One of the nation’s largest and most cutting-edge public media companies, Rocky Mountain PBS, is seeking two leadership volunteers to co-chair, manage and lead the well-established archive project “Station’s Archived Memories” with innovative ideas for the future.

The ideal candidates for the position of Co-Chairs of Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) should have a strong knowledge of current archive methods and a passion for the nonprofit/public media sector. Join our team of volunteers to take this 16-year project and develop a plan to create sound practices of archiving in today’s digital world.

QUALIFICATIONS Ability to manage people, delegate responsibilities and work well in a team environment. Strong data management skills and attention to detail is required.

TYPICAL DUTIES Co-Chairs would manage a team of 25+ volunteers. Volunteering up to 20 hours weekly (for each co-chair), with combination of on- and off-site possible. Working with the station staff, the SAM co- chairs would be responsible for developing and executing processes to archive all materials relating to the organization. Assist with database management and maintenance of FileMaker Pro databases with training provided. Promote SAM by keeping RMPBS staff and volunteers informed of the content, availability, and means of using and researching information contained in the archives.

______Want to Impact Kids? Join the Volunteer Ranks for our Super School News program Join the volunteers for Super School News (www.rmpbs.org/ssn) and make a difference in a child's life. This education-based program is the oldest, continuously running production of Rocky Mountain PBS. For over 30 years, volunteers have made it possible for 5th and 6th graders to produce 2-minute news broadcasts about their schools which appear on the air. This program introduces children to the world of broadcast news and, as a result, some of the Super School News alumni have gone on to careers in journalism and broadcast.

Volunteers will be assigned a school and work with a teacher and student team (1-2 coaching sessions at the school) to design their broadcast. Volunteer training is provided. In addition, volunteers will assist with assembling information (1 morning in August and December), orientation day (1 morning in September and January) and will attend the taping session at the Denver station.

We hope you will help sustain this legacy program. If you are interested in volunteering, please email [email protected]. ______Tour Guides Have the Most Fun! (Denver) Do you have a few hours a month? (Most tours are scheduled during the day but there are some occasional evenings too!) Join the fun of taking small groups around the Denver station and informing folks of all ages about the wonders of Rocky Mountain PBS. It's easy – we have tour scripts and we train you. Generally, our tours last approximately an hour. You don't have to be an expert. Just bring your smile and laughter with you. Tour guides are some of the best goodwill ambassadors that we have.

Volunteer News On-Demand PBS/RMPBS Programming: Fabulous New Membership Benefit ($5/month OR $60/year) Passport is an exciting new member benefit that gives members extended access to an on-demand library of PBS and local RMPBS programming. Passport offers a library of content for station members after it has expired from its free window. But don’t worry! All programming that is currently free to watch will stay that way. Passport is simply an added bonus for station members.

Why has Passport been developed? Our audience has shifted to a “TV Everywhere” mindset. People expect to watch what they want, when and where they want. For public television to remain relevant, we have to be where the audience is watching.

How can members access it? Currently eligible members will receive an email with instructions on how to sign up. Anyone else can visit www.rmpbs.org/passport so they can become a member at the eligible level and set up their Passport access. RMPBS will launch Passport on March 31. Passport content can be viewed on the RMPBS website, the PBS website, on the PBS Video app for iOS and Android, and Apple TV. Other streaming services like Roku and Chromecast may have Passport capability in the future.

Questions? Ask Claire Lanier at [email protected] or visitwww.help.pbs.org/support/home.

______Meet the Staff! We are excited to introduce to all our volunteers some very special staff members at our Denver and Grand Junction offices!

Denver Aaliah Hartley

How did you get started at RMPBS? In the summer of 2014, I was a production assistant and a camera operator on chef-driven series, and that was a series that aired on PBS. I actually found out that it was on PBS after the fact. I loved it and I just wanted to be doing more work in production – I was in a completely different field, in veterinary medicine. So I started thinking of places I could intern as a production intern and emailed Julie Speer, and after about a month of back-and-forth, I came in for an interview and she hired me. I was a production intern with her for COEX and Standing in the Gap, and in February my contract ended as a production assistant for Standing in the Gap, and then a position opened up at the front desk!

What’s your favorite program? Standing in the Gap, as well as Arts District and Colorado Experience.

What’s your favorite part of working here? Just being with everyone here. Everyone is really friendly and it’s the business that I eventually want to get into, producing and creating my own documentaries. And the fact that I keep getting free tickets and helping out with special events. What do you do outside of work? I love to exercise. I’ve been doing Kung Fu on and off for 5 years. Just being with my friends, going to the park, going to events, going dancing. I’m always on the DPAC calendar looking up shows and plays, just anything Denver has to offer really. Other than that, I’m working toward my goal of going back to school and being behind a camera.

Favorite baked good? Samosas with beef curry, or empanadas.

Grand Junction Alex Forsett

When he’s not skiing, river rafting or hiking fourteeners, Alex Forsett is working hard representing Rocky Mountain PBS as our Western Slope Coordinator at KRMJ! Alex attended Colorado Mesa University as a business student, co-founding their ski and snowboard club and later becoming the Vice President of Student Government. Alex is a curious individual that loves to make connections and puts his heart into whatever he does, whether it be mountaineering or planning events like Kids Fun Fest and Indie Lens Pop-up. He works alongside Catherine Melorango, in corporate underwriting, major giving, community engagement and volunteer coordination. He believes Rocky Mountain PBS is an organization that is honest, trustworthy and has integrity - all of which reflects his own personal beliefs. Alex began working at KRMJ in the Spring of 2015. Welcome Alex!

