  • An Introductory Guide to Advanced Hockey Stats
SHOT METRICS: AN INTRODUCTORY GUIDE TO ADVANCED HOCKEY STATS by Mike McLaughlin Patrick McLaughlin July 2013 Copyright c Left Wing Lock, Inc. 2013 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT A primary goal of analysis in hockey and fantasy hockey is the ability to use statistics to accurately project the future performance of individual players and teams. Traditional hockey statistics (goals, assists, +/-, etc.) are limited in their ability to achieve this goal, due in large part to their non-repeatability. One alternative approach to hockey analysis would use puck possession as its fundamental metric. That is, if a player or team is dominant, that dominance should be reflected in the amount of time in which they possess the puck. Unfortunately, the NHL does not track nor publish data related to puck possession. In spite of this lack of data, there are methods that can be used to track puck possession. The purpose of this document is to introduce hockey fans (and fantasy hockey managers) to the topic of Shot Metrics. Briefly, Shot Metrics involves the use of NHL shot data to analyze individual players and teams. The shot data is used as a proxy for puck possession. Essentially, teams that are able to shoot the puck more often are doing so because they are more frequently in possession of the puck. It turns out that teams that are able to consistently outshoot their opponents typically end up winning games and performing well in the playoffs [1]. Thus, shot data can play an integral role in the way the game of hockey is analyzed.

Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/jets-doing-their-best-to-forget- 481312533.html Jets doing their best to forget Double-overtime dagger hurt but team happy to be home with split By: Jason Bell The late-night flight home and a restless sleep, video work with coaches and some kibitzing with teammates pretty much summed up the 16 hours that followed the Winnipeg Jets’ most crushing loss of the year. All signs Monday afternoon, however, suggested the torment of a double-overtime defeat had dulled considerably. "Something we talked about (Sunday) night, we’re all disappointed to lose in a game in double overtime. It’s tough, but you have to park it right away, as soon as you get on the plane and come back home here," said defenceman Josh Morrissey, who spoke with reporters at Bell MTS Place. "We’re pretty happy that we’re coming home with a split. Obviously, we’re disappointed (Sunday) night but I think we’re in a pretty good spot. I just feel we can be a little bit better each game. That game, Game 2, was a big improvement from Game 1 as far as we were concerned. If we can continue to do that, we’re happy with the position we’re in." Nashville forward Kevin Fiala put a sudden halt to a 4-4 tie Sunday night with his third goal of the playoffs, lifting the Predators to a dramatic triumph over the visiting Jets. 'It's tough, but you have to park it right away, as soon as you get on the plane and come back home here' — Josh Morrissey The NHL’s premier squads during the regular season are locked up 1-1 in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series.

  • Bubble Or Trouble? Restarting Professional Sports While Weighing
Bryant University Bubble or Trouble? Restarting professional sports while weighing the risks for athletes Bryant University Virtual Summer Research and Innovation Village By: Matt Sidell and Jared Wu 1 Abstract: During an unprecedented time in our society, professional sports are just starting to make their returns despite not having a vaccine or cure for COVID-19. The NBA is playing in their Orlando bubble in the ESPN World Wide of Sports complex to conclude their season in one place. The NHL has one hub city for each conference, Toronto for the eastern and Edmonton for the western. Looking beyond the two leagues, the impact the pandemic has had on society has been substantial, and restarting sports for the entire country during this time may end up being a tall task. With this, we consider whether or not professional sports and specifically, the NBA and NHL should restart their seasons considering the risks. As the NBA and NHL have just begun their respective restarts, this brings a debate on if these seasons will reach the end and determine a winner. Key Words: Bubble, Safety, COVID-19, Testing, Restart, Opt-Out, Revenue 2 Introduction: The start of the COVID led to what seemed like an indefinite end to sports, along with the dilemma of how sports should be reintegrated into the daily U.S. lifestyle. The N.B.A. halted their season abruptly on March 11th, after a positive COVID-19 test on All-Star Center Rudy Gobert. Since then, the N.B.A. has been on hiatus, until they started games on July 30th, under a bubble format.

Wayne Gretzky From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Wayne Douglas Gretzky , OC (/ ˈɡrɛtski/; born January 26, 1961) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and former head coach. He played 20 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for four teams from 1979 to 1999. Wayne Gretzky Nicknamed "The Great One" , he has been called "the greatest hockey player ever" [1] by many sportswriters, players, and Hockey Hall of Fame, 1999 the NHL itself. He is the leading point-scorer in NHL history, with more assists than any other player has points, and is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season – a feat he accomplished four times. In addition, he tallied over 100 points in 16 professional seasons, 14 of them consecutive. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held 40 regular- season records, 15 playoff records, and six All-Star records. He won the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship and performance five times, [2] and he often spoke out against fighting in hockey. [1][3] Born and raised in Brantford, Ontario, Gretzky honed his skills at a backyard rink and regularly played minor hockey at a level far above his peers. [4] Despite his unimpressive stature, strength and speed, Gretzky's intelligence and reading of the game were unrivaled. He was adept at dodging checks from opposing players, and he could consistently anticipate where the puck was going to be and execute the right move at the right time. Gretzky also became known for setting up behind Wayne Gretzky in 2001 his opponent's net, an area that was nicknamed "Gretzky's office".
