While these upper- and middle-class women were seeking to reform the relations between the sexes primari- ly within their class, the myth that lower class women in Victo- rian times did not seek or fight for freedom—and mostly relied on the charitable efforts of their upper class benefactors—was born. It is curious that most of us have heard about the suffrag- ettes and the settlement houses, but we know virtually noth- ing of the struggles of lower-class women. These women were already demonstrating that indeed sisterhood is powerful while their upper-class sisters were politely petitioning for reform. The fighting lower-class women, and sometimes girls, of New York City were not giving speeches in convention halls, they were not rubbing shoulders with city officials in the corridors of power, they were not holding soirées in Gramercy parlors; they were living radical feminism on the mean streets of Hell’s Kitchen, the Five Points, and the Lower East Side. Despite its awesome fashions, the Victorian Era was a time when it sucked to be a woman even in the upper and middle classes, and it sucked even harder to be a poor woman. In the teeming impoverished neighborhoods of Lower Manhattan, survival, for independent-minded women, often meant living outside the law. Gangs were a road to status in those neighbor- hoods, as they are in many poor urban areas today. When we think of gangs in New York during this period we think of toughs in dented derbies. The photos of Jakob Riis and the film Gangs of New York by Scorsese come to mind.

However, it is not just the geographical diversity of our field that we celebrate tonight – it’s the diversity within fandom. Although you might not like the styles of all of the nominated works and you might not choose to read all the myriad sub-genres that exist within speculative fiction, tonight they have their place as Hugo Award nominees, chosen by the community of fans.     KREITER, MICHAEL P., Ph.D., May 2021 SOCIOLOGY "THERE WILL BE NO RECONCILIATION": THE SCIENCE FICTION CULTURE WAR OF WHITE SUPREMACIST PUPPIES (170 PP.) Dissertation Advisor: Tiffany Taylor By analyzing the discourse of Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies, this research shows how an ideology of white supremacy is emerging from the contradictions inherent in colorblind racism. The Sad Puppies are a group of Science Fiction and Fantasy (SFF) fans and writers that formed in online spaces to actively challenge the recent trend in SFF genres of being more inclusive and increasing the diversity of writers and characters. They adhere to the abstract liberalism frame of colorblind racism that asserts that there is no systemic inequality, and that outcomes (like earning literary awards) are the result of individual effort and nothing more. To this end, they see efforts to increase diversity as antithetical to the abstract liberalism frame, as a form of unjust “affirmative action,” which hurts writers like white men precisely because they cannot claim to be “victims.” They employ a variety of discursive strategies to legitimize this political viewpoint, while simultaneously delegitimizing opposing viewpoints that they lump into one all- encompassing group they call “Social Justice Warriors” (SJWs). The success of writers like N. K. Jemisin, the first Black author to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel, can be used by colorblind frames to point to the legitimacy of the ostensibly meritocratic colorblind system. Yet, at the same time, colorblind ideology is simply a justification for the existing racial hierarchy, and Black success is a direct challenge to this hierarchy.

    Mirrorshade Women: Feminism and Cyberpunk at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century Carlen Lavigne McGill University, Montréal Department of Art History and Communication Studies February 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Studies © Carlen Lavigne 2008 2 Abstract This study analyzes works of cyberpunk literature written between 1981 and 2005, and positions women’s cyberpunk as part of a larger cultural discussion of feminist issues. It traces the origins of the genre, reviews critical reactions, and subsequently outlines the ways in which women’s cyberpunk altered genre conventions in order to advance specifically feminist points of view. Novels are examined within their historical contexts; their content is compared to broader trends and controversies within contemporary feminism, and their themes are revealed to be visible reflections of feminist discourse at the end of the twentieth century. The study will ultimately make a case for the treatment of feminist cyberpunk as a unique vehicle for the examination of contemporary women’s issues, and for the analysis of feminist science fiction as a complex source of political ideas. No conventions in October, which is rare these days, but there was the Steampunk Fortnight on Tor.com. They had some seriously good stuff, including writing from Diana Vick, who also appears in these pages, and myself! There was a great piece from Nisi Shawl that mentioned the amazing panel that she, Liz Gorinsky, Michael Swanwick and Ann VanderMeer were on at World Fantasy last year. Jaymee Goh had a piece on Commodification and Post-Modernism that was well-written, though slightly troubling to me. Stephen Hunt’s Steampunk Timeline was good stuff, and the omnipresent GD Falksen (who has never written for us!) had a couple of good piece. Me? I wrote an article about how Tomorrowland was the signpost for the rise of Steampunk. You can read it at http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/10/goodbye-tomorrow- hello-yesterday.     118 Reviews of Books does, the book is a pleasure. He roots it in feminist, race, and sf scholarship, just as he grounds Butler in black American women’s writing traditions and sf tropes. Moreover, he stays focused on his literary argument and doesn’t get lost in the weeds of debates about agency, humanism, and the problematic legacy of the Enlightenment. Ultimately, Of Bodies, Communities, and Voices is indispensable for any Butler scholar, primarily because of the ways he connects so many of her work’s central concerns without reducing its complexity or variety. It will function more as a source of research than pedagogy, except maybe in upper-level classes centered on Butler. I recommend it not only to scholars of Butler but sf in general, especially in terms of afrofuturism, posthumanism, or any of Bast’s focal points (agency, bodies, community, voice). Harlan Wilson Biopunk is among the more recent sf subgenres to emerge from the virtual citadel of 1980s cyberpunk. There have been others—most prominently steampunk, but also splatterpunk, nanopunk, dieselpunk, bugpunk, even elfpunk and monkpunk—but biopunk narratives are perhaps the first truly authentic descendant of the cyberpunks, featuring gritty dystopian settings, beat characters, corporate terrorism, techno-pathology, and body invasion. Instead of hacking computers, however, biopunks hack DNA and operate in worlds where the processes and products of genetic engineering are brought to bear by various forms of mad scientism.

Richard Stevens & Rachel Lara van der Merwe, University of Colorado, USA Abstract: In 2015, toxic fan conflicts disrupted the Hugo Awards selection proceedings. The conflict between the awards voters and a movement known as ‘Puppygate’, led by angry fans, dates back to at least 2012 and comprises thousands of networked conversations enacting toxic frames of contemporary culture wars (heated and often disruptive exchanges characterized by challenges to identity politics, arguments over representation, and conflicting tastes) from all sides. However, these toxic fan discourses emerged within the context of significant cultural changes. Fans exist in communal spaces formed among institutional and cultural forces, yet the drive to create communal culture through shared communication exchanges continually encourage toxic conflicts of social identity and taste. This article considers the toxic exchanges between various actors in the blogs, social media, and formal public statements of the Puppygate controversy to chronicle how structural change is subsumed into frames of ‘culture war’ rhetoric.
