Nancy (Caufield) and James Anderson Jefferson Township, NJ Current club: Reelers Former club: Lakeland Squares How did you start square dancing? Jim: Out in California. Nancy: I was given a pair of square dance shoes from my mother. Several years later when I was looking for something else in my life to do, I remembered those shoes and looked online for the nearest square dance club. Lakeland Squares was giving lessons and I signed up. Square dancing added the joy in my life that was missing. What year did you meet? Sept, 2007 And marry? May 29, 2011 We were married at the First Presbyterian Church of Berkshire Valley. We had pictures taken and a cocktail hour outside at our home. Luckily, it was a perfect day. Later, our two families had dinner at the New Orleans Restaurant. Circumstances of your meeting and dating? Nancy: Lakeland Squares was hosting its fall Barn Dance and I remember Jim walking in the front door. He was so-o-o tall and I remember saying to myself: “I like ‘tall!’” I walked up to him and asked if he would like to dance. He said “yes,” and the rest is history. Jim: Nancy was waiting to introduce herself to me while I was speaking to another member of Lakeland. There was definitely something intriguing about her. I remember thinking she must be an officer of the club. That feeling was confirmed when she seemed to “take me under her wing” for several dances.

Selling daughters: age of marriage, income shocks and the bride price tradition⇤ Lucia Corno† Alessandra Voena ‡ June 11, 2016 Abstract When markets are incomplete, cultural norms may play an important role in shap- ing economic behavior. In this paper, we explore whether income shocks increase the probability of child marriages in societies that engage in bride price payments – transfers from the groom to the bride’s parents at marriage. We develop a simple model in which households are exposed to income volatility and have no access to credit markets. If a daughter marries, the household obtains a bride price and has fewer members to support. In this framework, girls have a higher probability of marrying early when their parents have higher marginal utility of consumption because of adverse income shocks. We test the prediction of the model by exploiting variation in rainfall shocks over a woman’s life cycle, using a survey dataset from rural Tanzania. We ﬁnd that adverse shocks during teenage years increase the probability of early marriages and early fertility among women.

As Long as We Both Shall Love The White Wedding in Postwar America INSTRUCTOR’S GUIDE As Long As We Both Shall Love explains why the American wedding has retained its cultural power, despite the many social, political, and economic changes of decades following World War II. The modern white wedding – an event marked by engagement with the marketplace, recognition of prescribed gender roles and re- sponsibilities, declaration of religious or spiri- tual belonging, and self-conscious embrace of “traditions” such as formal dress, proper vows, and a post-ceremony reception – has survived, and even thrived, Karen Dunak argues, be- cause of couples’ ability to personalize the celebration and exert individual authority over its shape. The wedding’s ability to withstand and even absorb challenges or interpretation has helped the celebration maintain its long-standing ap- peal. Because accepted wedding traditions, such as an exchange of vows before a select- ed authority fi gure, the witness of the celebra- tion by a chosen audience, or the hosting of a post-wedding reception, could be shaped to fi t personal values and visions, celebrants – from sweethearts of the early postwar years to hippies of the 1960s to same-sex couples of the 2000s – maintained those traditions. While couples had long aimed to make their wedding distinctive, as the twentieth century came to a close and the twenty-fi rst century began, adding a unique element to a wedding became an increasingly standard practice. The fact that weddings allowed for experimenta- tion opened doors for both how and by whom weddings might be celebrated.
