ABSTRACT A NEW PURPOSE: RICK WARREN, THE MEGACHURCH MOVEMENT, AND EARLY TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY AMERICAN EVANGELICAL DISCOURSE by Myev Alexandra Rees This thesis is a study of Rick Warren, celebrity pastor and bestselling author of The Purpose Driven Life, and his role in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century American evangelical discourse. This thesis provides a historical, cultural, and theological description of American evangelicalism and of the megachurch movement in order to facilitate an understanding of Warren’s influence on both categories. Finally, this thesis argues that Warren’s influence and leadership are causing a cultural and theological shift within American evangelicalism. Title Mayaness Through Time: Challenges to ethnic identity and culture from the past to modernity . Abstract Some six million people in modern Central America are considered to be “Maya” and thereby descendants of an ethnic group that created one of the great early civilizations of mankind. The present study, in a first section, looks in some detail at how the Maya became a group of its own, slowly separating itself from Mesoamerican neighbors, taking on an ethnic identity, markers and boundaries Attention is paid to what can be considered uniquely Maya and what remained features shared with other groups. This historic section follows the Maya until early colonization. The next section gives an overview of modern Mayaness, activism and Maya claims to preserve and revitalize a supposed heritage, taking it into the 21st century. With the historic section as a mirror and background, the study aims at identifying how Mayaness is maintained through time, how silent testimonies tell us about the use in the past of ethnic and cultural markers. Proofs are given of such elements still alive. The text goes on to discuss the future of Maya ethnic identity and culture, its continuity while changing. Biographies of Participants Five-University Collaboration on East Asia Security Cooperation and Regional Governance Princeton University December 11-12, 2009 Kurt Campbell became the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the U.S. Department of State in June 2009. Previously, he was the CEO and Co-Founder of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) and concurrently served as the director of the Aspen Strategy Group and chairman of the Editorial Board of the Washington Quarterly. He was the founder of StratAsia, a strategic advisory firm, and was the senior vice president, director of the International Security Program, and Henry A. Kissinger Chair in National Security Policy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He taught at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and was assistant director of the Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University. Dr. Campbell has served in several capacities in government, including as deputy assistant secretary of defense for Asia and the Pacific, as a director on the National Security Council Staff, deputy special counselor to the president for NAFTA in the White House, and White House fellow at the Department of the Treasury. For his service, he received the Department of Defense Medals for Distinguished Public Service and for Outstanding Public Service. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy on the Joint Chiefs of Staff and in the Chief of Naval Operations Special Intelligence Unit. Sacred Inheritance: Cultural Resistance and Contemporary Kaqchikel-Maya Spiritual Practices DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Elizabeth Rachel Bell, M.A. Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese The Ohio State University 2012 Dissertation Committee: Professor Maureen Ahern, Advisor Professor Ulises Juan Zevallos Aguilar, Co-Advisor Professor Dorothy Noyes Professor Fernando Unzueta Copyright by Elizabeth Rachel Bell 2012 Abstract The Kaqchikel Maya inhabit the fractured and dissonant society of contemporary Guatemala: increasing religious plurality, economic and ethnic inequality, drug-related violence and the legacy of military violence and discrimination. The Mayas face ongoing lack of recognition and voicelessness in a society that values them only insofar as their culture can be appropriated for a growing tourism industry. The Kaqchikels respond to this environment by using their spirituality to generate legitimacy. Mayan spirituality with its pre-Columbian episteme, when viewed in this social context, becomes a means by which the Kaqchikels articulate their agency. Both Mayas and foreign tourists regard the knowledge communicated through spirituality as one of the great achievements of the ancient Mayas. The contemporary Mayan populations consider this knowledge to be inherited, as they expertly wield its tools in a manner that sometimes, in their assessment, even supersedes the abilities of Western knowledge. This indexical past and relevant present make spirituality a salient practice for the contemporary Kaqchikels to utilize as they seek to redefine the relationship between their group and the state, as well as vis-à- vis foreign influences brought about by increasing tourism. -

Wilhoit1 Abstract This article challenges broadly applied beliefs about the gendered nature of informality and the marginalization of single mothers to argue that many such women in Ayacucho, Peru routinely sought out formal-sector jobs and used these to exert authority over certain local processes of development. I argue that this situation, influenced in part by the male-dominated nature of the lucrative but completely informal coca economy, may also reflect Andean ideologies of maternal authority and the freedom afforded to single, rather than married, women. This article draws on over sixteen months of fieldwork in rural Ayacucho, during which time I observed women’s efforts to diversify and reconfigure their households and analyzed their income strategies in relation to political involvement and kinship networks. -

Pluralizing Ethnography COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL 1 1 Introduction Emergent Anthropologies and Pluricultural Ethnography in Two Postcolonial Nations John M. Watanabe and Edward F. Fischer In October 2000, the School of American Research sponsored an advanced seminar, “Culture Theory and Cross-Cultural Comparison: Maya Culture and History in a Multicultural World,” to assess the contrasting historical circumstances and emerging cultural futures of Maya peoples in Mexico and Guatemala. The seminar brought to- gether five anthropologists working in Mexico (two in the Yucatán peninsula and three in Chiapas), four in highland Guatemala, and a non-Mesoamericanist discussant. Research interests ranged from Maya languages, literatures, and religion to economics, politics, and history, all pursued through long-term fieldwork spanning the past five decades. The title of the seminar reflected the three overlapping interests the conveners had in originally proposing it. Fischer wanted to explore new modes of cultural representation in a global world (Fischer 2001, Fischer and Hendrickson 2002). Critiques of ethnographic writing as overly insular and homogenizing (to say nothing of politically self- serving of imperial and scholarly authority) had challenged how anthropologists write about culture, to the point that many questioned 2 COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL Introduction using the term at all. Did the problem, however, lie with the term or with the continuing need to improve nonessentialist writing about emergent, open-ended, pluralistic cultures in continual
