CHICAGO JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018 PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29 Millennium Park – Pritzker Pavilion • 6:30 – 9:00PM – ORBERT DAVIS’ CHICAGO JAZZ PHILHARMONIC: LEGENDS AND LIONS o The CJP is made up of many of Chicago’s finest musicians from the jazz, commercial, and classical communities. Mr. Davis composes large-form works, usually organized around a central theme. This evening’s performance will celebrate both the legends and lions (younger generation) in Chicago’s jazz community. THURSDAY, AUGUST 30 Millennium Park – Pritzker Pavilion • 5:00 PM – Second-line Procession featuring the Big Shoulders Brass Band • 5:25 – 6:15 – Geof Bradfield Nonet o Geof Bradfield is one of the finest saxophonists in Chicago and always presents compelling and interesting programs. He will no doubt be supported by a premier ensemble. • 6:30 – 7:25 - Nicole Mitchell and Mandorla Awakening o Nicole Mitchell is a nationally-recognized jazz flutist, playing music rooted in the avant-garde tradition of Chicago’s AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians). • 7:45 – 9:00 - Kurt Elling featuring Marquis Hill and Jeff "Tain" Watts o Kurt Elling may be the most celebrated jazz vocalist of his generation, having developed his craft weekly for years at Chicago’s Green Mill Jazz Lounge. Here he’ll be joined by one of Chicago’s brightest young stars, trumpeter Marquis Hill, along with one of the most celebrated modern jazz drummers, Jeff “Tain” Watts. This is guaranteed to be an incredible set. FRIDAY, AUGUST 31 Millennium Park – Pritzker Pavilion • 4:15 – 5:05 - Tribute to Dr. Muhal Richard Abrams o A founding member of the AACM and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, pianist and composer Dr. Muhal Richard Abrams was a pillar of the creative and “free” jazz movement. He passed away last fall. He was honored as a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2010. • 5:25 – 6:15 - Sabertooth Organ Quartet 25th Anniversary o This ensemble, consisting of two saxophones, organ, and drums, has been playing the late set at the Green Mill (like 12:30 – 4:00am!) every Saturday for the last 25 years. Their current organist, Pete Benson, taught with New Trier’s FJE for eight years! Don’t miss this group! • 6:30 – 7:25 - Louis Hayes Quintet: “Seranade for Horace” o The 81 year old drummer Louis Hayes is synonymous with Hard Bop, and with his association with Horace Silver. He’s the drummer on many of the most memorable jazz records from the mid-to-late 50’s. This set will honor his time in the Horace Silver Quintet. • 7:45 – 9:00 – Dianne Reeves o Dianne Reeves is a NEA Jazz Master and one of the most revered jazz vacalists of her generation. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 Young Jazz Lions (Harris Rooftop) • 11–11:30am - ChiArts Jazz Combo • 11:45am–12:15pm - Morgan Park High School Jazz Combo • 12:30–1pm - CYSO Jazz Combo • 1:15–1:55pm - Eric Solorio High School Jazz Ensemble • 2:10–2:50pm - Whitney Young High School Jazz Ensemble • 3:05–3:45pm - Kenwood Academy Jazz Band Von Freeman Pavilion (Chase Promenade South) • 11:30am–12:25pm - Black Diamond o co-led by two young tenor saxophonists • 12:40–1:35pm - Dustin Laurenzi and Natural Language o another group led by a young and exciting tenor saxophonist • 1:50–2:45pm - Matthew Shipp and Ivo Perelman o a saxophone and piano duo playing free improvised music • 3–4pm – Amina Claudine Myers Trio o Ms. Myers is a pianist, organist, vocalist, and composer rooted in the traditions of Gospel and Rhythm and Blues, but also in music of the AACM. Jazz and Heritage Pavilion (Chase Promenade North) • Noon–1pm - Bruce Henry o Chicago-based vocalist • 1:30–2:30pm - The Chuck Webb Band featuring Margaret Murphy o Chuck Webb is an electric and acoustic bassist known for his studio work and his association with such artists as Aretha Franklin and Grover Washington Jr. Margaret Murphy is a Chicago-based vocalist. • 3–4pm – Nolatet o a band from New Orleans playing a modern take on that city’s musical heritage. Park Grill Plaza Stage • 12–2pm - Petra van Nuis • 4–6pm - Isabella Sherwood JaY Pritzker Pavilion • 3:45pm - Second-line Procession led by Mystick Krewe of Laff featuring the Big Shoulders Brass Band (starts at the west side of the Great Lawn) • 4:15–5:05pm - Tribute to Willie Pickens o A beloved pianist in the Chicago jazz community for decades, Willy Pickens could have been internationally-acclaimed but chose to stay in Chicago. This program will honor his life in music. • 5:25–6:10pm - Kenny Barron Quintet o Pianist Kenny Barron has performed with the who’s who of jazz royalty. His latest recording with his quinete received 5/5 stars from DownBeat Magazine • 6:25–7:25pm - Darcy James Argue's Secret Society o DJA’s Secret Society has been one of the most exciting modern jazz ensembles in the country for the last decade. • 7:45–9pm - Ramsey Lewis o An iconic jazz pianist from Chicago SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 NextGenJazz (Harris Rooftop) • 11:15am–12pm - Derek Duleba Quartet • 12:15–1pm - Cesar Martinez’s Cuicatl • 1:15–2pm - Morgan Pirtle+5 • 2:15–3pm - Greg Uhlmann’s Typical Sisters • 3:15-4pm - Jahari Stampley Ensemble Von Freeman Pavilion (Chase Promenade South) • 11:30am–12:25pm - Tribute to John Wright • 12:40–1:35pm - Jaimie Branch's Fly or Die o NTJazz grad from the class of 2000! Fiery trumpeter. • 1:50–2:45pm - Jason Stein Quartet o bass clarinetist from the free jazz scene in Chicago. • 3–4pm - Eric Revis Quartet featuring Ken Vandermark Jazz and Heritage Pavilion (Chase Promenade North) • 12–1pm - Quentin Coaxum Quintet o Trumpeter from Chicago • 1:30–2:30pm - Alejandro Urzagaste's Flow featuring Bill Carrothers • 3–4pm - Fareed Haque and his Funk Brothers o Amazing guitar virtuoso Park Grill Plaza Stage • 12–2pm - Lucas Gillian • 4–6pm - Irvin Pierce JaY Pritzker Pavilion • 3:45pm - Second-line Procession led by Mystick Krewe of Laff featuring the Big Shoulders Brass Band (starts at the west side of the Great Lawn) • 4:15–5:05pm - Matt Ulery’s Loom Large o A critically-acclaimed ensemble based in Chicago led by bassist and composer Matt Ulery. • 5:25–6:10pm - Arturo O'Farrill Sextet o Pianist Artuor O’Farrill is from Cuban jazz royalty. He was the featured performer at the 2017 New Trier Jazz Festival. • 6:25–7:25pm - Charles McPherson-Barry Harris Quartet o Piano and saxophone duo from the Detroit jazz scene, both members of the bebop generation. • 7:45–9pm - Maceo Parker o Iconic saxophonist best known for his long association with James Brown. One of the funkiest musicians alive! .
