4 REGIONAL CHAIRMAN’S LETTER

It has been another busy year in the Yorkshire Region in this “Year of Engineering “, with a large number of visits and lectures completed; our presence at a record number of STEM events across Yorkshire, often in collaboration with other Professional Engineering Institutions such as IET and ICE; many school classroom activities being carried out by our members; our continued engagement with the Yorkshire universities through various events & competitions; the Northern Area hosting a very successful Presidential Visit by Carolyn Griffiths; and another well-attended Annual Dinner in Sheffield, with the President and 4 past-Presidents in attendance. I am also pleased to say that we have three active Area Young Members Panels, with their own diverse programmes of events.

This year has seen considerable concern about the financial management and governance of the Institution from various members and the Regional Committees. As you will be aware, a Special Meeting was held in on the 21st May, the results of which have ultimately led to the resignations of the current President and the CEO, both of whom felt it was in the best interests of the Institution.

Dr Colin Brown, the IMechE’s previous Engineering Director, has been appointed as a temporary CEO and is seen as a popular and experienced safe pair of hands to keep the HQ functioning. An interim President will be elected by the Trustees over this summer and they are also initiating reviews of governance and financial management in the Institution. The Regional Committees are pushing for the IMechE to become a more member-focused and consultative organisation.

The Yorkshire Region is approaching 100 years since the “Leeds Local Branch” became the first “branch” of the London HQ and we remain one of the largest and most active of the UK Regional Committees. We are making plans to celebrate this milestone in 2021.

As shown in this programme listing, our 2018/19 season will continue with this high level of activity and I do hope that you can make it to some of the lectures and visits, and ideally some of the school engagement events as we try to encourage some of the next generation into becoming the much needed engineers of the future.

Finally, I would like to thank our sponsors - AESSEAL, Doncasters Bramah, Elevation Recruitment Group and Withers & Rogers LLP. Their help and support enable us to continue to be one of the few IMechE Regions to produce a Programme Card showcasing our full range of events in this format, which I believe is still very much appreciated by members.

Yours sincerely, Alan Brattan CEng FIMechE, Yorkshire Region Chairman 5 2018/19 EVENT DETAILS
