The Man Who Had To Be Elected Pope Dg, 2/04/2017 URL article: http://magister.blogautore.espresso.repubblica.it/2017/04/02/the-man-who-had-to- … > Italiano > English > Español > Français > All the articles of Settimo Cielo in English * Mission accomplished. After four years of pontificate, this is the assessment that has been made by the cardinals who brought Jorge Mario Bergoglio to election as pope. The operation that produced the Francis phenomenon arises from a long time ago, as far back as 2002, when for the first time "L'Espresso" discovered and wrote that the then little-known archbishop of Buenos Aires had leapt to the top of the candidates for the papacy, the real ones, not the figureheads. It laid the groundwork at the conclave of 2005, when it was to none other than Bergoglio that all the votes were funneled from those who did not want Joseph Ratzinger as pope. And it came into port at the conclave of 2013, to a large extent because many of his electors still knew very little about that Argentine cardinal, and certainly not that he would deal the Church that “punch in the stomach” spoken of a few days ago by his rival defeated in the Sistine Chapel, Milan archbishop Angelo Scola. Between Bergoglio and his great electors there was not and is not full agreement. He is the pope of proclamations more than of realizations, of allusions more than of definitions. There is however one key factor that meets the expectations of a historic turning point of the Church capable of making up for its emblematic lag of “two hundred years” with respect to the modern world that was denounced by Carlo Maria Martini, the cardinal who loved to call himself the “ante-pope,” meaning the anticipator of the one who was to come.

News in Review – April 2013 – Teacher Resource Guide THE POPE: Resignation and Election 2013 MINDS‐ON ACTIVITY When it is time to elect a new pope, the cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church come from all over the world to take part in a papal conclave in Rome. Behind the sealed doors of the Sistine Chapel, the cardinals pick the man who will follow in footsteps of St. Peter. Going into the conclave of 2013, many believed that Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Quebec had a realistic chance of earning the papacy. As head of the Vatican’s office of bishops, Ouellet was a well-known and respected Catholic cleric who garnered strong support in the early voting. However, Ouellet, much to his relief, did not become pope. 1. What would it be like to have a Canadian as Roman Catholic pope? 2. Do you think church attendance would improve among Catholic Canadians if Ouelett were pope? 3. Would it be a source of national pride if a Canadian held such a prestigious office? THE UNITY OF LOVE AND THE FACE OF MAN: AN INVITATION TO READ DEUS CARITAS EST • Angelo Cardinal Scola • “Love is one. Eros and agape cannot be set against each other.” In his first encyclical, Benedict XVI, who served the Church as a cardinal for more than two decades in the burdensome task of safeguarding truth, tackles the theme of love—a choice that has probably surprised quite a number of people. It will have been no surprise, however, to anyone who remembers the eucharistic celebration of the Day of Forgiveness on the first Sunday of Lent in the Great Jubilee Year 2000. On that occasion, as a stirring echo of the tender embrace with which John Paul II, already quite ill, was wrapping up the celebrated crucifix of St. Marcellinus, there rang out the prayer spoken at the Altar of Confession by the then- Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith: “Let us pray that each one of us, recognizing that at times even men of the Church have resorted to un-Christian methods in the nonetheless obligatory task of defending the truth, is able to imitate the Lord Jesus in his meekness and humility of heart.” In the meek and humble Heart of the Lord Jesus—the Heart ablaze with love, as the wisdom of tradition has taught us to invoke him—is found the full manifestation of the truth of God and man, the center of our faith: Truth-Love. Azzurra Giorgi (March 13, 2013) After the resignation of Joseph Ratzinger, the Conclave that will lead to the election of a new Pope began in Vatican City. Here is the list of those who are most likely to become the new leader of the Catholic Church. After Joseph Ratzinger resigned as Pope Benedict XVI, there are great expectations of the one who will take his place. After weeks of waiting, the first day of the Conclave has arrived. Here below is the list of those who are most likely candidates for becoming the new Pope. ANGELO SCOLA [2]: Archbishop of Milan, 71 years old. Well esteemed by Ratzinger, who wanted him in the theological magazine 'Communio,' he comes from two dioceses, Milan and Venice, that gave five different Popes in the last century. He is very reluctant of taking on a label and he has an open look on modernity. Page 1 of 3 The Conclave Has Begun. Who Will Be the New Pope?
