Malkani, Edward Stewart, Elizabeth Martin, Ella Rosoff, GLOBAL WARMING: OUR PLANET IS Emily Rubenstein, Ethan Robinson, IN HOT WATER Hanna Buczkowski- Levy, Hayden By: Hayden Chaffin Chaffin, Jack Global Warming is a serious problem for some scientists Sandi, Jessica and is something we should all think about even if it is Gates, Khumo scary. Newman, Maeve Zimmer, Maison Global Warming is “the rise of temperatures throughout Metro, Mariam El- the Earth” and scientists say that it is caused by burning too Taguri, McKenzie much fossil fuel and more greenhouse gases being released Suggs, Nela Sahady, Reese into the environment. Fossil fuel is what you call buried Narcisenfeld, materials that are then turned into oil, coal or natural gases Samantha Pepper, or heavy oils. Greenhouse gases are a part of the earth’s Serena Bostic, atmosphere like water vapor, carbon dioxide and methane. Taylor Rosoff, Will These gases cause something called the greenhouse effect. Gawronski, Zoe Ferguson 1 The greenhouse effect is important because it is what keeps the earth’s temperature from getting too cold or too hot like other planets. It is like an invisible wall of protection. Why should you care? Because scientists say that humans are doing a lot that has changed the protection of the earth so it is not balanced anymore. They also say that it is probably too late to stop Global Warming from happening. Humans are burning tons and tons of oil for fuel and gas, and buying bigger cars that release carbon dioxide. All of this is increasing greenhouse gases. The greenhouse effect is causing problems around the globe like the sea levels rising, melting polar caps and warmer temperatures in places like the Arctic. Even though a lot of scientists say that it is too late to stop Global Warming, the government and other organizations are working for a solution like making all people aware of what Global Warming is and how bad it will be for Earth if they do not change. The government created the Environmental Protection Agency years ago, to set up rules to protect the environment from pollution and protect people. They are always working to solve this climate problem by making people follow rules about materials they use to build things and showing them how to save energy. Here are some tips for your family to help solve this problem: you can walk to school or work, sometimes instead of driving, or you can carpool so that there are fewer cars everyday spreading exhaust into the air. Other ideas include changing the lightbulbs in your house with special light bulbs that use less energy and using a little less heat in the winter in your house. Keeping the temperature in your home a little warmer in the summer will help too. Global Warming can be stopped if all of us do our part to save the planet by using less energy and remembering what will happen if we do not all pitch in! College Athletic Costs by Clarke Norman Can you believe that college students have to pay for athletic fees even though they are not athletes? College athletic fees are the highest individual costs, other than tuition, in Maryland and Virginia that the students have to pay. Tuition means a sum of money charged for teaching or instruction by a school, college,or university. Some families might not realize they are paying for the athletic fees. Without fees, universities wouldn’t be able to offer high quality athletic 2 programs to students. School staffs say they don’t list fees on their web because they don’t want parents concerned with small things. On the other hand, I know this sounds like a lot of money, but in this case, I believe the money is used for an important need, athletic expenses. Athletic fees are used for offering athletic programs. These include basketball, baseball, softball, swimming, and the most important, football. The University of Oregon has the highest income from athletics at $196,030,398.00 and expenses of $110,378,432.00, in 2014. To all of us in the newspaper, that is still a lot of money. Athletic fees are outrageous, but they are also a part of the college experience and to many are considered to be really important to most student’s lives. Spotlight on England By Jessie Gates England is an exciting country. Here are some facts about it! • England is the most populated country in the United Kingdom. The other countries that make up the United Kingdom are Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. • The largest lake in England is named Windermere and the highest mountain is called Scafell Pike which is 3,209 feet high. • Football (which we call soccer) is the most popular sport in England, but other sports like cricket and rugby are very popular as well. • England uses different currency (money) than the United States. Their currency is called the pound sterling. • In 2011 the population of England was around 53 million. London is many people’s favorite city in England. I went there last summer and I highly recommend going there. Here are some facts I found out about London. • London is the largest city in Europe. There are about 21 million people living in London. • It rains a lot in London. The annual rainfall is around 23 inches. • The tallest building in London is the Shard which is 310 meters (1,017 feet) tall. • London is the first city to host the Olympics three times, in 1908, 1948 and 2012. 3 • The London underground (subway), also called “the tube” is the oldest railway system in the world! Top Nintendo Video Games of 2015 By Zoe Ferguson One of the first big video games is named Splatoon. In this game, there are two teams and each team has a different color ink. The goal is to cover the whole course in your color. If you splat your ink on a wall, you can climb up that wall. But if you get hit by the other team’s ink, you have to go back to the middle of the course (which is where you started). To stop this from happening, you can go under your color ink to dodge. The next game is called Mario Maker. In this game you can make your own Mario stages and you can play other people's stages. But in order to publicly post your stage, you must beat it. The third and final game is Yoshi’s Woolly World. In this game you are Yoshi and the “bad guys” are Baby Bowser and Kamek. Kamek turns every Yoshi except two into five balls of yarn each. Your goal is to beat Baby Bowser and Kamek so you can save all the Yoshis. Yay! Electronic Recycling By Serena Bostic Electronic Recycling has become a very hard thing to do. It’s not as easy as cardboard recycling. The US wastes about 400 million in recycling electronics and a lot of these electronics are still in working condition. Most of the time it costs more money to recycle electronics than it costs for other items!!! Did you know that according to the Consumer Electronic Association (CEA) research, a single US household spent up to $1,312 on electronics in 2012? This means that much money is wasted when these things are thrown away. The EPA says that in 2007, approximately 26.9 TV’s were thrown out, which is 910,600 tons of trash! Think first before throwing away your electronics. Will It Ever Snow This Winter? by Reese Narcisenfeld Everyone is wondering when it is going to snow. I looked at the weather forecast in The Old Farmer’s Almanac. The Old Farmer’s Almanac is a big book that has a lot of information about what the weather will be today and in the future. 4 The forecast for January 14 through January 31 says it will be rainy and some snow showers. The average temperature will be 27 degrees. This means there will not be that much snow in January. The forecast for February is like January’s forecast. The first 2 weeks will have rainy days with rain turning to snow. In the middle of February there will be some snow flurries. The last 2 weeks will also have days with rain turning into snow. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, there will not be that much snow in Potomac, Maryland this winter. It is so sad that Bullis may not have any snow days this winter. Update: The prediction was not correct. More than two feet of snow fell in Potomac on January 22nd into January 23rd.
