Shared Emotions
Shared emotions Mikko Salmela* Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, University of Helsinki Helsinki, Finland Abstract Existing scientific concepts of group or shared or collective emotion fail to appreciate several elements of collectivity in such emotions. Moreover, the idea of shared emotions is threatened by the individualism of emotions that comes in three forms: ontological, epistemological, and physical. The problem is whether or not we can provide a plausible account of “straightforwardly shared” emotions without compromising our intuitions about the individualism of emotions. I discuss two philosophical accounts of shared emotions that explain the collectivity of emotions in terms of their intentional structure: Margaret Gilbert’s plural subject account, and Hans Bernhard Schmid’s phenomenological account. I argue that Gilbert’s view fails because it relegates affective experience into a contingent role in emotions and because a joint commitment to feel amounts to the creation of a feeling rule rather than to an emotion. The problems with Schmid’s view are twofold: first, a phenomenological fusion of feelings is not necessary for shared emotions, and second, Schmid is not sensitive enough to different forms of shared concerns. I then outline my own typology that distinguishes between weakly, moderately, and strongly shared emotions on the basis of the participants’ shared concerns of different degree of collectivity on the one hand and the synchronization of their emotional responses on the other hand. All kind of shared emotions in my typology are consistent with the individualism of emotions, while the question about “straightforward sharing” is argued to be of secondary importance. Classics / WAGS 23: Second Essay Responses Grading: I replaced names with a two-letter code (A or B followed by another letter) so that I could read the essays anonymously. I grouped essays by levels of success and cross-read those groups to check that the rankings were consistent. Comments on the assignment: Writers found all manner of things to focus on: Night, crying, hospitality, the return of princes from the dead (Hector, Odysseus), and the exchange of bodies (Hector, Penelope). Here are four interesting and quite different responses: Essay #1: Substitution I Am That I Am: The Nature of Identity in the Iliad and the Odyssey The last book of the Iliad, and the penultimate book of the Odyssey, both deal with the issue of substitution; specifically, of accepting a substitute for a lost loved one. Priam and Achilles become substitutes for each others' absent father and dead son. In contrast, Odysseus's journey is fraught with instances of him refusing to take a substitute for Penelope, and in the end Penelope makes the ultimate verification that Odysseus is not one of the many substitutes that she has been offered over the years. In their contrasting depictions of substitution, the endings of the Iliad and the Odyssey offer insights into each epic's depiction of identity in general. Questions of identity are in the foreground throughout much of the Iliad; one need only try to unravel the symbolism and consequences of Patroclus’ donning Achilles' armor to see how this is so. In the interaction between Achilles and Priam, however, they are particularly poignant. -

Imagined future states are a key fea- ture of the L2 self-system proposed by Dƅrnyei, and emotion may be the key to the motivational quality of the imagined future self. In particular, this pa- per focuses on positive anticipated and anticipatory emotions related to language learning. It is argued that, in general, positive emotion has a dif- ferent function from negative emotion; they are not opposite ends of the same spectrum. Based on the work of Fredrickson, we argue that positive emotion facilitates the building of resources because positive emotion tends to broaden a person’s perspective, opening the individual to absorb the lan- guage. In contrast, negative emotion produces the opposite tendency, a nar- rowing of focus and a restriction of the range of potential language input. This systematic review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of chronic feelings of emptiness in BPD, identify key findings, and clarify differences between chronic feelings of emptiness and related constructs like depression, hopelessness, and loneliness. METHOD: A PRISMA guided systematic search of the literature identified empirical studies with a focus on BPD or BPD symptoms that discussed chronic feelings of emptiness or a related construct. -
The Bakhtin Circle and Ancient Narrative
Epic, Novel, Genre: Bakhtin and the Question of History AHUVIA KAHANE Northwestern University 1. Mikhail Bakhtin has in the course of several major works attempted to characterize the literary forms of epic and novel, as well as the relationship between them. These efforts are important for the study of genre, and spe- cifically epic and novel, beyond which, however, lies a broader sphere. One should be careful not to oversimplify complex and detailed arguments or continuously evolving historical traditions.1 But as one scholar has put it, Bakhtin’s work proceeds from the view that ‘genres themselves are forms of thought that have made valuable discoveries about time, society and human agency’ (Morson 1999: 176).2 And it is fair to say that through Bakhtin’s arguments about the tensions between epic and novel we can trace his views on the historical development of certain modes of thought—or perhaps we should say Weltanschauung or Geist. Our reference to Geist suggests, of course, that Bakhtin’s work should be viewed within the context of a broad (progressionist) critical tradition that paid close attention to the historico- philosophical significance of artistic production, a tradition among whose members we may count, for example, Goethe, Schlegel, Hegel of course, Lukács, and Auerbach.3 Within this tradition, as in Bakhtin’s work, the gen- ————— 1 Bakhtin’s views on the relations of epic and novel carry different emphases in his differ- ent works.
