Access to the Profession Higher education / university YES (candidates must hold a Qualifying Degree) education A law degree is compulsory NO Steps to becoming a fully-fledged • Professional skills course (PSC) completed prior to lawyer: admission • Assessment of candidate by the Law Society • Evaluation of the candidate and acceptance by a law firm • Completion of an induction period • Examination • Registration with the Law Society of England and Wales Entry routes: Qualifying law degree + LPC (Legal Practice Course) + 2 year training contract Or Non law degree + GDL (full year conversion course)+ LPC + 2 year training contract All candidates have to follow a LPC (Legal Practise Course) + 2 year training contract ( which can be offered by a law firm, a public sector body or company legal department) 1 Country: England and Wales Alternative routes to the profession: YES • Apprenticeship in lieu of a degree • Transfer routes from other professions (legal professions from other countries) It is possible to enter at the LPC stage by the legal executive route (ILEX) which involves part-time study +experience in lieu of an undergraduate degree. HERBERT SMITH FREEHILLS BECOMES FOUNDING SIGNATORY TO THE CHARTER FOR BLACK TALENT IN FINANCE AND THE PROFESSIONS 30 October 2020 | UK Firm news Herbert Smith Freehills has been announced as one of the founding signatories to a first-of-its-kind initiative, developed to increase representation of Black people in senior positions across legal and other professional services companies in the UK. Created by barrister Harry Matovu QC, the Charter commits firms to creating and maintaining an environment where Black talent can be identified, developed and promoted for the benefit of individuals and their organisation. It also commits signatories to support the recruitment of Black employees and their development and progression into senior roles by focusing on the entire executive pipeline. Commenting on Herbert Smith Freehills’ commitment to the Charter, Alison Brown, executive partner, says: "This has been an extraordinary year and one which it has become abundantly clear that action needs to be taken to redress the imbalances that have been allowed to persist in so many business environments. No marketplace can succeed in the long term if it fails to reflect the communities which it serves and the legal sector is no exception. Earlier this year we outlined ten actions for change to highlight our commitment to create a safe, supportive and respectful environment across the firm and the profession. The changed economy of legal knowledge: response through a radical change to the legal trainee career path Dr. Nigel Spencer,1 Dr. Katie Best,2 and Des Woods3 Abstract This paper uses a case study to explore how two changes in circumstances within the UK legal services sector led to innovations in career structure, organisational design and the distribution of knowledge within one particular City of London law firm. These two changes were: (1) changes in client demand for more commercial advisers; and (2) the financial crisis or Credit Crunch. The paper sets out the context for the innovation explaining the historic legal education system with its nearly exclusively technical legal curriculum. The authors then set out the need for change in knowledge distribution, based on external market demands, in order to produce more rounded, commercial and business-focused lawyers, and explain how the firm radically revised its career path to create a step-change in commercial knowledge and simultaneously changed the knowledge distribution in the firm. Background: the historic career model and legal services market which required ‘technical experts’ The legal sector’s work historically centred on delivering expert, technical knowledge-in-practice which its legal teams have gradually built up through their careers (Kritzer, 2002). Clients of leading City legal practices continued to value this technical knowledge, especially that of the senior members of the firm (the law firm Partners), and readily bought in the City firms to solve their legal problems, often in a relatively ‘transactional’ relationship whereby the law firm was hired to execute a particular legal instrument within a broader commercial context (Morgan, 2005). -

The Charter – a Short History
The Charter – a short history The Mindful Business Charter was born out of discussions between the in house legal team at Barclays and two of their panel law firms, Pinsent Masons and Addleshaw Goddard, along the following lines: The people working in their businesses are highly driven professionals; We do pressured, often complex, work which requires high levels of cognitive functioning; We thrive on that hard work and pressure; In amongst that pressure and hard work there is stress, some of which is unnecessary; When we are stressed we work less productively, and it is not good for our health; and If we could remove that unnecessary stress, we would enable people to work more effectively and efficiently, as well as be happier and healthier. They also recognised that the pressure and stress come from multiple sources, often because of unspoken expectations of what the other requires or demands. Too often lawyers will respond to requests for work from a client with an assumption that the client requires the work as quickly as possible, whatever the demands that may make on the individuals involved, and whatever the impact upon their wellbeing, their families and much else besides. The bigger and more important the client, the greater the risk of that happening. The development of IT has contributed to this. As our connectivity has increased, there has been an inexorable drift towards an assumption that simply because we can be contactable and on demand and working 24/7, wherever we may be, that we should be. No-one stopped to think about this, to challenge it, to ask if it was what we wanted, or what we should do, or needed to do or if it was a good idea, we just went with the drift, perhaps fearful of speaking out, perhaps fearful that if we took a stand, the client would find another law firm down the road who was prepared to do whatever was required. -
