PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: BREEDING STOCK SALES SEASON FINISHES STRONG AT FASIG-TIPTON by Brian DiDonato FEEDBACK POSITIVE FOR LEXINGTON, Ky--The second of two sessions of Fasig-Tipton=s Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale featured strong trade heading into VIOLENCE the opening of the breeding season later this month. The two-day sale saw gross receipts of $9,659,400 at an average of $29,539 and median of $15,000. Last year=s average was $28,673 with a $10,500 median. The buyback rate this year was 20.4%, compared to 22.7% 12 months ago. For Tuesday=s session, $4,982,200 changed hands at an average of $27,526 and median of $13,000. The RNA rate was a paltry 11.3%. AIt was a competitive marketplace from start to finish,@ said Fasig-Tipton President and Chief Executive Officer Boyd Browning, Jr. AThe first horse in the ring yesterday sold very well and the last horse in the ring today sold very well.@ Cont. p6

Daithi Harvey reports. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN Europe. justifiably ranks among America=s highest-priced stallions. After all, he had eight yearlings sell for $1 million or more at last year=s sales and, in 2017, he notched up the remarkable total of seven individual Grade I winners in the U.S. That's very good going for a horse who was priced no higher than $35,000 when he made his stud debut at Hill >n= Dale in 2005. With Medaglia d=Oro now 20, the search is on for his successor. Perhaps the search hasn=t been made any easier by the fact that fillies such as Rachel Alexandra, Songbird, Elate, Plum Pretty, Champagne d=Oro, Gabby=s Golden Gal, Marketing Mix and New Money Honey account for 12 of his 19 Northern Hemisphere Grade I winners. That said, there are sons of Medaglia d=Oro at several of Kentucky=s foremost stallion stations. While Coolmore hasn=t shuttled the champion Australian 2-year-old Vancouver for a third season at Ashford, Darley has traveled Astern, another of Medaglia d=Oro=s best Australian sons, for a second season in Kentucky. Then there=s the newly retired Bolt d=Oro at Spendthrift, with Fast Anna at Three Chimneys, Mshawish is at Taylor Made and both Atreides and Violence at Hill >n= Dale. Cont. p3

Positive Feedback for Violence (cont. from p1) A lot has been expected of Violence ever since he attracted a $600,000 bid from Steve Marshall=s Black Rock Stables at the yearling sales of 2011, when his price was bettered by only one other son of Medaglia d=Oro. That other son, the $1.2-million Superfection, never raced and was gelded, but Violence has proved to be worth every cent. A debut victory over seven furlongs at Saratoga earned Violence an immediate step up to Grade II company in the Nashua S. at Aqueduct. Victory was widely expected to go to Violence | Sarah Andrew Darwin, another Pletcher-trained colt, but it was Violence who short-priced favorite. He justified the confidence, maintaining overcame his greenness to score by two lengths. Talk Veuve to Me | Sarah Andrew The compilers of the Experimental Free Handicap shared Castellano=s enthusiasm, awarding Violence 123 pounds, which put him joint-second with He=s Had Enough among the males, three pounds below the unbeaten Shanghai Bobby. The GII Fountain of Youth S. was the next stop for Violence and he started odds-on, even though the race=s conditions meant he was set to give six pounds to all eight of his rivals. He nearly proved up to the task, but at the wire he was a half-length adrift of a progressive colt called Orb. While Orb went on to decisive Grade I victories in the Florida Derby and Kentucky Derby, Violence=s career ended in the Fountain of Youth. He was found to have suffered a fracture to a sesamoid. Violence is comfortably the highest priced of the Medaglia d=Oro sons mentioned above, with his fee having risen over the last three years from its original level of $15,000 to $25,000 and now to $40,000. The reasons for this latest rise are encapsulated in some of the data that appears in his Stallion Register details: A#1 Second Crop Sire by Cumulative SWs and SHs with 5 SWs and 8 SHs. AYearlings sold for $850,000, $725,000, $500,000, etc.@ His initial fee of $15,000 in 2014 ensured that Violence would be very attractive to mare owners. In addition to possessing good looks and a fashionable sire, he offered Grade I-winning juvenile form and a female line which featured the champion older female Sky Beauty as his third dam, the dual Grade I winner Maplejinsky as his fourth dam and Mr. Prospector=s champion sprinter Gold Beauty as his fifth dam. Sure enough, mares flocked to Violence, with nearly 700 of them visiting him during the four years he was priced at $15,000. He attracted another 214 in 2018, when his fee was $25,000. Violence winning the GI Hollywood Futurity | Benoit

