BULLETIN OF VOLUME 11, NUMBER 2 THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA STATE MUSEUM February, 1988 ABSTRACT A Monograph of the Genus Polyphylla Harris in America North of Mexico (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) Ronald M. Young The North American species of the genus Po/yphyl/a Harris, 1841, are defined and revised for the first time since Fall (1928). All name bearing types were examined except those of P. ok/ahomensis Hatch and P. subvittata LeConte (synonyms of P. hammondl), which are lost. A lectotype is designated for P. gracilis Horn, and neotypes for P. decemlineata (Say), P. occidentalis (L.), and P. vari%sa (Hentz). New synonyms of P. decemlineata are P. comstockiana von Bloeker, P. matrona Casey, and P. potsiana Casey. New synonyms of P. crinita LeConte are P. pacifica Casey and P. ruficol/is perversa Casey. P. al/eni Cazier is a new synonym of P. diffracta Casey. P. crinita nigra Casey is raised to specific rank and P. inco/umis relicta Casey, P. inco/umis robustu/a Casey, P. martini von Bloeker, and P. santacruzae von Bloeker are its new synonyms. New synonyms of P. hammondi LeConte are P. /atifrons Casey, P. ru­ fescenta Tanner, P. speciosa Casey, and P. speciosa acomana Casey. P. marginata is a nomen nudum. Descriptions of first known females are given for P. barbata Cazier, P. devestiva Young, and P. erratica Hardy and Andrews. P. mesca/erensis is a new species from southeastern New Mexico. Of the 71 names established since 1767 which represent Po/yphyl/a, 28 are recognized as valid. Females are unknown for 12 species. These species cluster morphologically and geographically into four species complexes. A key to larvae is provided for the four species having described larvae. A key to adults is provided, and all taxa are described or redescribed and illustrated by photographs. Available biological information is included. Distributional data and maps based on 14,094 specimens are provided. A cladistic interpre­ tation and hypothetical phylogeny of the genus are constructed. In old times, cockchafer populations were reduced mechanically, by manual collection during the swarming period or by covering soil surfaces to prevent egg lying by females. Chemical pest control methods were introduced in the fifties of the 1900s, and in subsequent 50 years, they were improved to be less and less environmentally threatening. In many countries, including Poland, there have recently been intro- duced progressive restrictions on the use of insecticides in forestry. Banning chemical treatments against cockchaf- ers resulted in going back to traditional methods and seeking alternate solutions, e.g. biological control agents. In the 1990s, polyethylene nets were used to prevent egg laying in the soil by cockchafer females. At the same time, there was tested possible usefulness of a botanical insecticide derived from neem (Azadirachta indica) to combat cock- chafer adults. The net, which needs to be spread flat on the ground, can be effective in orchards, however, in forested areas, the success of this method was limited due to the specific structure of forest land.

Price Department of Biological Sciences Salisbury University This document is a pictorial reference of Maryland Scarabaeoidea genera (and sometimes species) that was created to expedite the identification of Maryland Scarabs. Our current understanding of Maryland Scarabs comes from “An Annotated Checklist of the Scarabaeoidea (Coleoptera) of Maryland” (Staines 1984). Staines reported 266 species and subspecies using literature and review of several Maryland Museums. Dr. Price and her research students are currently conducting a bioinventory of Maryland Scarabs that will be used to create a “Taxonomic Guide to the Scarabaeoidea of Maryland”. There are described the methods used at times when mechan- ical and chemical treatments were applied as well as those under advanced research. In the past, cockchafer grubs were manually removed from plowed soils. Later on, chemical pest control commenced in plant protection practice, and a range of insecticides were either spotted directly onto plants or applied into planting rows, otherwise an entire planting area was treated. In that case, powder or granular insecticide formulations were mixed with upper soil lay- ers, but liquid insecticides were poured into the soil around seedlings. The active substance of initial plant protection products used in Poland to control cockchafer grubs was lindane (organochlorine neurotoxin), which showed pretty high efficacy. Nevertheless, organochlorine products must have been withdrawn from the market and less damaging to the environment pesticides (organophosphates and carbamates) were recommended for use in forest protection against cockchafer grubs. As a result of progressive restrictions concerning application of chemicals into forest environment, alternate solutions have been sought, e.g. biological methods of cockchafer grub control have been tested.

Listed under each valid species are synonymies, distributional data by country, and citations for new combinations and spellings. A complete bibliography is included in the “References” section of all papers mentioned in the checklist. The purpose of this checklist is to present accurate and complete information for all the names of Melolonthinae in the New World. The taxonomy herein is based on the current literature (even if we have unpublished data contradicting what has been published) and the nomenclature carefully follows the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.

In the present study, the first record, occurrence and distribution of three different pathogens: two protistan pathogens; a coccidian and a neogregarine, and an entomopoxvirus from the European cockchafer, Melolontha melolontha L. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) are given. A neogregarine pathogen was recorded for the first time from M. melolontha populations. A coccidian pathogen, Adelina melolonthae was recorded for the first time for Turkey. An entomopoxvirus was recorded from a new locality, Kocaeli in Turkey, The infections caused by pathogens were observed in the haemolymph and fat body of the adults and larvae. The occurrence and distribution of these pathogens in the M. melolontha populations are also presented. Key words: biological control, Melolontha melolontha, entomopathogen, protist, neogregarine. Biological Nomenclature Nomenclature: nomen (name) and calare (to call) -- to call by name One of the primary responsibilities of systematic biology is the development of a system of biological nomenclature and classifications. Nomenclature is of utmost importance in systematics and taxonomy and is necessary in organizing information about the vast biodiversity (Nomenclature functions to provide labels (names) for all taxa at all levels in the hierarchy of life. Carrolous Linnaeus was the first to establish a system of organizing the diversity of life in a hierarchical classification and developed a consistent binomial system of naming. He established latin as the common language for the scientific naming of all organisms as latin used to be an important language at the time of Linnaeus. Therefore, latin came to be a critical language for international communication. As will be seen below the various Codes for nomenclature consider Latin to be an essential language. • Taxa at the level of species are named with binomials, consisting of generic and specific epithets or names that together equal the species name • Taxa above the level of species are Supraspecific Taxa and are Uninominals. • Taxa below the level of species are Subspecies and are Trinominals. The binomial system has been a successful system because it is the only system that has been universally accepted.
