In the end I am thankful to my family, parents, brothers and sister for being my source of support and inspiration amidst solitude throughout the stay. iii ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: Safety in Fishery Sector of Pakistan – Exploratory Research Degree: MSc Fishing is the prime source of the livelihood for the population living in the coastal areas of Pakistan and a major sector of exportation. In the year 2015-16, the fish product exports in foreign exchange recorded 325 US Million Dollars. This sector provides direct employment to an estimate 400,000 fishers and 600,000 peoples in related industries. Despite the importance of fisheries for Pakistan, the supervision of the activity seems defective particularly in relation to safety at sea. The fleet is made of traditional small size wooden boat which often are below regulatory thresholds. In addition, fishers are not properly trained and educated on shore and familiarized at sea. The equipment on board such sea-going ships is below expectation in terms of Life Saving Appliance, Communication system and Fire-fighting devices. This lack of consideration on design, equipment held onboard including lack of training and familiarization affects safety and productivity. As per FAO/ Pakistan stock assessment report 2015, to establish effective co-management capacity for Pakistan marine fisheries, there is a clear need for stakeholders to build the efforts. This may improve all the shortcomings in the fishing sector. This study explores safety in fishing sector in Pakistan. A questionnaire has been conducted to explore the situation and identify main challenges and areas to improve. Non-registration of fishing boats is vital to ensure an appropriate control over the fishing fleet and support stock management and safety of fishing vessels. ABSTRACT: The marine environment of Pakistan has been described in the context of three main regions : the Indus delta and its creek system, the Karachi coastal region, and the Balochistan coast The creeks, contrary to concerns, do receive adequate discharges of freshwater. On site observations indicate that freshwater continues flowing into them during the lean water periods and dilutes the seawater there. A major factor for the loss of mangrove forests. as well as ecological disturbances in the Indus delta is loss of the silt load resulting in erosion of its mudflats. The ecological disturbance has been aggravated by allowing camels to browse the mangroves. The tree branches and trunks, having been denuded of leaves are felled for firewood. Evidence is presented to show that while indiscriminate removal of its mangrove trees is responsible for the loss oflarge tracts of mangrove forests, overharvesting of fisheries resources has depleted the river of some valuable fishes that were available from the delta area. Municipal and industrial effluents discharged into the Lyari and Malir rivers and responsible for land-based pollution at the Karachi coast and the harbour. The following are the three major areas receiving land-based pollution and whose environmental conditions have been examined in detail: (l) the Manora channel, located on the estuar}r of the Lyari river and serving as the main harbour, has vast areas forming its western and eastern backwaters characterized by mud flats and mangroves.

It is determined the level and the distribution pattern of various heavy metals in the coastal waters significantly higher than the standard values. Pollution created by a number of sources is the major contributing factor in this regard. Amongst all, the deteriorating environment in Pakistani waters warrants immediate corrective actions to control Marine Pollution in order to curtail further destruction by this menace. Many steps at Governmental and private level have been initiated however, improvement is a dream. It is rightly to mention that there is no dearth of legislation on the pollution control but implementation of the same by all the concerned agencies and cooperation by public in true letter and spirit is a dream. The prevailing environment cannot be improved without effective enforcement of existing laws in its true perspective by removing all obstacles and difficulties with creating political will of society.

Summary The Government established the Committee on Sustainable Fisheries (the Committee) in late December 2006 to study the long term directions and goals as well as feasible options and strategy for the sustainable development of the local fisheries industry. The results of the study will be submitted to the Food and Health Bureau for consideration. 2. Following careful consideration of the situations of the international and local fisheries industries, as well as the contributions of the local fisheries industry to Hong Kong’s economy and society, the Committee agrees that the local fisheries industry has changed in tandem with Hong Kong’s economic development. However, the local fisheries industry, as an important local cultural asset with a long history, is sufficiently valuable and has potential for sustainable development. 3. The goals of the sustainable development of the fisheries industry are to enable fishermen and fish farmers to achieve self-reliance, help them maintain their own livelihoods and cope with the changing business operating environment, provide job opportunities to the fisheries community and ensure the supply of fresh and quality fisheries products to Hong Kong people. Meanwhile, our society will benefit from a sustainable fisheries industry, as it will help establish and maintain a marine ecological environment that is abundant in resources and can be passed on to our future generations.

It provides methods for profiling fishing fleets according to the available data and different management needs. Its aim is to provide a practical guide which makes these methods easily accessible, and which demonstrates the principles underlying the different standard techniques for profiling fishing fleets without claiming to eliminate the need for expert statistical analysis of complex multivariate data sets. The methods presented are of specific interest to technical staff in Fisheries Departments and those responsible for the collection and analysis of data on fishery resources and fleets. This work is based on experiences profiling different fishing fleets, notably the Moroccan coastal fishery and the artisanal fishery of Senegal, as well as numerous studies carried out by Ifremer on French fisheries. This study was aimed to measure the water quality of eight different creeks around Port Qasim. Samples were collected and analyzed using standard procedures during February and March, 2009. The parameters including pH, Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids, Salinity, Dissolved Oxygen, Nitrate, Phosphate, Sulphate, Chloride, Calcium, Potassium, Zinc, Iron, Cobalt, Chromium, Manganese and Cadmium were determined. The result shows that Bakran creek and Gharo-Phitti creeks are heavily polluted compared to other creeks. This study recommends that wastes from the industries or sewerage should be treated before being discharge into the creek system.
