Este periodo formativo se vió enriquecido con la estancia en L’ Università Internazionale dell’Arte di Firenze, en Italia, del 31 de enero al 31 de marzo de 2002, gracias a la concesión de una Ayuda para realizar estancias breves en España o el extranjero. Gracias a esta ayuda se ha tenido la oportunidad de adquirir una visión de la formación de restauradores distinta de la que se conocía hasta ese momento, y por lo tanto permitió incrementar la formación como restauradora y como persona. En 2003 tuve la oportunidad de llevar a cabo parte de la investigación que conduciría al desarrollo de esta tesis, en uno de los centros más relevantes en el campo de la conservación y la restauración europea, el Istituto Centrale per il Restauro de Roma, donde pude conocer de nuevo otro aspecto de la enseñanza de la restauración, lo que me permitió, además de obtener conocimientos muy fructíferos para esta tesis, crecer como docente. Esta estancia se desarrolló del 2 de noviembre al 20 de diciembre de 2003, pero esta vez con financiación propia. Gracias a estas estancias en centros europeos y la colaboración de diferentes expertos en la elaboración de la presente tesis doctoral, puedo optar a la mención de Doctor europeus. Los trabajos de investigación se han desarrollado en el Departamento de Conservación y Restauración de Bienes Culturales de la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, vinculada con el Taller de Análisis e Intervención de Pintura Mural del Instituto de Restauración del Patrimonio de esta misma univesidad. Gracias a ello he participado en múltiples obras de restauración de pintura mural, lo cual ha ayudado en el desarrollo de mayores conocimientos sobre el tema, para aplicarlos a la presente tesis doctoral. Del mismo modo he participado en diversos proyectos de investigación, desarrollo e innovación, y convenios: “Desarrollo de la investigación arquitectónica, pictórica, escultórica, ornamental, y propuesta de intervención para la recuperación Integral de la Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados de Valencia”; “Proyecto de intervención en las cúpulas, tambor y linterna de la Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados de Valencia”; “Ensayos No Destructivos por Ultrasonidos en Restauración y Conservación de Bienes Culturales: Aplicación a la Bóveda de la Iglesia de los Santos Juanes”; “Conservación y Restauración de la Decoración Pictórica Mural de la Cúpula de la Capilla del Santísimo Cristo. Oliva”; 11 Tesis doctoral europea “Restauración de los restos de pintura mural al fresco sitas en la nave central de la iglesia de los Santos Juanes de Valencia” 1. Perciò, questa tesi si sviluppa nel marco della ricerca che ha il suo origine nei Progetti I+D+I che la Commissione Interministeriali di Sciencia e Tecnología (CICYT) ha concesso nel Progetto Nazionale di Ricerca e Sviluppo, all’equipe di ricerca diretto dalla Dottoressa Pilar Roig Picazo, per il restauro della Chiesa di Santos Juanes di Valencia.

This show was what opened up our path abroad via the best possible gate- way, the Salon du Dessin in Paris, the best drawing fair in the world. We exhibited for the first time in 2009 and have kept up the annual appointment with our best works. Thanks to this event, we have met the best specialists in drawing, our col- leagues, and important collectors and museums. At the end of this catalogue, you will find a selection of the ten best drawings that testify to this work, Spanish and Italian works, but also Nordic and French, as a modest tribute to our host country. Juan de Pareja was a mulatto painter and slave who succeeded in forging an independent artistic career in seventeenth-century Spain, at a time when, in theory, only those who were free could practice the art of painting. Pareja was the slave and collaborator of the celebrated painter Diego Velázquez (1599-1660) at the court of Philip IV in Madrid, where he was an exceptional case, as was also the relationship between master and slave.1 Pareja, who was able to read and write, acted as legal witness for Velázquez in documents dating from 1634 to 1653, both in Spain and in Italy, where he went with his master from 1649 to 1651.2 During Velázquez’s second stay in Italy, he immortalized his slave in an extraordinary portrait which he exhibited in the Pantheon in Rome on 19 March 1650,3 six months before he signed the document of manumission of Pareja.

As required by the king’s death, the painter Juan Bautista Mart´ınez del Mazo, Velazquez’s´ son-in-law, proceeded to inventory the royal collection of paintings. In this 1666 inventory, the first written record of a work created in 1656, Mazo described a large painting “portraying” the Infanta Margarita with “her ladies-in-waiting [meninas] and a female dwarf, by the hand of Velazquez.”´ The first substantive description of the painting is in a manuscript treatise on painting, dated 1696, by the Portuguese Felix da Costa: To Diego de Velazquez´ the painter, Philip IV,King of Castile, gave the order of Santiago, which is the chief honor of that realm, as well as the key of the [royal] chamber. His own wit perpetuated this honor in a picture which adorns a room of the palace at Madrid, showing the portrait of the Empress, the daughter of Philip IV, together with his own. Velazquez´ painted himself in a cape bearing the cross of Santiago, with the key [to the chamber] at his belt, and holding a palette of oils and brushes in the act of painting, with his glance upon the Empress, and putting his hand with the brush to the canvas. At his left, and on the other side of the picture, we see the little Princess standing among kneeling ladies-in-waiting who are amusing her.

