Dear Film Fans It may be back to school me for the kids, but that doesn't mean the entertainment at the cinema stops, with some big-screen blockbusters and live theatre screenings joining us this month. If you're one of the many film fans who just can't get enough of the Fast and Furious franchise then the Hobbs & Shaw spin-off will be just up your street. Centred on the main characters Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), and Shaw (Jason Statham) they find themselves forced to form an uneasy alliance, when a genecally enhanced villain (Idris Elba) threatens the world with a deadly virus. Possibly one of the most ancipated and talked about films this year has to be Quenn Taranno's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The ninth film from the notorious director is a tribute to the twilight years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 LA. Faded television actor (Leonard DiCaprio) and his stunt double (Brad Pi) find themselves in the middle of an industry which is changing so fast they don't even recognise half the key players. Featuring a stellar cast, including Margot Robbie, Emilie Hirsch, Dakota Fanning, Damian Lewis and Al Pacino, to name just a few. One of Britain's most iconic arst's relaonships with his mother is depicted in Mrs Lowry & Son. The film follows L.S.Lowry (Timothy Spall) from the beginning of his career as his over-bearing mother Elizabeth (Vanessa Redgrave) tries to dissuade him from pursuing his arsc dreams. We have two encore screenings from the Naonal Theatre this month with the award-winning Fleabag and One Man, Two Guvnors. The hilarious one-woman show Fleabag inspired the BBC hit TV series. Wrien and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge this show has played to sold-out audiences in New York and London. Featuring a Tony Award-winning performance from James Corden as Francis Henshall, One Man, Two Guvnors is set in 1963 Brighton. Francis, an out of work skiffle player, finds himself employed by two guvnors he must keep apart. This producon has earned rave reviews with from Guardian describing it as 'One of the funniest producons in the Naonal's history'. BOX OFFICE buxtonoperahouse.org.uk/cinema 01298 72190 @BuxtonCinema The Brish comedy Blinded by the Light tells the story of teenager Javed, who is surrounded by the racial and economic turmoil of the late 80s. Javed finds an escape from his oppressive hometown and controlling father by listening to 'The Boss' Bruce Springsteen. Javed sees parallels between his working-class life and Springsteen's powerful lyrics. Blinded by the Light is inspired by the life of Journalist Sarfraz Manzoor and his memoir Greengs From Bury Park. Our young cinema-goers, can enjoy a new animated tale with UglyDolls. The musical comedy shows a hidden universe of dolls which wait to be chosen for a child. However, different dolls find themselves dropped off into the remote town of Uglville. Poems for life Alllliie Esiirii Opiiniion - Books Tuesday, 4th October 2016 In advance of National Poetry Day, anthologist Allie Esiri writes about the power of poetry to change lives TS Eliot claimed that "poetry can communicate before it is understood". When I discovered poetry as a child, I remember stumbling over weird and wonderful words whose meaning I felt far from understanding, but I think I knew then that poetry held a remarkable power. My childhood private passion has become my career: I spend most of my time reading poetry, writing about poetry, and banging the metaphorical drum for poetry. Over the past few years I've tried to remind people how remarkable and exhilarating poetry is. I've co-created apps such as iF Poems and The Love Book, where fantastic actors - Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Hiddleston, Damian Lewis, Helen McCrory, Emma Watson and others - read poems aloud, taking ancient words off the page and bringing them to life. Humans have been writing poetry for thousands of years - even before we had written languages, people spoke poetry aloud in an oral tradition, preserving history and mythology in huge poetic sagas that changed and developed with each retelling. Poets manage to put into words what most of us find hard to articulate. To Alexander Pope, poetry was "what oft was thought, but ne'er so well express'd". Gwendolyn Brooks said that "poetry is life distilled". And when I read John Keats's "To Autumn", which seems to breathe out the smells and tastes and sights of the season, I have to agree with her.
