Martyrology An Anglican Martyrology - for the British Isles 1 of 160 Martyrology Introduction The base text is the martyrology compiled by Fr. Hugh Feiss, OSB. Copyright © 2008 by the Monastery of the Ascension, Jerome, ID 83338 and available online at the website of the Monastery of Christ in the Desert. The calendars of each of the three Anglican churches of the British isles contain varied group commemorations, I suggest these entries are read only in the province where they are observed and have indicated that by the use of italics and brackets. However, people, particularly in the Church of England, are woefully ignorant of the history of the other Anglican churches of our islands and it would be good if all entries for the islands are used in each province. The Roman dates are also indicated where these vary from Anglican ones but not all those on the Roman Calendar have an entry. The introductions to the saints and celebrations in the Anglican calendars in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in Exciting Holiness, ed. Brother Tristam SSF, The Canterbury Press, 1997, have been added where a saint did not already appear in the martyrology. These have been adapted to indicate the place and date of death at the beginning, as is traditional at the reading of the martyrology. For the place of death I have generally relied on Wikipedia. For Irish, Welsh and Scottish celebrations not appearing in Exciting Holiness I have used the latest edition of Celebrating the Saints, Canterbury Press, 2004. These entries are generally longer than appear in martyrologies and probably need editing down even more than I have done if they are to be read liturgically. -

List of Materials in the St. John the Evangelist Library The focus of the library is specifically Catholic materials, such as Catechisms, apologetics, Church history, biographies and so forth. Some fictional works will be included, largely the sort that is not readily available in most public libraries or bookstores. At the moment, children's and adults' books are all filed on the shelves together. Children's books are labeled "(children)" in the list below. (The one exception is the collection of very thin St. Joseph books; they are all gathered together at the end of the book section of the shelves regardless of their call numbers because they are so thin they would be lost among the other books). If and when time permits, short descriptions of each item will be added to the list. As items are added to the library they will also be added to the list. Books: 111 MIR Miravalle. The Epistolary Soul-Friendship Between Elisabeth Leseur and Soeur Marie Goby1

RUFFING THE EPISTOLARY SOUL-FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN ELISABETH LESEUR AND SOEUR MARIE GOBY1 SUMMARY — Madame Elisabeth Leseur and Soeur Marie Goby were drawn together into an epistolary spiritual friendship from 1910-1914, initially through their love for the poor, discovering in one another a depth of spirituality and a shared love for God that they expressed in their correspondence. This married Parisian woman and this nursing sister achieved a satisfying and mutually supportive relationship based on their love for God and their distinct yet complementary vocations ending dif- ferent forms of spiritual and emotional isolation in their lives. They became true friends and sisters to one another primarily through their correspondence. A contemporary of Therese of Lisieux and Charles de Foucauld, Elisabeth Leseur (1866-1914), a French married woman and mystic, is a compelling model of lay holiness. Having undergone a spiritual conversion in her early thirties, several years into her marriage to the journalist, diplomat, and unbelieving Felix, she took for granted that she was to live this new life with God precisely in her mar- riage and the secular social milieu within which she heard and heeded this call. Like Therese of Lisieux whose sanctity was already being promoted shortly before Elisabeth’s death from generalized cancer at the age of 48, Elisabeth embraced a path of hidden union with God while radiating to those around her a loving presence.