UPV/EHU Curso 2018/2019 1 RESUMEN Aunque en la ciudad de Granada su obra más reconocida es la Alhambra, en este trabajo nos hemos centrado en una obra barroca. Pretendemos estudiar la intervención de Antonio Palomino en las pinturas de la bóveda del Sagrario de la Cartuja granadina. La Cartuja de Granada acoge algunas de las obras que mejor representan al barroco español, como su sacristía y su capilla del Sagrario, construida por Francisco Hurtado Izquierdo a partir de 1709. En ella se encuentra la obra objeto de nuestro trabajo: las pinturas de la bóveda que llevó a cabo Antonio Palomino, el pintor español más importante del primer cuarto del siglo XVIII. Palomino, nacido en Córdoba, completó la capilla con una serie de cuadros y la decoración al fresco del techo, siendo partícipe del bel-composto que envuelve este espacio. Las pinturas de Palomino, realizadas a principios del siglo XVIII, complementan a las formas arquitectónicas diseñadas por Hurtado Izquierdo, uno de los grandes arquitectos del barroco español, y a las esculturas hechas por José de Mora, Duque de Cornejo y José Risueño. En las pinturas que Palomino realiza en el Sagrario se intuye la influencia de artistas españoles como Juan Carreño o Claudio Coello, pero sobre todo la del italiano Lucas Jordán. Este pintor, que estuvo trabajando en la Corte de Madrid, fue su principal referente y quien lo introduce en la pintura decorativa de techos, ya desarrollada en Italia por los Carracci, Mitelli y Colonna.

In short, Velázquez was as much a politician as an artist, his position in the Spanish court required both responsibilities. In the years 1659-1660 the painter played an especially remarkable role in the affairs of state when he was called upon to make court preparations for the Paz de los Pirineos, a peace accord ending nearly thirty years of war between the two reigning European superpowers, France and Spain.

L u i S R am ó n - L aca A virtual three-dimensional model of Las Meninas is discussed. The model suggests that Diego Velázquez used a large mirror to create his masterpiece. ABSTRACT In his influential essay on Diego Velázquez’s Las Meninas (1656) (The Prado Museum, Madrid, accession number P01174, 318 cm × 276 cm), originally published in 1965, the French philosopher Michel Foucault considered Velázquez’s masterpiece to be “the representation, as it were, of classi- cal representation” [1–3]. According to Svetlana Alpers, the scene represented in Las Meninas has eluded full and satis- factory discussion by art historians, the major study in this respect being Foucault’s essay [4]. Gabriel Shapiro recently argued that “a number of recent essays on Las Meninas refer critically to Foucault’s essay and take it as a relatively immedi- ate account of the painting” [5]. Gasta Iowa State University The influence of Diego Velázquez on the history of art cannot be overstated, but studies to date have not taken note of his impact on Spanish politics during the mid-seventeenth century. In short, Velázquez was as much a politician as an artist, his position in the Spanish court required both responsibilities. In the years 1659-1660 the painter played an especially remarkable role in the affairs of state when he was called upon to make court preparations for the Paz de los Pirineos, a peace accord ending nearly thirty years of war between the two reigning European superpowers, France and Spain. The treaty was contingent upon the royal marriage of the Spanish princess María Teresa, daughter of king Philip IV, to French king Louis XIV (Philip’s nephew). In simple terms, we might say Velázquez’s involvement in the treaty and wedding celebrations appeared only to be artistic: he produced a few paintings, chose tapestries, sculptures, paintings, and furniture for exhibition, and determined the precise placement of other works of art for the treaty negotiations in Madrid, and also for the wedding celebrations near the Spanish border with France. However, in light of the importance European courts placed upon aesthetics and their ability to project certain attitudes, Velázquez’s actions had theoretical and real political consequences for the success of the treaty and marriage. His decisions set the overall tone for political events, and helped shaped their outcome.

It depicted his slave, the painter Juan de Pareja (Antequera, Province of Málaga, c. 1606 - Madrid, 1670).1 This work was highly praised and its reception was extremely successful due to the realistic likeness of the sitter as the art critic and painter Antonio Palomino recorded in his Pictorial Museum and Optical Scale (1724): “[Velázquez] made [the portrait] (one) of Juan de Pareja, his slave and a painter himself, with such likeness and liveliness that when he sent it with Pareja for the criticism of some friends, they stood looking at the painted portrait and the model with admiration and amazement, not knowing which one they should speak to and which was to answer them. Of this portrait (which is half-length, from life) a story is related by Andreas Schmidt, a Flemish painter now at the Spanish court, who was in Rome at the time. In accordance with the custom of decorating the cloister of the Rotunda (where Raphael of Urbino is buried) on Saint Joseph’s day [19 March], with famous paintings, ancient and modern, this portrait was exhibited. It gained such universal applause that in the opinion of all the painters of the different nations everything else seemed like painting but this alone like truth. In view of this Velázquez was received as Roman Academician in the year 1650.”2 1 Velázquez’s Juan de Pareja is in New York, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
