Why Colin Firth Should NOT Win the Oscar for Best Actor Submitted By: Oxbow Thursday, 17 February 2011 Why Colin Firth should NOT win the Oscar for Best Actor Submitted by: Oxbow Thursday, 17 February 2011 With the Oscars just around the corner it seems almost certain that Colin Firth will win the Best Actor category. Brian Timoney, the UK’s leading method acting coach has a controversial view on the matter. He firmly believes that top performances are being overlooked because they appear in less conventional films. “It’s about time the Oscars stopped being so political and more about the quality of acting. Javiar Bardem’s performance in Biutiful is far superior to Colin Firth’s but it’s in Spanish, which will limit its US appeal. Also the fact that Paul Giamatti has not been nominated at all for his performance in Barney’s Version is quite frankly insane,” comments Timoney. “Because a film is about the British monarchy doesn’t mean that all the performances should automatically become Oscar winners. The winners should go to the best performances regardless of the film type, but clearly that isn’t the case.” Brian Timoney has worked in the acting industry for over 20 years and in every major acting medium conceivable, including TV, Film, Radio and Theatre. He has worked with leading UK film directors Ken Loach and Danny Boyle and has appeared on the BBC2 programme ‘Murder Most Famous‘ teaching TV Actors; Sherrie Hewson (Coronation Street/ Emmerdale) and Angela Griffin (Coronation Street/ Holby City) Method Acting techniques. As a Method Acting coach Brian runs acting ‘Boot Camps’ in London and Los Angeles for seasoned actors as well as those who have never acted before. He is also a film critic for various media to include Moviescope. To arrange an interview with Brian Timoney please contact Karen Morton at Oxbow Media – 01243 788878 or e-mail at [email protected]. Notes to editors and presenter/ producers: Further information about Brian is available at www.briantimoneyacting.co.uk. Potential interview angles:- 1) He is able to critique the performances of Oscar nominated actors/actresses 2) Can justify his reasons as to why Colin Firth should not win the Oscar for best actor 3) Runs a successful actors studio in London providing 'Method Acting Boot Camps' and one year comprehensive actor training and career launch programmes. 4)Can talk about how some of the Oscar nominated stars have used Method Acting techniques and what is involved. 5)Can comment on what star qualities are needed to be a success and potential British talent he predicts to be Oscar winners in the future. 6)Images available upon request. Amanda Holden Amanda Holden plays Mia Bevan façade to cover her own emotional turmoil.“The reaction to my character turned out to be nicer than I thought,” says the Mountview Theatre school graduate.“People felt so sorry for her in the end. I so enjoyed playing someone who was on the surface a real cow, but underneath was lonely, unhappy and just plain desperate.” Joining the cast is glamorous actress Cherie Lunghi as Zinnia Raggitt, Mia’s mother.“Zinnia turns up out of the blue – she’s a pain in the neck and an embarrassment,” says Holden.“Mia doesn’t want to be seen dead with her because she’s an ex-porn star from LA. Mia’s quite a snob and doesn’t want anyone to know, either, so we’ve got all that tension with a bit of comedy thrown in, which is great.” The popular actress, whose own marriage to comedian Les Dennis ended last December after seven years, talks with affection about her friendship with on-screen rival Sarah Parish.“Sarah and I have fun every day,” says Holden with fondness.“I think we’re very similar to each other. We both enjoy our lives and are strikingly confident women. We’ve also got a lot of front, yet we’re both quite vulnerable. She gets me into trouble all the time, particularly on set when she grasses me up and blames me for talking or laughing. No husband, no home, no friends and no salon – Mia Bevan proves you can’t keep a good woman “We’ve also had some great nights out and a couple down, so Allie Henshall had better watch out! of fantastic holidays together. The best holiday has to be when we spent time together with some It’s scissors at dawn, as the conniving Mia Bevan, friends in Tuscany a couple of years ago,” says abandoned by her husband Finn in favour of rival Holden, who recently spent a week in sun-kissed salon-owner Allie Henshall, sets her sights on Barbados with Parish.“The best night out has got winning the “war on love”.

I love the whole process, the collaboration, the excitement of playing a key role in the building and definition of a character. Everything starts with the script, and it’s important to immerse yourself completely into the story. For me, this helps to create pictures in my mind of the characters and they continue to evolve from there. No one works in a vacuum and collaboration is key. The director and producer must be happy and the actors, that’s a given, but the pictures in my mind are the starting point. Of course, unless you have unlimited time and a budget to source fabrics and make everything there are going to be compromises, so my mental images remain fluid.
