ash has risen exponentially from 2009 to 2017. In 2017, 76,101 m³ of ash or 69% of total ash felling was due to ash dieback, which represents 2% of ash wood stock. Geographically more damaged forests (0.5 2.1% of ash wood stock per forest management unit) were in the eastern part of Slovenia. We suspect that the sanitary felling of ash will escalate due to the current exponential trend, and wood stock of ash will drop by 2040% in next 10 years. From 1995 to 2013, between 51 and 59% of elms was sanitary felled due to Dutch elm disease. Trend of sanitary felling was disturbed between 2014 and 2016 because of the catastrophic ice damage that happened in 2014. The most damaged areas are in the southern part of Slovenia, where 1175% of elms wood stock per forest management unit was damaged due to Dutch elm disease. However, in the most cases, only up to 2% of elm wood stock was sanitarily felled. -

What does the reproductive ecology in the crowns of temperate forest trees look like? These connected questions intrigued researchers before and since Darwin but it is only in the last years that a direct study of the latter question has been enabled. A research crane was used to study the flowering ecology of Fraxinus excelsior, Acer platanoides, Acer pseudoplatanus and Tilia cordata in Leipzig’s floodplain forest. These species originate from hermaphrodite insect pollinated plant families and exhibit different grades of gender separation and different stages between insect and wind pollination. As they are typical elements of temperate deciduous forests, an ecological comparison of their flowering ecology may shed new light on the evolution of gender separation and wind pollination in this habitat. Using the crane, gender distribution, flowering phenology in relation to microclimate, pollination levels (including pollen tubes in the styles) and fruit set were studied in ca. 200 trees over 2-4 years. Main results are a new appreciation of the sexual system of Fraxinus excelsior as dioecy, of Tilia cordata as andromonoecy and a detailed description of the intricacies of the heterodichogamous sexual system of Acer pseudoplatanus. -
Cheshire (Vice County 58) Moth Report for 2016
CHESHIRE (VICE COUNTY 58) MOTH REPORT FOR 2016 Oleander Hawk-Moth: Les Hall Authors: Steve H. Hind and Steve W. Holmes Date: May 2016 Cheshire moth report 2016 Introduction This was the final year of recording for the National Macro-moth Atlas. A few species were added to squares during daytime searches early in the year but any plans to trap in under- recorded squares were often thwarted by cold nights and it was not until mid-July that SHH considered it worthwhile venturing into the uplands. The overall atlas coverage in the county has been good and our results should compare well against the rest of the country, although there remain gaps in most squares, where we failed to find species which are most likely present. Hopefully these gaps will be filled over the next few years, as recording of our Macro-moths continue. As always, a list of those species new for their respective 10km squares during 2016 can be found after the main report. A special effort was made during the winter to add historical records from the collections at Manchester Museum and past entomological journals, which will enable us to compare our current data with that of the past. Now that recording for the Macro- moth atlas is over, our efforts turn to the Micro-moths and the ongoing Micro-moth recording scheme. There is a lot to discover about the distributions of our Micro-moths across the county and the increasing interest continues to add much valuable information. 2016 was another poor year for moths, with results from the national Garden Moth Scheme showing a 20% decline on 2015 (excluding Diamond-back Moth, of which there was a significant invasion).
