As winter approaches we are hopeful that the New Year will bring good news for everyone… turn over to find out more about our hopes and plans for 2021 Registered Charity No: 1101140 Hello from your CEO David Rowan Well, what an eventful year it has been. It started off like most New Year’s do, very quiet. Then, in mid-February we started to hear of cases of a new virus in China that was initially thought to be localised and similar to the SARS virus of 2003. It quickly became apparent that this was a completely different virus and far more infectious. Within a matter of weeks, the virus had spread beyond China and we ultimately ended up with the Coronavirus pandemic that has gone on to effect most, if not all countries in the world. We then went into our first 12-week lockdown and our Centre had to close its doors to the public for the very first time. All our outreach activities were cancelled including lipreading and sign language classes, support groups and our hearing aid maintenance service. However, a skeleton staff continued to work from the office providing vital support and information to clients by telephone, text and email. We also started our new “hearing aid batteries by post” service which we have continued to provide ever since, and will carry on doing until a more ‘normal’ life returns. However, this year has not been all doom and gloom. It was towards the end of the first lockdown that we realised we wouldn’t be able to resume our classes and equipment demonstrations from St Leonards Road because of the new covid distancing requirements and so we took the 2 plunge and moved into new, bright, comfortable and spacious premises in Chantry House, just a short walk from St Leonards Road. -

Much of the site has been considerably impacted upon by buildings associated with the Ditton Laboratory, and by the landscaping of the areas between these buildings. It is possible that sub-surface archaeological remains may have survived in the far eastern part of the site, which has not been significantly developed. If any archaeological mitigation is required, it may be appropriate for an archaeological watching brief to be carried out during groundworks in this area. Written evidence submitted by East Sussex County Council [ASC 021] • How has Covid-19 changed the landscape for long-term funding reform of the adult social care sector? The challenges facing the adult social care market prior to the pandemic are well documented and, in many cases, have been brought into sharp focus over the last 12 months. Local Authority published rates; contract arrangements (e.g. block arrangements); commissioning approaches (e.g. strategic partners) and CCG funding agreements including Better Care Fund allocations are all key funding reform considerations which sit alongside the necessity to offer choice, personalised care and high quality, safe services. Residential and nursing care There are 306 registered care homes in East Sussex – the majority are small independently run homes, which don’t have the wrap-around organisational infrastructure enjoyed by larger / national providers. In East Sussex, Local Authority placements are made across around one-third of the residential and nursing care market. At the peak of the second wave over 100 care homes in East Sussex were closed to admissions due to Covid outbreaks. Week commencing 04/01/21 there were 853 confirmed cases of Covid19 in East Sussex care home settings. During 2021, as of the week ending 19/03/2021, East Sussex has had 2,404 deaths registered in total and 1,110 of these have been attributable to COVID-19, of which 597 have occurred in hospital and 436 have occurred in care homes (LG reform data). In the two years up to April 2019, there were 26 residential and nursing home closures in East Sussex resulting in a loss of 435 beds, across all care groups. -

River Medway: Medway Valley Walk
AINA CASE STUDY HEALTH, WELL-BEING, RECREATION AND SPORT River Medway: Medway Valley Walk Access for all and a series of circular walks help open up the riverside paths The River Medway is the longest river and longest navigation in Kent and forms part of the Environment Agency’s Medway Region. Once used for commercial trade, the river between Maidstone and Tonbridge is now a public navigation, and the Medway Valley Walk provides riverbank access through the 'Garden of England'. Using existing rights of ways, five shorter circular walks also link directly to the riverside. The Medway Valley Countryside Partnership, comprising Kent County Council, Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, Maidstone Borough Council and the Environment Agency, works to encourage more people to enjoy and explore the 18 mile walk and its local countryside. Typical improvements have included widening the path, installing bridge ramps and removing stiles. Surfacing work to enable greater access for all has been undertaken in key areas on the edge of towns or villages. The partnership also secured £204,000 from partners and EU Interreg which allowed bank restoration by specialist contractors, installation of disabled fishing platforms and a large number of smaller access improvements. Local volunteers help the partnership too, and their work includes path clearance and installation of handrails. Relatively inexpensive, the collective result along the path has a great benefit for accessibility and enjoyment of the riverside. The Riverside Communities Project - funded by the Heritage Lottery, Ernest Cook Trust and the Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation – developed as 2½ year project (2006-09) which engaged local people with their river in a programme of events, school workshops and interpretative work. -

A Leading Centre of British, European and World Maritime Heritage
THE RIVER MEDWAY – A LEADING CENTRE OF BRITISH, EUROPEAN AND WORLD MARITIME HERITAGE 1. Introduction The river Medway is already a leading centre of British, European and World maritime heritage. It’s just that not too many local people realise it yet. The role of the river, in establishing the Medway Council’s conurbation as a major international tourism area, is seriously undervalued by all of the agencies that control the river and its environs. The river shares, with the Chatham Historic Dockyard, the greatest and most diverse collection of historic ships in the United Kingdom. The speedy recognition and marketing of this relatively dormant resource will be to the benefit of Kent and the British national maritime heritage. For a fortnight in June 2017, 200 Dutch tall ships, historic ships and yachts visited the Medway to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the Battle of Chatham. Their parades of sail and parties demonstrated how seriously underutilised the river usually is. Proper investment by the many developers that are, and; will continue to be, building urban developments on the riverside sites, should recognise the significant additional value that the adjacent river gives them. ‘Think not of what your river can do for you, think of what you can do for your river’ THE RIVER MEDWAY – A LEADING CENTRE OF BRITISH, EUROPEAN AND WORLD MARITIME HERITAGE However, money is not the prime driver for the recognition of the river’s value. The principal requirement is for enthusiasm from all the agencies involved. There is an urgent need for these agencies to meet, as an interested and integrated forum, to share in, and; mutually benefit from, the river Medway attaining its rightful status The agencies include; The Medway Council; Peel Ports; The Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust (CHDT); Chatham Maritime Trust; Grain LNG; The Environment Agency; GPS Marine; Scott Line; The Medway and Swale Boating Association (MSBA); The Royal Engineers; Kent County Constabulary; and leading riverside residential developers etc. -
