Chapter 3: History and Philosophy
3 +LVWRU\DQG3KLORVRSK\ 3.1 This chapter surveys the development of freedom of religion from 200 BC until 1945. This material has not been drawn from the Committee’s inquiry. It is intended to provide a background to the development of the philosophy of religious freedom and the legal protections in place today. Introduction Toleration was attained by the legal guarantee of free belief and the public exercise of that belief. Legal toleration is limited in its scope, somewhat ignoble in some of its sources, but constitutes, none the less, one of the most significant advances that the human race has ever achieved.1 3.2 This Chapter surveys the history and development of the philosophy of freedom of religion. This is not a modern notion, for arguments against intolerance and for religious liberty can be traced back to ancient times. The first known charter of religious toleration was carved in rock over two hundred years before the birth of Christ. Neither have ideas on religious freedom developed in a linear manner: indeed, some countries are further from religious freedom today than they were centuries ago. It is, therefore, necessary to consider the social context in which protagonists of toleration worked in order to understand the significance of their achievements. 3.3 Whilst numerous examples of religious intolerance could be found in each of the periods mentioned below, this chapter concentrates on examples of tolerance and influential individuals and events which contributed in a positive manner to the development of religious freedoms. 1 W K Jordan, The Development of Religious Toleration in England, Vol I, (London, George Allen & Unwin, 1932), p. -

Their work now favors the label, "Early Modem." As the preferred termsugg ests, looking to the Early Modem period, we see that many modem concepts and processes find their beginnings in this critical period of history. For example, this is the period of Francis Bacon (1561-1626), who argued the need for an empirical, inductive approach to science that refuted status quo Aristotelian methods and ushered in use of the modem scientific method. It is also the period of the Protestant Reformation, a series of events that dramatically and indelibly shifted the landscape of the Western religious world as Protestant sects divided themselves from the Roman Catholic church. -

Throughout its history, it has developed from a small community of Syrian refugee into an internationally present hierarchical Church numbering in the millions. Spread across the world, it remains deeply tied to its history and homeland in Lebanon where the Patriarch continues to reside. -

The Blood of the Martyrs: The Attitudes of Pagan Emperors and Crowds Towards Christians, From Nero to Julian Domenico Miletti Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in fulfillment of the requirements for the Master’s degree in Classical Studies Department of Classics and Religious Studies Faculty of Arts and Sciences University of Ottawa © Domenico Miletti, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This MA thesis will discuss the reception of common, non-scholarly polytheists (pagans) to the persecution of Christians from the early empire until the Great Persecution (303-313, 322-324). Though modern scholars have addressed this issue and asserted that there was a change in attitude, many have not developed this into anything more than a passing statement. When chronologically analyzing the Christian acts, passions, letters, and speeches recounting the deaths of martyrs deemed historically authentic, and accounting for the literary and biblical topoi, we can demonstrate that the position of non-Christians changed. The methodology of this thesis will chronologically assess the martyr acts, passions, speeches, and letters which are historically accurate after literary and biblical topoi are addressed. These sources are available in the appendix. Throughout this analysis, we will see two currents. The primary current will seek to discern the change in pagan reception of anti-Christian persecution, while the second current will draw attention to the Roman concept of religio and superstitio, both important in understanding civic religion which upheld the pax deorum and defined loyalty to the Roman order through material sacrifices and closely connected to one's citizenship. Religio commonly denoted proper ritual practices, while superstitio defined irregular forms of worship which may endanger the state. -

Pepperney 2009 Abstract The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how the idea of religious toleration was represented in early modern English polemical prose, poetry, and other literary genres. I argue that religious toleration extends from what is permissible in spiritual practice and belief, to what is permissible in print, and texts on religious toleration encouraged writers to contemplate the status of the discourse to which they contributed. Although the study begins and ends with analysis of two authors whose writings on toleration have received extensive critical attention, this dissertation also applies the latest theoretical framework for understanding religious toleration to writers whose contribution to the literature of toleration has previously been less well documented. Thomas More‘s Utopia (1516) outlines an ideal state with apparently progressive institutions and social practices, including property shared in common, abolition of the monetary system, and religious toleration. Contrary to the view of previous criticism, however, the image of a tolerant society in More‘s Utopia is unlike the modern ideal of toleration as a foundational principal of modern pluralism. Although More also argued against toleration of heresy in his later polemical works, he engaged with the concept of toleration to contemplate the efficacy of the dialogue as a persuasive tool. -

Religious Liberty and Creative Breakthroughs in American Politics: Roger Williams and James Madison NEAL RIEMER Drew University What is the relationship between the idea of religious liberty and creative breakthroughs in American politics? My thesis is that the idea of religious liberty led to the first creative breakthrough in American politics in the theory and practice of Roger Williams, and that the idea played an important part in the second creative breakthrough in American politics in the theory and practice of James Madison; moreover, I contend that future breakthroughs in American politics will continue to draw fruitfully from concepts, problems, and activities in the religious domain. What is meant by the concept of "creative breakthrough" and of "politics"? A Creativebreakthrough in politics refers to a significantly fruitful resolution of a major problem in connection with one or more of the major interrelated tasks of the discipline of political science. -

The Romans struggled with several internal crises as well as constant harassment from foreign enemies. Because of this downturn, several emperors attempted to consolidate more control over several areas, including economics, the military, bureaucracy, and religion. While these episodes in political and social change are regarded among scholars as a watershed moment in history,
