This is particularly illuminating given the highly competitive environment in which tour operators’ work, where they are under pressure to maximise the use of the natural resources before they deteriorate beyond use or, disappear completely. The study examined the websites of tour operators who operate in the Great Barrier Reef, Greenland and Mount Kilimanjaro and found that only a small proportion of tour operators currently use such techniques to promote their products. However, the operators that do have recently developed tours to allow tourists to experience the impact of global warming first hand and provide those tourists with opportunities to contribute financially and/or in kind to the conservation of the region. Areas of future research are identified. These events included a series of high-profile environmental disasters, escalation in human induced climate change, accelerating ozone depletion, increased incidence of dangerous viral and bacterial mutations and, rampant desertification and deforestation (Weaver and Lawton, 2006).