Catherine Melorango

Catherine’s love for Rocky Mountain PBS began as a child. She and her siblings grew up watching shows like Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, Reading Rainbow and Arthur. Her enthusiasm for learning and reading partly stemmed from programs like these. She loves to share her passion of enriching the educational landscape of Western Colorado, as our Western Slope Coordinator at KRMJ! Graduating from Colorado Mesa University with a major in history, Catherine tutored fellow students, was president of Phi Alpha Theta (the National History Honor Society), and served as a Senator in the Associated Student Government. While she oversees many departments at KRMJ, Catherine’s favorite part about working with us is meeting the donors and volunteers. She enjoys hearing their stories of how RMPBS has impacted them personally. Catherine loves spending time with family and friends, she also enjoys hiking, snowboarding and trail running. If she’s not doing any of that, expect her to be reading! Catherine came on board with the RMPBS team in the summer of 2015. Welcome Catherine! ______Tidbits of History from the Rocky Mountain PBS Archives By Laura Sampson – Founder, Station’s Archived Memories (SAM)

Can you even imagine working without the tools of either email or voicemail? They’ve both become integral parts of everyone’s workday that we take for granted.

On April 21, 1995, the Channel Six General Manager, James Morgese, announced through a Channel Six Memorandum that the station was introducing the advent of E-mail and Voice Mail to the Channel Six internal operations.

The memorandum simply stated, “The station has gained a tremendously useful tool in order to increase productivity and decrease cost.”

Thank goodness we now take electronic mail transmission for granted!! It has indeed increased productivity, right?

Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) The SAM Project serves the past, present, and future of Rocky Mountain PBS by assuring that the history of the station and its importance to the Colorado community will survive for generations to come. Since 2000, Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) is a volunteer-driven project preserving the history of Rocky Mountain PBS. If you would like to know more about the station’s history and how you can volunteer or donate items the archives, please visitwww.RMPBS.org/SAM, contact the SAM office at 303-620-5734 or [email protected]. Volunteer Appreciation - Thank You for Your Support! Thanks to Volunteers from KRMJ (Western Colorado) From Alex Forsett

On March 10, first of four ‘Science in Action’ nights was held at the Math & Science Center in Grand Junction. Thanks go to the volunteers and to the Center for making this a spectacular event!

We had 429 attendees! This was the largest turnout for any science night EVER! The wolves were a big hit, among other things like cockroach races, extracting Strawberry DNA, and a hands-on demonstration about worms! The cutest thing was these wolves that weigh 140 lbs. licking the faces of little girls; somewhat scary but absolutely adorable!

Science in Action is a four-part series of events all relating to STEM education: Taking a Better Look: May 19th Building a Sustainable World: July 21st Magnifying Our Impact: October 20th

With unique programs and experiments provided by the Math & Science Center ‘CMU Fellows’, Science in Action nights look to empower young children to get creative and help change the world! Science in Action nights make science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) applicable. It takes what children are learning in the classroom into context with local professionals and unique experiments.

______Thanks to Volunteers from KRMA (Denver/Front Range) From Nathalia Velez Ryan Photos by Alan Lunn

Thanks to Sharon Schonhaut for lending a helping hand! A big thank you to Sharon Schonhaut for always making herself available to help on projects while she’s covering the front desk. She has been a big help to the executive office by creating meeting packets. On top of that, Sharon always greets staff and visitors with a smile, and is an absolute pleasure to talk to! Thank you, Sharon!

Thanks go to the wonderful volunteers who assisted us with the Spark! event at the suites in Coors Field on the evening of March 22nd. This very special event was a collaborative effort with Colorado State University, Inside Energy and Rocky Mountain PBS and focused on elements of building a sustainable and innovative community. Approximately 180 invited guests participated in dialogues and networking.

Thanks go to the volunteer table facilitators including Kerri and Kevin Percival. And thanks go toCathy Buhler, Marge Romberger, Judi Martine, Sharon Schonhaut, Maryalyce Allery and Tracey Hughes and the wonderful group of volunteers from the Single Volunteers of Greater Denver. They were gracious and welcoming hosts who ran a complex registration and table seating process. The photos of the evening are provided by volunteer Alan Lunn who drove up from Colorado Springs to artistically record the event. Thank you Alan! The evening was a success that was ensured by the work of our volunteers!

______Thanks to Volunteers from KUVO (Denver) Congratulations to KUVO on a successful Winter Pledge Drive and a big THANK YOU to all of our wonderful staff and volunteers for all of the hard work they put into making this drive such a success!

KUVO exceeded our overall goal of $107K. The sustainer rate settled at 36% of all gifts thanks to the combined promotion of sustained giving by our on-air hosts and support from our dedicated phone bank volunteers. The KUVO app donation form was used several times during this drive, bringing in a little under $1,000. Finally, and to end on a fun note, KUVO received gifts from as far away as Japan, Canada, and 22 other states – emphasizing the importance and reach of the work that we do every day.

______Volunteer Reminder Volunteers: Please note that if you sign in on the computer but don't sign out, the computer only gives you credit for 3 hours. Not only do you cheat yourselves out of time, but the station also. Please send an e-mail to [email protected] if you need to make a correction to your hours. In the email, include the date, time, and job assignment and we will make the adjustment. Thank you! ______
