Kok 3 October 2018 Word Count: 34.866 1 Summary The rags-to-riches paradigm has played an important role in describing immigrant experience in nineteenth-century America and focuses on the immigrant‟s development from poverty to wealth. Due to a conflation of Irish famine and immigrant historiography, Irish immigrants appeared at the bottom of every list of immigrant development: they were seen as the most impoverished immigrants America has ever welcomed. Women, moreover, have often been overlooked in research. In 1995 bank records, from the Emigrants Industrial Savings Bank became publically available. A large proportion of these bank records were owned by Irish immigrants and a significant percentage of account holders were women. This thesis focuses on Irishwomen who moved to New York during the Great Irish Famine and its immediate aftermath. Records from the EISB show that some of these women were able to save considerable sums of money. By combining the bank records of domestic servants, needle traders and business owners, with analyses of working women in historical novels written by the famine generation and newspaper articles, this interdisciplinary thesis aims to give Irish female immigrants a voice in historical research. This thesis enlarges our knowledge about famine immigration and shows us how Irishwomen can enrich our understanding about female economic activity and women on the nineteenth-century job market. -

A cultural audit is a method of gaining a deeper understanding of priority audiences by understanding the pop culture narratives they consume. The project has two overarching goals. The first is to provide evidence-based insights to the foundation’s Voices for Economic Opportunity grantee cohort, a group of organizations who are designing new narratives of poverty to correct misconceptions and address systemic barriers to mobility. The second is to establish a baseline of existing narratives for longitudinal tracking by Harmony Labs, another foundation grantee. The formative research summarized in this report examines how poverty and wealth are constructed in the pop culture narratives in which media consumers are immersed — specifically scripted TV and film, popular music, and top-selling video games.1 In later stages, the Lear Center will expand this analysis to TV news and unscripted content. -
Movie Review: ‘Creed II’
Movie Review: ‘Creed II’ NEW YORK — Moviegoers under 33 take note: You had yet to be born when “Rocky IV,” the 1985 film that hovers in the background of the sports drama “Creed II” (MGM), was released. While viewers of any age will know what to expect from this latest extension of the durable franchise long before they buy a ticket, the tried and true, against-the-odds formula still works somehow. Early on in this chapter of the saga, Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), with the help of his hard-driving trainer, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), wins the world heavyweight championship. He also proposes to his live-in girlfriend, Bianca (Tessa Thompson), a singer who suffers from hearing loss. But the rise of Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), a rival Adonis feels compelled to take on, sets up an emotionally fraught match since the up-and-comer’s father and coach, Ivan (Dolph Lundgren), is the Russian fighter whose blows killed Adonis’ dad, Apollo, back in the Reagan era. (Rocky subsequently fought and beat Ivan.) Rocky continues to feel remorse over his opponent-turned-ally Apollo’s death and urges Adonis not to accept Viktor’s challenge, a stance that threatens to cause a breach in their close relationship. It’s a conflict Rocky can ill afford since the death of his wife and alienation from his son have left him emotionally isolated. He can still count on the loyal friendship of Apollo’s widow and Adonis’ adoptive mom, Mary Anne (Phylicia Rashad), however. Rogers Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers (ABSTRACT) This thesis demonstrates that Doctor Strange comics incorporate established tropes of the fantastic canon while also incorporating postmodern techniques that modernize the genre. Strange’s debut series, Strange Tales, begins this development of stylistic changes, but it still relies heavily on standard uses of the fantastic. The 2015 series, Doctor Strange, builds on the evolution of the fantastic apparent in its predecessor while evidencing an even stronger presence of the postmodern. Such use of postmodern strategies disrupts the suspension of disbelief on which popular fantasy often relies. To show this disruption and its effects, this thesis examines Strange Tales and Doctor Strange (2015) as they relate to the fantastic cornerstones of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It begins by defining the genre of fantasy and the tenets of postmodernism, then it combines these definitions to explain the new genre of postmodern fantasy, or post-fantasy, which Doctor Strange comics develop. To show how these comics evolve the fantasy genre through applications of postmodernism, this thesis examines their use of otherworldliness and supernaturalism, as well as their characterization and narrative strategies, examining how these facets subvert our expectations of fantasy texts. -

For anyone keeping count, that makes this newest film the eighth in a long series that continues to inspire underdogs everywhere. Do you have a favorite film in the series so far? Have the new Creed films continued the legacy well in your opinion? With there being six Rocky films, how many more Creed stories do you think there could be? What else do you think lies ahead for Adonis Creed? EQUIP Adonis Creed and Rocky Balboa find themselves of different opinions after Adonis, the newly awarded heavyweight champion of the world, is called out and challenged by Viktor Drago, the son of former Russian boxer Ivan Drago. The elder Drago was single-handedly responsible for the death of Adonis’ father and Rocky’s friend Apollo Creed in Rocky IV, and this new challenge stems from decades of bad blood that followed. Adonis feels he must stand up and avenge his father (and satisfy his own pride) by taking Drago up on the match, but Rocky refuses to stand in the corner and watch another Creed die needlessly. Instead, Rocky, losing the only meaningful relationship in his life with Adonis, is left to spend his time at his restaurant and complain at home about a light in front of his house the city won’t fix. -

Kathie Lee Scandal, Deadly Fire Highlight ‘Schmatta’ Story: TV Review by Dave Shiflett Bloomberg October 19, 2009 New York’s Garment District is being buried in a cheap Chinese suit. “Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags ,” a documentary airing tonight on HBO at 9 p.m. New York time, traces the rise and fall of an industry that was once New York City’s biggest employer. Most of those jobs have now gone overseas, many of them to China. Today, the schmatta (Yiddish for “rag”) trade is very ragged indeed. The 90-minute film is fairly lively, considering it’s basically a long obit for the industry, whose fate is told in this statistic: In 1965, 95 percent of American clothing was made in the U.S. Now, only 5 percent is made here. The show begins with a look at the district’s early days as a mostly Italian and Jewish business. Lisa Nussbaum tells the story of distant cousin Sadie Nussbaum, who shared a Lower East Side apartment with 11 people. Conditions were “horrendous,” she says: no heat or running water, plus long tedious days at very low wages. Director Marc Levin illustrates the era with a still photo of children playing beside a horse lying dead in the street. This isn’t the only corpse we see. Triangle Fire Sadie was among 146 people, mostly young women, killed in the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. A photo of victims’ bodies lined up for identification is heart-rending and finds a modern counterpart near the end of the film. -

As its title suggests, this essay focuses initially on the fact that rap is deeply rooted in black English, relating this to Eminem in the context of much information on the language of (Detroit) blacks. This linguistic excur- sion may not endear me to readers who hate grammar (or to impatient fans), but it ultimately helps to understand how Eminem and hip hop managed to adopt each other.
