FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: In-Fin Tuan, 651.292.4323 X106 August 15, 2014 Pr@Historytheatre.Com Experience the Unforgettable FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: In-Fin Tuan, 651.292.4323 x106 August 15, 2014 [email protected] History Theatre presents Garrison Keillor’s ‘Radio Man’ First full-length play by America’s foremost storyteller and humorist gives hilarious glimpse into A Prairie Home Companion onstage and off (SAINT PAUL, MN) History Theatre’s 2014-2015 season will include four world premieres, beginning with Garrison Keillor’s first full-length play, Radio Man, opening September 27. With Pearce Bunting (of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire) playing The Host, Radio Man will give audiences a hilarious glimpse of “A Prairie Home Companion” onstage, offstage, and through the eyes of the show’s enigmatic creator. This new play written by Minnesota Public Radio icon Garrison Keillor looks back on 40 years of "A Prairie Home Companion" through a quirky journey into the mind and memories of its curious creator. The "On Air" lights flash and a show begins, but the quixotic host, played by Pearce Bunting (Boardwalk Empire), is distracted by visits from the characters of "A Prairie Home Companion" along with producers, executives, and crew . The lines between on-stage and off-stage, imagination and reality are blurred and the host offers them all this simple advice: "Lighten up." Song and dance is the cure. Cheerfulness is a choice. Sorrow is generic: what truly shines is comedy. “When I first took the job as Artistic Director, said Ron Peluso, “I told Garrison Keillor if you ever want to write something for History Theatre, just let me know.” Nearly twenty years later, the time was ripe – as Mr. Keillor approached his 40th anniversary with A Prairie Home Companion. He expressed interest in writing a play about his 40 years in radio, and we began developing what would become Radio Man. Writing about your own life can be challenging, shares Peluso. “Over the years, I’ve had a number of playwrights tell their story - and many have tried to pass on writing about what they perceived as too personal or irrelevant. It takes a certain amount of courage and wisdom to dig deep and reveal your true self to an audience. This is what I had hoped for with Garrison, and he obliged us as he has created a new play not only about his 40 years in radio, but also about his life away from the mic. Radio Man is a funny, smart, heartfelt and insightful look at the life one of America’s greatest humorists and storytellers.” It is truly a great honor for History Theatre to bring Garrison and his work to our stage. Radio Man will certainly entertain and delight our audiences, and for those who aren’t familiar with Garrison or A Prairie Home Companion, it will be an opportunity to get to know a “Minnesota original.” A Prairie Home Companion started production in 1974. Live every Saturday night from 5-7 p.m. CT, A Prairie Home Companion features comedy sketches, music, and Garrison Keillor’s signature monologue, “The News from Lake Wobegon.” Radio Man will premiere Saturday, September 27, 2014 as part of the 2014-15 season. -continued - 1 PERFORMANCES: OPENS: Saturday, September 27, 2014 CLOSES: Sunday, October 26, 2014 PLAYING: Thurs, Fri, Sat. @ 8 p.m. | Sun. @ 2 p.m. | Thurs. @ 10 a.m. Audio Described and ASL interpreted performance on 10/12/14 at 2:00 p.m. Complete performance schedule is included on page 4 TICKETS: Tier 1 $45 - $31.50; Tier 2 $42 - $29; Tier 3 $37 - $26; Tier 4 $25 Seniors (60+ years old) get $2 off; Students (5 to 18 years old): $15 Discount rates are available for groups of 12 or more. The Host, played by Pearce Bunting (HBO’s Boardwalk Empire), presides over a parade of singing groups, the private eye Guy Noir, the cowboys Dusty and Lefty, and the band of colorful characters of Lake Wobegon. It’s a night of rollicking humor and heartfelt revelations in the first full-length play written by America’s foremost storyteller and humorist. If you thought you knew everything about A Prairie Home Companion's creator, think again -- there's a surprise on every page! • A Prairie Home Companion”: First Broadcast (July 6, 1974) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Chuck Howell (Guest Post)*
“A Prairie Home Companion”: First Broadcast (July 6, 1974) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Chuck Howell (guest post)* Garrison Keillor “Well, it's been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon, Minnesota, my hometown, out on the edge of the prairie.” On July 6, 1974, before a crowd of maybe a dozen people (certainly less than 20), a live radio variety program went on the air from the campus of Macalester College in St. Paul, MN. It was called “A Prairie Home Companion,” a name which at once evoked a sense of place and a time now past--recalling the “Little House on the Prairie” books, the once popular magazine “The Ladies Home Companion” or “The Prairie Farmer,” the oldest agricultural publication in America (founded 1841). The “Prairie Farmer” later bought WLS radio in Chicago from Sears, Roebuck & Co. and gave its name to the powerful clear channel station, which blanketed the middle third of the country from 1928 until its sale in 1959. The creator and host of the program, Garrison Keillor, later confided that he had no nostalgic intent, but took the name from “The Prairie Home Cemetery” in Moorhead, MN. His explanation is both self-effacing and humorous, much like the program he went on to host, with some sabbaticals and detours, for the next 42 years. Origins Gary Edward “Garrison” Keillor was born in Anoka, MN on August 7, 1942 and raised in nearby Brooklyn Park. His family were not (contrary to popular opinion) Lutherans, instead belonging to a strict fundamentalist religious sect known as the Plymouth Brethren.
