Shared Emotions
Shared emotions Mikko Salmela* Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, University of Helsinki Helsinki, Finland Abstract Existing scientific concepts of group or shared or collective emotion fail to appreciate several elements of collectivity in such emotions. Moreover, the idea of shared emotions is threatened by the individualism of emotions that comes in three forms: ontological, epistemological, and physical. The problem is whether or not we can provide a plausible account of “straightforwardly shared” emotions without compromising our intuitions about the individualism of emotions. I discuss two philosophical accounts of shared emotions that explain the collectivity of emotions in terms of their intentional structure: Margaret Gilbert’s plural subject account, and Hans Bernhard Schmid’s phenomenological account. I argue that Gilbert’s view fails because it relegates affective experience into a contingent role in emotions and because a joint commitment to feel amounts to the creation of a feeling rule rather than to an emotion. The problems with Schmid’s view are twofold: first, a phenomenological fusion of feelings is not necessary for shared emotions, and second, Schmid is not sensitive enough to different forms of shared concerns. I then outline my own typology that distinguishes between weakly, moderately, and strongly shared emotions on the basis of the participants’ shared concerns of different degree of collectivity on the one hand and the synchronization of their emotional responses on the other hand. All kind of shared emotions in my typology are consistent with the individualism of emotions, while the question about “straightforward sharing” is argued to be of secondary importance. 1 Introduction: The Ambivalence of Executive Power o understand the modern doctrine of executive power, we Tneed to know, at least approximately, what executive power is. It might at first seem best to go directly to the thing and to ignore opinions about it. For executive power is universally agreed to be a modern necessity: why, then, should it be pre sented as a modern doctrine? No modern state is considered a going concern unless it is equipped with a strong executive, and every state without one is held to be courting disaster, and re garded with pity and contempt by those more fortunate. Nor can the necessity of executive power be dismissed as an unconscious assumption which, being universal, goes unchal lenged. It is challenged, but never successfully. Even though the assumption regarding the necessity of executive power is univer sal, there are always some and sometimes many living under free governments who grumble about strong executive actions they find distasteful. They deplore and oppose them as the practices of tyranny, calling them by one of the many contemporary equiv alents for that term which our prudery requires and our experi ence makes very familiar. Yet the protestations subside soon enough as if in recognition of necessity, unless indeed the tune is changed and a clamor begins for strong executive actions which the formerly disapproving now find beneficial. The necessity of a strong executive has, therefore, been tested by those to whom it has not been obvious. Those who speak against it either fall silent or contradict themselves. FREYERMUTH 2010 Abstract Nina Simone was a prominent jazz musician of the late 1950s and 60s. Beyond her fame as a jazz musician, Nina Simone reached even greater status as a civil rights activist. Her music spoke to the hearts of hundreds of thousands in the black community who were struggling to rise above their status as a second-class citizen. Simone’s powerful anthems were a reminder that change was going to come. Nina Simone’s musical interpretation and approach was very unique because of her background as a classical pianist. Nina’s untrained vocal chops were a perfect blend of rough growl and smooth straight-tone, which provided an unquestionable feeling of heartache to the songs in her repertoire. Simone also had a knack for word painting, and the emotional climax in her songs is absolutely stunning. Nina Simone did not have a typical jazz style. Critics often described her as a “jazz-and-something-else-singer.” She moved effortlessly through genres, including gospel, blues, jazz, folk, classical, and even European classical. Probably her biggest mark, however, was on the genre of protest songs. Simone was one of the most outspoken and influential musicians throughout the civil rights movement. Her music spoke to the hundreds of thousands of African American men and women fighting for their rights during the 1960s. -

“September”—Earth Wind & Fire (1978) Added to the National Registry: 2018 Essay by Rickey Vincent (guest post)* “Do you remember, the 21st night of September…?” those were the opening lyrics to one of the biggest hits of 1978, and still one of the most entertaining pop songs over the decades. It is a song about memory, memories that have happened, and memories yet to come. A contagious joy emanates from the song, with lyrics that tease with importance, yet captivate with a repeating “ba-de-ya” refrain that is as memorable as any lyrical phrase. The song is a staple of movie soundtracks (such as “Ted 2,” “Barbershop--The Next Cut,” and “Night at the Museum”), commercial jingles, and family gatherings everywhere. With music providing tickles of percussion, soaring yet comforting horn lines, and the breathtaking harmonies, “September” is one of Earth Wind & Fires’ most catchy sing- along favorites. The lyrics spoke of dancing under the stars, and of celebrating moments in our lives. The words captured ideas that seemed so meaningful, yet really were not. The 21st night of September? What date was that? Was it someone’s birthday? How could a song tug at one’s memories, and yet refer to so little? Co-writer Allee Willis has said the date was used simply because it “sounded right when sung.” The irony was that Earth Wind & Fire had had a run of some of the most thought- provoking and inspiring messages in their catalogue of hit songs, from “Keep Your Head To the Sky” to “Shining Star” and “That’s the Way of the World,” there was an expectation of something deeper underpinning the uplifting experience. -

This systematic review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of chronic feelings of emptiness in BPD, identify key findings, and clarify differences between chronic feelings of emptiness and related constructs like depression, hopelessness, and loneliness. METHOD: A PRISMA guided systematic search of the literature identified empirical studies with a focus on BPD or BPD symptoms that discussed chronic feelings of emptiness or a related construct. -

These group categorization decisions have been shown to be extremely important to understanding group behavior. Yet, despite their prevalence and importance, we know very little about the attributes that shape these categorization decisions. To address this issue, we took inspiration from ensemble coding research and developed a task designed to reveal the influence of the mean and variance of group members’ emotions on participants’ group categorization. In Study 1, we verified that group categorization decreases when the group’s mean emotion is different from the participant’s own emotional response. In Study 2, we established that people identify a group’s mean emotion more accurately when its variance is low rather than high. In Studies 3 and 4, we showed that participants were more likely to self-categorize as members of groups with low emotional variance, even if their own emotions fell outside of the range of group emotions they saw, and that this preference is seen for judgements of both positive and negative group emotions. -

Finally, my husband Hugh for his continued patronage of the Arts and for his pithy and witty remarks on the content and progress of this thesis. 3 Abstract The poet we call Homer stands at the intersection of a long oral tradition and the emergence of literacy. The poems associated with his name have exercised a continuing appeal, across time; and yet they can also be unsettling, challenging our ideas of Ancient Greek values and expectations. This has had an impact on the reception of the poems from antiquity to the present day. I have argued in this thesis that, in the cases I have studied, Lorna Hardwick’s idea of ‘faultlines’ in Homeric epic can be adapted to examine the powerful, often contradictory, emotions portrayed in the Iliad and the Odyssey: namely personal and place attachment, grief, and the anger that can lead to acts of retribution or to acts of mercy that rely on the emotion of pity. -
