It is less than 100 meters from the mainland of Greece linked by a floating bridge. Lefkada has an exceptional flora with many pine forests, olive groves and cypress trees creating the distinctive landscape. 70% mountainous, its highest peak being 1182m situated in the center of the island at Stavrota. The private Island belonging to the famous shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis. Since the death of most of the family ownership has fallen to Athina , his granddaughter, who has apparently put the island up for sale recently. Swimming here in the crystal clear waters is a must. A small island to the east of Lefkada approximately 20 sq km. It has a permanent population of 1,200 and consists of three villages, Spartachori, Vathy and Katomeri each with pretty little ports. There are several bays where safe harbour can be found and the southeast coast has a few caves, including the famous cave of Papanikolis, which has a history of being the hiding place of a submarine during the Second World War and is also the second largest cave in Greece. A very small uninhabited island between Meganisi and Kastos. A haven for wild birds and sometimes home to the rare Mediterranean monk seal, it also provides habitat for a colony of protected species of large clam. Its’ transparent blue water makes for a fabulous swim stop. This small unspoiled island has a surface area of 6 sq km and is only 900 meters at its widest point. Around 50 people inhabit this timeless village with its beautiful coastline and many hidden beaches of white and turquoise. A little busier than Kastos but still not much in the way of tourism, only 20 sq km, home to around 500 people. Its highest peak is 200m. Half covered in a pine forest of a particular genus which grows almost to the waters’ edge in places such as Asprogiali, a stunning little beach on the northern tip of the island. Legendary home of Odysseus according to some historians. Since the earthquake of 1953, the main port, Vathy, was rebuilt in the Venetian style, creating a beautifully picturesque bay. One of the larger Ionian Islands famous for its beautiful beaches but more famous amongst sailors for the strong winds that form in the Ithaca – Kefalonia channel, providing some excellent sailing opportunities. The spectacular coastline of Zakynthos is famous. In the north the Blue Caves and Shipwreck Beach, at the south a national marine park with nesting sites of the loggerhead turtle. The island is diverse enough to provide places to relax and get away from it all but also caters to those looking for full on entertainment. .

Alcuni giorni la partenza da Mytikas era prevista per le 11.30 in altri per le 14.00. In alta stagione sono previste due corse per permettere la visita giornaliera. Gli orari possono cambiare e pertanto è meglio controllarli nella taverna del porto, dove sono esposti all'entrata, con i numeri di telefono di Bambis, giovane introverso conduttore del ferry, cell. + 30 6977 078057. E' disponibile anche un servizio di taxi boat che in dieci minuti raggiunge l'isola. Costa 50 euro. L'operatore più affidabile pare essere Georgios, cell. +306977845946. Il trasporto auto non è possibile, al massimo un motorino o una bicicletta può contendere il posto nel minuscolo ponte del naviglio, alle merci destinate a rifornire i trenta abitanti dell'isola e soprattutto i tre ristoranti che lavorano prevalentemente con i diportisti che arrivano nel porto.

The countless islands with all their beauty, make Ionian Greece a destination that can offer exciting places to visit without the fear of getting bored. Here are few of our favorite itineraries: 1. CORFU TO CORFU ROUTE A : We sail around Corfu, visiting the stunning coastline of Paleochastrisa, sailing to Paxos and Antipaxos, and then navigate the mainland coast stopping in Parga, Mourtos and other beautiful locations. Returning to Corfu. ROUTE B : It takes us to the north of Corfu to visit the small but beautiful Diapontinie islands of Othoni, Erikoussa and Mathraki. Afterwards we will sail south to Paxos and Antipaxos and then return to Corfu. (Parga may be included as well, time dependent.) ROUTE C : More navigation from Corfu to Lefkas. We move to the west of Lefkas and stop in the lively Fiskardo on Cefalonia. Afterwards we head north-east up the Inland Sea touching Meganisi, Skorpios, the east coast of Lefkas, following the channel returning to Corfu via Paxos. (this is the most classic of routes) 2. CORFU TO ZAKYNTHOS (ZANTE) one way in 1 week (for the round trip allow 2 weeks) - From Corfu, we sail a coastal route, the channel of Lefkada, then descend and touch Meganisi, Fiscardo, Ithaca, west coast of Zakynthos and finish in the south of the island, in the beautiful bay of Laganas, where the turtles nest on the beaches.

