An Invitation to a Holy Lent In the Book of Common Prayer (page 269)

Holy Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole ent congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth L in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. And, to make a right beginning One of my favorite parts of the Book of Common Prayer is the invitation to a holy of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lent in the Ash Wednesday service. I love that the Church invites us to a holy Lent. Lord, our maker and redeemer. It is so polite. So Godly. It is how God with works with us, inviting, not demanding, seeking us through constant invitation, which we sometimes take but often ignore.

We are invited to a holy Lent, not just Lent. Holiness is that ineffable quality of Godliness, which, when present in a person or place, makes us feel the real-ness Ash Wednesday Schedule of God. This invitation to a holy Lent is one we would be crazy to pass up. It is what our soul hungers for. The offerings in these pages are intended to make a “soul difference.” They are invitations to spiritual transformation, doorways to holiness.

The Way (Stations) of the Cross Fridays in Lent beginning March 3

You are invited to come to St. Mark’s any time on Fridays to pray the Stations of the Cross in the Chapel. In many traditions, the Fridays of Lent are a time of particular devotion in remembrance of Christ’s crucifixion. We will leave copies of the The Way (Stations) of the Cross in the back of the chapel and we encourage you to come in for a period of quiet devotion and to read/pray the Stations.

The Stations of the Cross arose out of the practice of pilgrims going to Jerusalem for Good Friday to walk in Jesus’ footsteps on the Via Dolorosa (way of the grief), stopping at particular ‘stations’ for prayer until one arrives at the place of his crucifixion and burial. In the Middle Ages, the Dominicans

The Stations of the Cross is a mainstay of the Roman Catholic Church and an important element of Anglo-Catholic Lenten devotional practice.
