Prisen består av Spellemannharpe og et stipend på 100.000,- gitt av Kulturdepartementet. Vinneren skal gi dette videre til en person, en organisasjon eller et miljø som har bidratt til å inspirere og stimulere musikkinteressen til vedkommende. Stipendet går under navnet «Det var her det begynte». Tidligere har prisen blitt utdelt på Music Norway sin sommerfest, men nytt av året er at den vil deles ut sammen med de 26 andre Spellemannprisene i uke 15. Her følger juryens begrunnelse: Girl in red: Artist og låtskriver Marie Ulven Ringheim, bedre kjent som Girl in red, har tatt både Norge og verden med storm. Hun begeistrer, engasjerer og inspirerer både fans, musikkbransje og presse globalt. Hun lot på ingen måte det utfordrende året 2020 sette henne ut av spill, heller tvert imot. Med den imponerende og viktige sosiale medie-kampanjen «Do You Listen To Girl In Red?» skapte hun en global kode for jenter som vil fortelle at de liker jenter. Dette har bidratt til mer åpenhet og samhold langt utover hennes egen fanskare. Begrepet «Do You Listen To Girl In Red» er faktisk å finne i Urban Dictionary og lignende oppslagsverk på nett. At fansen ikke kan få nok av den svært talentfulle indie-pop stjernen, er noe hennes 1,8 millioner følgere på Instagram, utrolige 1,68 millioner abonnenter Youtube og 7 millioner abonnenter på Spotify kan bekrefte.
