Perhaps the most important influences on my early thinking about this topic came from Paweł Frelik and Larry McCaffery, with whom I shared a rousing desert hike in the foothills of Borrego Springs. After an evening of food, drink, and lively exchange, I had the long-overdue epiphany to channel my training in musical performance more directly into my academic pursuits. Sytsma, B.A., M.T.S. Marquette University, 2018 Origen has traditionally been famous for his universalism, but many scholars now express doubt that Origen believed in a universal and permanent apocatastasis. This is because many scholars are convinced that Origen’s teaching on moral autonomy (or freedom of choice) is logically incompatible with the notion that God foreordains every soul’s future destiny. Those few scholars who do argue that Origen believed in both moral autonomy and universal salvation either do not know how to reconcile these two views in Origen’s theology, or their proposed “solutions” are not convincing. In this dissertation I make two preliminary arguments which allow the question of logical compatibility to come into focus. -

The Future of Robotics An Inside View on Innovation in Robotics FEATURE Robots, Humans and Work Executive Summary Robotics in the Startup Ecosystem The automation of production through three industrial revolutions has increased global output exponentially. Now, with machines increasingly aware and interconnected, Industry 4.0 is upon us. Leading the charge are fleets of autonomous robots. Built by major multinationals and increasingly by innovative VC-backed companies, these robots have already become established participants in many areas of the economy, from assembly lines to farms to restaurants. Investors, founders and policymakers are all still working to conceptualize a framework for these companies and their transformative Austin Badger technology. In this report, we take a data-driven approach to emerging topics in the industry, including business models, performance metrics, Director, Frontier Tech Practice and capitalization trends. Finally, we review leading theories of how automation affects the labor market, and provide quantitative evidence for and against them. It is our view that the social implications of this industry will be massive and will require a continual examination by those driving this technology forward. ELA GRADE LEVEL OVERVIEW GRADE 6 INTRODUCTION | GRADE 6 The Grade 6 Core ELA Units take students through literary and nonfiction texts that explore individuals facing crucial decisions, learning from their responses, becoming a better version of themselves. Unit 1, Testing Our Limits, examines what we do when life gets hard. Unit 2, You and Me, focuses on relationships and asks the Essential Question: How do relationships shape us? Unit 3, In the Dark, asks students to consider how they can figure out what to do when there are no instructions, while Unit 4, Personal Best, asks students to consider the unit’s driving ques- tion—Which qualities of character matter most?—by providing a range of texts that examine individuals wrestling with realistic and familiar struggles. Next, Unit 5, Making Your Mark, asks students to think about their own story. Evans Anachronism in Early French Futuristic Fiction Pawe³ Frelik, in his essay “The Future of the Past: Science Fiction, Retro, and Retrofuturism” (2013), defined the idea of retrofuturism as referring “to the text’s vision of the future, which comes across as anachronistic in relation to contemporary ways of imagining it” (208). Pawe³’s use of the word “anachronistic” in this definition set me to thinking. Aren’t all fictional portrayals of the future always and inevitably anachronistic in some way? Further, I saw in the phrase “contemporary ways of imagining” a delightful ambiguity between two different groups of readers: those of today who, viewing it in retrospect, see such a speculative text as an artifact, an inaccurate vision of the future from the past, but also the original readers, contemporary to the text when it was written, who no doubt saw it as a potentially real future that was chock-full of anachronisms in relation to their own time—but that one day might no longer be. -

Mirrorshade Women: Feminism and Cyberpunk at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century Carlen Lavigne McGill University, Montréal Department of Art History and Communication Studies February 2008 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Studies © Carlen Lavigne 2008 2 Abstract This study analyzes works of cyberpunk literature written between 1981 and 2005, and positions women’s cyberpunk as part of a larger cultural discussion of feminist issues. It traces the origins of the genre, reviews critical reactions, and subsequently outlines the ways in which women’s cyberpunk altered genre conventions in order to advance specifically feminist points of view. Novels are examined within their historical contexts; their content is compared to broader trends and controversies within contemporary feminism, and their themes are revealed to be visible reflections of feminist discourse at the end of the twentieth century. The study will ultimately make a case for the treatment of feminist cyberpunk as a unique vehicle for the examination of contemporary women’s issues, and for the analysis of feminist science fiction as a complex source of political ideas. Cette étude fait l’analyse d’ouvrages de littérature cyberpunk écrits entre 1981 et 2005, et situe la littérature féminine cyberpunk dans le contexte d’une discussion culturelle plus vaste des questions féministes.
