A Hit in Seattle, 'First Date' Coming to Broadway - Nytimes.Com
A Hit in Seattle, 'First Date' Coming to Broadway - NYTimes.com MARCH 7, 2013, 1:25 PM A Hit in Seattle, ‘First Date’ Coming to Broadway By ALLAN KOZINN It was probably only a matter of time before the high-tech side of dating – Google background checks and fake emergency cellphone calls – would find its way onto the Broadway stage. The technological aspects of romance will be part of the fabric of “First Date,” a new musical that will open at the Longacre Theater on Aug. 4, with previews starting on July 9. The musical follows a mismatched couple – an investment banker and a fledgling artist – on a blind date, and was first staged in Seattle last year. Its book is by Austin Winsberg, who is best known as a producer and writer for television. His credits include “Gossip Girl,” “Jake in Progress” and “Glory Days,” but he has also directed productions at the Blank Theater Company’s Young Playwrights Festival in Los Angeles. The music and lyrics are by Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary, a young composing partnership whose 2005 “Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story” was written for Disney Cruise Line, and whose latest work, a musical adaptation of the film “Secondhand Lions,” will have its premiere in Seattle in September. “First Date” is being staged by Junkyard Dog Productions, the company that produced “Memphis,” the winner of the Tony Award for best musical in 2010. Bill Berry will direct, and Josh Rhodes is the choreographer. Casting has not been announced. This post has been revised to reflect the following correction: Correction: March 7, 2013 An earlier version of this post misidentified the company that is staging "First Date" on Broadway. -

Warlikowski's “Warsaw Cabaret”
Warlikowski’s “Warsaw Cabaret”: Transmissions from the End of the World The premiere performance of “Warsaw Cabaret” at Nowy Teatr. Krzysztof Warlikowski shows his sense of humour with a play that we thought would be a warning against the brutal new wave. The most famous scene in Bob Fosse’s “Cabaret” starring Liza Minelli? A boy crisply singing an innocent song as others gradually join in and transform it into a show of Nazi strength – “Tomorrow belongs to me.” In the Oscar-winning musical, a couple of decadent Anglo-Saxons watches the rise of Nazism from their vantage point inside night-time lounges and champagne-soaked soirees. Warlikowski’s latest play from Warsaw in 2013 transports us back to Berlin of the 1930s; to a revue cabaret. The spectacular venue is a haven for those yearning to lose themselves in intensity and not think about the threat approaching to the tune of a military march. Could this be a warning against the resurgence of totalitarianism and the end of liberal democracy? The official premiere of “Warsaw Cabaret” is slated for 3 July at the Open’er Music Festival in Gdynia. Next, the show will head to Avignon, to Europe’s foremost theatre festival. But lucky viewers got a chance to see the play during a pre-premiere performance at the new home of Nowy Teatr – a former garbage truck garage in Mokotów transformed into a fascinatingly-raw performance space. Nazism and golden confetti The original 26 May premiere was pushed back because of an injury suffered by actress Magdalena Cielecka, who plays Sally Bowles, a girl who comes to Berlin in search of showbiz success. -

In it I explore institutional archives and the metaphors of the archive as it operates in the academy, while focusing particularly on the way in which queerness may come to be archived. Throughout I use the analytic of performance. This work builds on and extends from crucial work in Queer studies, Performance Studies and Archival Studies. -

World on Fire
Biographical Notes World on Fire Peter Bowker Writer, World on Fire MASTERPIECE fans remember Peter Bowker’s impassioned adaptation of Wuthering Heights from 2009, which captured Emily Brontë’s masterpiece in all its complexity. With World on Fire he has created a plot with even more twists, turns, and memorable characters, centered on the chaotic events at the outset of World War II. Bowker has been an established screenwriter in the U.K since penning scripts for Casualty in the early 1990s. Since then, he has written for many long-running series such as Where the Heart Is and Clocking Off. His original work has included Undercover Heart; Flesh and Blood, for which he won Best Writer at the RTS Awards; Blackpool, which was awarded BANFF Film Festival Best Mini-Series and Global Television Grand Prize; and Occupation, which was awarded Best Drama Serial at the BAFTA Awards, in addition to Best Short-Form Drama at the WGGB Awards and another RTS Best Writer Award. He has since written Eric and Ernie and Marvellous. Both productions have won prestigious awards, including a Best Drama BAFTA for Marvellous, which became the most popular BBC2 single drama of the last 20 years. Most recently he has written an adaptation of John Lanchester’s novel Capital and two series of the acclaimed The A Word.