A few mishaps on the Norfolk Broads don’t mean that every outing will lead to a collision or a capsize. The point about a flotilla holiday, I explained, is that experts are on hand for the tricky bits. So we found ourselves one inky Sunday night in the little port of Palairos looking for a sailing boat called Hercules. Boarding a boat at the beginning of a voyage is even better than birthdays. For the children (then aged 11, 15 and 16), it was mainly about furniture. Up front, Hercules had a triangular cabin fitted with two berths. In the stern, there was another double cabin. The long upholstered seat in the main saloon converted into a fifth berth. There was a galley with gas rings, oven, sink and coolbox, and through a narrow door behind the chart table, a loo with a shower. Ranged around the cabins were hideaways, shelves and cupboards for books, cameras, hats, sun cream and all the related gubbins that had exploded from our rucksacks.

Emphasis is given to the ways of overcoming underutilization of infrastructures in order to achieve sustainable local development. The interest of this approach, especially for city and regional planners, lies on the importance of tourist activity in fragile island areas of Mediterranean and consequently on planning methods used to solve problems related to the carrying capacity of existing natural and human ecosystems and to the construction of appropriate infrastructures in a ‘pulsar’ context. 1. Introduction The Ionian islands (Greece) are experiencing dramatic pressures from tourism, after a long period of socio-economic decline and abandonment due to out migration in the fifties, sixties and seventies. Tourism has provided with unique opportunities for development influencing several branches of the economy, the local societies and environmental resources. However, tourism is also characterized by strong seasonality which influences the performance of the island human and natural ecosystems with overloading of space, infrastructure and services in the summer and underutilization in the rest of the year. Such fluctuations affect the design and raise the costs and undermine the feasibility of construction and maintenance of basic infrastructure and services. This has been a “headache” for local and national planning administrations.

The jetty lies in front of the Armonia hotel where one can make use of the many facilities that the hotel has to offer. Nidri itself has a lively village with a pleasant boulevard. Sunday Nidri - Sivota Sivota on Lefkas is a traditional village in the southeast of the island, approximately 33 kilometers from Lefkada town. It is located in a closed bay surrounded by lots of gree- nery. The bay is closed so that the sea looks more like a lake surrounded by beautifully overgrown hills and mountains. Sivota is a cozy village with nice terraces and restaurants at the water. Monday Sivota - Fiskardo Fiskardo on the island of Kefalonia, is a place that you will certainly keep up with the co- lorfulness of the houses. This village survived the earthquake of 1953 as the only one. This place is very cozy and beautiful and so popular! Many terraces on the water, mundane; the Monaco of the Ionian Sea. Tuesday Fiskardo - Eufemia Eufemia is a nice village with a beautiful beach. You can take a diving course here if you want to. The restaurant at the end of the village, where you have a view of the lights of Sami, has a delicious menu. The food here is Greek for luxury; the homemade chocolate bavarois with sabayon sauce tastes delicious! Wednesday Eufemia - Agios Nikolaios The village of Agios Nikolaos itself is not that big and is scattered in the bowl-shaped bay.

Technically speaking, recal- culating the impact of summer residents and visitors, the human pressure on the island is equivalent to 6,182 all-year inhabitants. The demand for water can be estimated to 247 million litres/year, of which is seems the islanders use of rainwater meets one third of the demand. The municipality really has some creative ways to save water, mainly a brilliant back- wards billing system and a flat rate policy for green hotels (well defined). The islanders are a role model for any island on how to save and use rainwater in their households. From a water saving point of view, Ithaka should continue seaking for leaks and change some of the older ACC mains (Vathi), and get more hotels to become green.

Ionian Islands & suggested itineraries The Ionian Sea is one of the most idyllic cruising areas of the Mediterranean. Crystal clear turquoise waters, charming little villages, spectacular countryside and a pleasant north westerly breeze which rarely exceeds force 5, make it a sailor’s paradise! It is located at the western side of mainland Greece and it stretches all the way from Corfu in the north to Zante in the south. The Ionian Sea is one of our favorite cruising areas, so we’ll try to describe the islands for you here, although it’s difficult to put in words their real beauty! One thing that makes the western side of Greece different is the lush vegetation, which consists mostly of olive groves, vineyards, a variety of fruit trees but also pine and cyprus forests. And all that, thanks to the high rainfall that this area receives in the winter, between November and March. With the exception of the two bigger and more touristy islands (Corfu and Zante), the rest are off the beaten track and the best way to visit them is by yacht, as they don’t even have ports or airports. The locals who are mostly fishermen and farmers are very laid back and friendly, so we are not surprised when we often hear our guests mention that during their evening walk they were invited by an old lady to her garden for a cup of coffee! For our cruises we have chosen Lefkas as a base, because it is located in the center of the Ionian Islands.
