COMING OF AGE AT JAZZFEAST A Former Prodigy Jonathan Russell at Returns To Princeton JazzFeast in 2006 onathan Russell began to play the violin at age three and was the slain Wall Street Journal reporter and violinist Daniel Pearl. Jalready performing with trad jazz ensembles in New York City Now 22 and a newly minted college grad, Jonathan returned to clubs by age seven. At nine he played the New Orleans Jazz & Princeton JazzFeast on Sepember 19, this time a leader in his own Heritage Festival and two years later made his first appearance at right, and performed an impressive 10-song set with guitarist Vinny JazzFeast, sitting in with Ed Polcer’s group (inset photo). An Invitation to a Holy Lent An Invitation to a An Invitation to a Holy Lent In the Book of Common Prayer (page 269) Holy Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole ent congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth L in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. And, to make a right beginning One of my favorite parts of the Book of Common Prayer is the invitation to a holy of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lent in the Ash Wednesday service. I love that the Church invites us to a holy Lent. Lord, our maker and redeemer.

If you've been reading the Red Hot & Blues Reviews this past year from our own Marty Gunther, you will have read reviews involving every one of the nominees in one way shape or form. If you are a member of The Blues Foundation, you are eligible to vote. If you are not a member, you can join the Blues Foundation now to help decide the winners. Nominees info begin on page 6. It's February and normally we would be in Memphis celebrating music from around the world at the International Blues Challenge. Much has changed since last years' event, with Covid 19 taking the stage-literally. Actually, taking stages- plural-since many stages around the world have shut their doors due to government mandates and public gatherings. Some iconic stages are now forever silent. But many continue to fight to survive. An NC Club is suing Governor Roy Cooper over his executive orders that they allege discriminate against private clubs. On Dec. 21, Pacific Legal Foundation filed a lawsuit against Cooper on behalf of Crystal and Kenneth Waldron and their business of 18 years, Club 519. The complaint seeks relief from Cooper’s “arbitrary treatment of bars as unconstitutional under the state and federal Constitutions.”The suit is seeking an injunction that would allow for private bars to open under the same rules and safety precautions as other bars across the state are currently operating under.
