  • Making of a Hindu Temple: a Case Study of Sri Venkateswara Temple, Bridgewater, New Jersey Indira Govindan Doctoral Candidate, Drew University
Making of a Hindu Temple: A Case Study of Sri Venkateswara Temple, Bridgewater, New Jersey Indira Govindan Doctoral candidate, Drew University The subject of my research is the Sri Venkateswara Temple (also known as the Balaji Mandir) located in Bridgewater, New Jersey. It is a prototypical American Hindu temple in that it is conceptually ecumenical seeking to accomodate the several sectarian tradtions under one roof, a concept not common in the Indian temple traditions. Architecturally built in the south Indian style, the temple houses several deities from the Vishnu, Shiva and the Goddess pantheon . In the "gallery of Gods", the presiding deity , Lord Venkateswara (a form of Vishnu), spatially located at the center towers over all other shrines. The icons themselves though predominantly fashioned in the south Indian style, include a mix of north Indian marble images. The temple rituals are organized in an elaborate fashion-its daily rituals include the recitation of morning invocation (Suprabhatam) and Vishnu Sahasranamam for the main deity, Venkateswara and ritual bathing (abhishekam) for Shiva linga. Weekly abhishekas are performed for other deities with Fridays reserved for the Goddesses. There are also biweekly and monthly abhishekas performed for the moveable icons (utsava murthis). The temple rituals are conducted in either Sanskrit or Tamil. The temple's sacred calendar includes practically all major and minor religious festivals of south India. The overall effect of the multiplicity of rituals and festivals is to create a place that is always busy and teeming with activities. Number of visitors average about three hundred per week. The temple also offers non-religious programs such as language classes, religious discourses and music and dance recitals.

  • Guidelines for Visiting a Hindu Site
Guidelines Suitable dress: Keep in mind that you will be entering someone else's worship space. Therefore, please dress appropriately and modestly (i.e., no shorts, short skirts, tank-tops, midriff baring shirts, or tight fitting clothes). Please be sure to call and verify information before visiting. Temple Etiquette Dress modestly; remove shoes outside door of temple; do not point your feet towards the deity when seated on the ground. If you are close enough to the rituals being performed, you will be offered prasad at the end of the ritual. If your religious tradition dictates that you may not accept this, or you prefer not to for some other reason, it is acceptable to simply indicate this by a hand gesture or verbal comment of this nature. [from Lee Weissman's unpublished "Temple Etiquette"]: "Hindu temples often violate Westerners' expectations about the "solemnity" of sacred places. Compared to the rows of chairs with a stage in the front which characterizes most Christian and Jewish liturgical spaces, the concentric web of open spaces which characterize most Hindu temples may strike us as not quite solemn. These spaces require that people move about from place to place to conduct their worship. Consequently, there is a lot of movement. Along with that movement, there is often plenty of socializing and noise if it is crowded. Worship in Hindu temples is generally non-communal. There are ... guidelines for worship in temples, but in any temple visit there is a substantial amount of improvisation. Which gods to see, when to see them, what to do when you see them, what to offer, all of this depends on the intents and interests of the devotee.

There are 29 slOkams in this SuprabhAtam composed by ANNangarAryA for ThiruvEnkatamudayAn. adiyEN would give the general meaning for the individual slOkams 1 and add brief comments on them. May Lord SrinivAsan bless this Kaimkaryam! THE STRUCTURE OF SRI VENKATESA SUPRABHATAM In the first slOkam, the Lord of ThiruvEnkatam is awakened as Sri Raamachandran (KousalyA SuprajA) and in the second slOkam as Govindhan. The third and the fourth slOkams awaken Sri MahA Lakshmi. From the fifth slOkam onwards, ThriuvEnkata-mudayAn is awakened. In the fifth and the sixth slOkmas, the arrival of sages likes Athri and Gods like Paramasivan to participate in the SuprabhAta darsanam of the Lord of seven hills is described.
