Starting Fall 2020 we are adding to our course selection the opportunity for students to take new Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses to earn high school credit in both the 7 and 8" grade. • 7 grade students will now be able to earn high school credit in the new CTE course the newly offered "Digital Media". The course "Technology Applications" will no longer be offered at any grade level. • 8" grade students may now also earn high school credit in one of three newly offered CTE courses "Introduction to Aircraft Technology" or "Principles of Transportation Systems" or "Principles of Applied Engineering". This means students can in total complete 2 high school credit courses by the completion of their 8" grade year. In the 6" grade, the existing CTE course "College and Career Readiness" will remain as is and no changes will occur to the course title or student schedule. Research about the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex has been taken into account to provide intentionally designed tracks with these changes. These programs will give new choice options for students to take advantage of industry readiness courses at an earlier grade level and will equip students so they can readily enter the workforce competitively in one of the largest growing job markets of the next 5 years. We believe in the importance of providing new choice programs that provide students with exciting opportunities to become experts within the fields of Diesel and Aviation Technology or Engineering, the chance to lead teams, operate technical equipment, and more. By making this change, we are ensuring that students can continue to take advantage of choice programs at a greater capacity in our various high schools and with better preparation as growing 21 century learners. At the beginning of the 8" grade year, students can select the course that aligns with the high school CTE pathway of their choosing and from completing their 8" grade year, can continue programming at one of the following high schools within the district-The first option is to continue in the Diesel/A viation Technology and Engineering programs at Dubiski Career High School. The second option available is to continue in the Aviation Technology and Engineering programs at Grand Prairie Collegiate Institute. While Grand Prairie ISD prides itself on being a 'district of choice', the school's aforementioned are able to assist with the continuation of these programs if you so choose. This new initiative will ensure students from Young Men's Leadership Academy will have a competitive edge upon graduation because they will be equipped with state-of-the-art methods and resources; thus, making them industry-ready professionals! These pathways are provided so that you may be able to make well-informed decisions about the most appropriate high school, as well as an opportunity to follow student interest if pathway programming in Career and Technical Education is your priority. To be clear, these are simply recommendations. Students are not obligated to these programs or high schools and may continue at the high school of their choosing if different. Included are illustrations of these pathway pipelines and a 3-year plan of course sequences we are adjusting to. We are excited to offer this new benefit to your students. Thank you for your continued support to our school for being an essential part of Young Men's Leadership Academy at Kennedy Middle School. Cordially, ncipal Young Men's Leadership Academy at Kennedy Middle School-Grand Prairie ISD Aviation/Diesel Technology & Engineering (Robotics) Pathway Young Men’s Leadership Academy’s Middle School goal with this change is to now offer students new choice options with pathway programs in Aviation/Diesel Technology and in Engineering with an emphasis on Robotics pathway. The visuals below illustrate the Career Technical Education pathways students will be able to continue in and a 3-year plan. • Students in the Aviation Technology pathway will gain an understanding of general aeronautics. It includes the study of physical mathematics, weight and balance, FAA regulations, common and special tools and measuring devices, fluid lines, hardware, aircraft servicing, and documentation. This includes basic information on the principles, fundamentals and technical procedures in the areas of aircraft, aerospace and aviation professions and the preparation for essential elements in obtaining an FAA certified license. • Students in the Diesel Technology pathway will gain an understanding of how to operate specialized farm, ranch, and agribusiness power equipment. This includes instruction in operating specialized equipment such as terrestrial and airborne crop-spraying equipment; tractors and hauling equipment; planting and harvesting equipment; cutting equipment; power sources and systems for silos, irrigation, pumping, and applications such as dairy, feeding and shearing operations; processing equipment; and applicable electrical, mechanical, and safety principles. • Students in the Engineering (Robotics) pathway will gain an understanding of various types of engineering as well as the underlying mathematics and scientific concepts associated with these disciplines. The engineering disciplines students will explore are: 1) Robotics – physics, electronics, and computer programs; 2) Architecture – CAD, modeling, structural design principles, and physics; 3) Mechanical – power systems, engines, and motors; and 4) Civil – bridges, building/construction, rail systems, escalators, construction design, and military. Students will continue learning in these pathways either through programs at Dubiski Career High School or Grand Prairie Collegiate Institute.
