Larvae of 17 Lycaenidae butterfly species from Europe, North America, South East Asia and Australia were observed to retain at least some of their adaptations related to myrmecophily even after parasitic braconid larvae have emerged from them. The myrme- cophilous glandular organs and vibratory muscles of such larval carcasses remain functional for up to 8 days. The cuticle of lycaenid larvae contains extractable “adoption substances” which elicit anten- nal drumming in their tending ants. These adoption substances, as well, appear to persist in a functional state beyond parasitoid emer- gence, and the larval carcasses are hence tended much like healthy caterpillars. In all examples, the braconids may receive selective advantages through myrmecophily of their host larvae, instead of being suppressed by the ant guard. Interactions where parasitoids exploit the ant-mutualism of their lycaenid hosts have as yet been recorded only from the Apanteles group in the Braconidae- Microgasterinae. Kirton Forest Research Institute Malaysia, Kepong, 52109 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Acacia mangium Willd. is presently the most widely planted fast-growing exotic tree species for forest plantations in Peninsular Malaysia. This legume is native to the Molucca Islands of eastern Indonesia, southwestern New Guine smala d alan area of northwestern Queensland in Australia. It was first planted in Sabah and then in the peninsula in the late 1970s. Plantations of A. mangium, like other monocultures, are exposed to risks of introduced indigenoud an s insect pests genera.A l overvie mangium. A f wo pests gives i Hutacharery nb n (1993). However, some of the pests mentioned in the review were not encountered in the present study, and vice versa. Surveys in various plantation nurseries were carried out from 1989 to 1995. Immature insects were collected and reared to adult stage in the laboratory. Corrections are made to the published taxonomy and distribution of H. phorbas (Fabricius, 1793). This clarification enables a better understanding of the biogeography of the genus. Hypolycaena asahi Okubo, 2007, was originally described from a single female from Ambon and is here recorded from Seram. The male is described for the first time. Vane-Wright and Peggie (1994) comment that, geologically, the northern islands of Halmahera, Ternate, Mo- rotai and Bacan form a complex of land areas variously related to New Guinea, while the Buru, Ambon, Seram arc is related to North-West Australia. -

PAHLANO BAUD and MARTIN DOMITS Amakusa Marine Biological Laboratory, Kyushu University, Kumamoto 863-2507, Japan ABSTRACT.- Larvae of the common hairstreak of the Indo-Pacific tropics, Hypolycaena erylus (Godart), were observed for the first time to feed on the leaves of the mangrove apple, Sonneralia alba (Sonneratiaceae), in the intcrtidal habitats of Bunaken, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. 5. alba appears to be a preferred host plant of H. erylus in mangrove habitats where larvae are attended by the Indo-Australian weaver ants, Oecophylla smamgdina. Early instars were found in the ants' arboreal nest, while late instars were free-roaming, being attended by the weaver ants. Khan Environmental Biology and Biodiversity Laboratory (EBBL), Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh Abstract A field investigation was carried out from January 2015 to December 2017 to study the status of some lycaenid butterflies in some selected forest areas of Bangladesh. A total of 6,724 lycaenids was recorded from Butterfly Research Park at Bhawal National Park, Gazipur; Madhupur National Park, Tangail; Satchori National Park and Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary of Habigonj. The dominant species was Arhopala pseudocentaurus with 21.85% relative frequency and the least abundant species was Rathinda amor with 0.75% relative frequency. Butterfly Research Park showed the maximum number of butterfly individuals with a covariance of 40% followed by Madhupur National Park (37%), Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary (13%), and Satchori National Park (10%). A significant difference (F = 3.52, p-value = 0.02) has been assessed using „One-way ANOVA‟ test. The difference in the availability of butterflies in different habitats indicated the differences in plant diversity among the forests. Lycaenid butterflies displayed highest abundance (13.19%) in December and lowest (5.38%) in October. There was no significant difference (F = 0.72, p-value = 0.71) among different months throughout the study period in overall species abundance though highest number was recorded in December. The abiotic factors (viz. temperature and relative humidity etc.) influence the presence of butterflies. -

The results of a lepidopterological (Hesperioidea, Papilionoidea) expedition to Yunnan, China in 2006 are presented. In Appendix I all butterfl y and skipper species observed during the expedition are recorded in an increasing altitudinal gradient separated into four altitudinal classes, from 760 m to 3000 m. Some taxa mentioned in Appendix I are reviewed for reasons of taxonomy, distribution, or scarcity. The change in species composition from low to high altitude and the biogeography of some taxa with both Oriental and Palaearctic distributions are discussed. The faunal similarity between the different altitudinal classes was calculated and the interface between the Oriental and Palaearctic faunas in relation to latitude is briefl y discussed. Introduction Our knowledge of the butterfl y (including Hesperiidae) fauna of Yunnan (the southwest of the People’s Republic of China) has increased in the last 10 years and many faunis- tic and taxonomic publications on the butterfl ies and skippers of this part of China are now available: Bozano (1999), Chou (1994), Della Bruna et al. (2002, 2004), Huang (2001, 2003), Huang & Wu (2003), Huang & Xue (2004), Tuzov & Bozano (2006), and Weidenhoffer et al. (2004). These workers have compiled a lot of data on the but- terfl y fauna of Yunnan, but much information remains to be gathered. -

[email protected] Abstract. A new species, Hypolycaena narada, sp. nov., is described from a series of male specimens from Arunachal Pradesh, north-eastern India. The new species is considerably distinct from other members of the tribe Hypolycaenini, and is easily distinguished from its relatives based on the following combination of characters: (a) slightly shining purple-blue upperside forewing with a dark, diffused androconial patch, (b) underside forewing apex and margin concolorous with the wing, (c) underside wings with narrow discal bands, ending in black costal spots, and (d) coastal black spot near the base.