He now holds first place on the TDN=s list of Leading Third-Crop Sires, both by cumulative earnings and for the current year. The cumulative table credits him with 105 winners, of which 13 have won black-type events and three are graded stakes winners. The latest of those graded winners is Feedback, who landed the GIII Forward Gal S. over seven furlongs. Her predecessors are Cosmic Burst (GIII Honeybee S.) and Talk Veuve To Me (GIII Indian ). It is significant, in view of Medaglia d=Oro=s record, that all three of Violence=s graded winners are fillies, as is Vibrance, who--like the GI Acorn S. second Talk Veuve To Me-- has been runner-up at Grade I level. I tend to think this is simply coincidence, as there are plenty of colts among his 22 black-type horses. Perhaps because his progeny have often sold for substantial amounts, I find myself wishing that he had a few more top-level performers to his credit. However, it=s important to remember that all of Violence=s racing-aged progeny were sired at $15,000 and that his second-crop 3-year-olds haven=t had many opportunities. His >TDN Rising Star= Feedback was racing for only the second time when she landed the Forward Gal S. Feedback=s pedigree suggests she may be capable of shining at a higher level. Her dam, the Grade III-placed Honest Answer, is a half-sister to I Ain't Bluffing, a Pine Bluff filly who enjoyed Grade I success in California over seven furlongs at three (La Brea S.) and 1 1/16 miles at four (Milady H.). Another of Honest Answer=s half-sisters, Sweet As Honey, produced Borrego, a high-class 1 1/4-mile winner to a mating with Medaglia d=Oro=s sire El Prado.

La Manta Gris | Fasig-Tipton

Browning contined, AIt=s kind of amazing to be standing in the back walking ring when the last horses are going through sale in February and people are asking, >Can you bring some more in here?= The most common complaint I had from consignors was that they wished they had more horses because it was a very solid and strong marketplace throughout.@ Tuesday=s session topper--a supplemental offering and the last hip through the ring--was $285,000 racing or broodmare prospect La Manta Gris (Lemon Drop Kid) (hip 531), who was consigned by Lane=s End and signed for by agent David Ingordo. The day=s top short yearling was a $75,000 Palace colt (hip 334) consigned by Endeavor Farm. Bill Williams purchased the New York-bred. The overall sale topper came Monday when graded stakes- winning broodmare prospect Cheekaboo (Unusual Heat) garnered a $300,000 winning bid from K R Japan. She was consigned as hip 57 by Small Batch Sales on behalf of Ciaglia Racing. AI think we might start seeing a little more expansion in terms of supply and demand maybe getting a bit more in line,@ Browning noted. AThere seems to be a little more broadening of the band in terms of pedigree and physical conformation on some of the mares. There seem to be more people re-entering or willing to buy broodmares who may not have been doing so three or four years ago, and not just at the top end but in the $20,000 to $50,000 level, which is encouraging and provides some stability.@ The 13 priciest lots of the sale were purchased by different entities. AThere was no market maker [this year],@ Browning said. AWe=ve seen it occasionally in past years that someone will come in that has a new stallion and they=re trying to buy 30 or 40 and that kind of pushed everything.@ TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 7 OF 13 • THETDN.COM WEDNESDAY • FEBRUARY 6, 2019

FTKFEB cont. Browning continued, AIt does show you some strength and broadening of the market that there wasn=t an individual market maker, just a lot of people bidding on horses throughout the two days.@ Fasig-Tipton=s next sale will be the boutique Gulfstream Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds Mar. 27. AI=m like a kid in a candy store with regards to the quality of the catalog we have for the Gulfstream sale,@ said Browning. AIt=s in the oven--it=s at the printers--and it will be a really, really strong catalog both in terms of pedigrees and physical conformation... People want a good horse. Ingordo on Both Sides of Topper Transaction

David Ingordo | Fasig-Tipton

Prominent agent David Ingordo picked up a familiar face as the last hip through the ring at Fasig-Tipton=s Winter Mixed Sale. He=d already purchased La Manta Gris (Lemon Drop Kid) on behalf of former professional baseball player and current Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli when she sold for $130,000 as an OBS March 2-year-old in 2016, and he was left holding the ticket Tuesday once she was hammered down for $285,000. The twice stakes-placed earner of $211,000 was consigned as hip 531 by Lane=s End, for which Ingordo works. ARocco Baldelli is a pretty good friend of mine and I bought her as a 2-year-old for Rocco,@ Ingordo noted. ABecause of business obligations, he had to sell her. I thought she=d be a nice addition to our broodmare band at the farm. LEVY BOARD AVOIDS APR. 1 ABOLITION SHOWCASING COLT TAKES The British government has withdrawn legislation that would THE HONOURS AT GOFFS result in the abolition of the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) on Apr. 1, the Racing Post reported on Tuesday. The Levy was extended to include betting operators based overseas after the government tweaked the central funding system in 2017. Another round of planned reforms began last fall, with the Gambling Commission due to take on the collection duties of the Levy Board and spending decisions rerouted to a new Racing Authority consisting of representatives after secondary legislation was introduced. That legislation reform order was halted when the secondary legislation was objected to on procedural reasons by a joint committee of MP=s and peers in December. In the latest development, the government has withdrawn that LRO, but the Levy will remain under government review. Cont. p8

Lot 248, a son of Showcasing topped Tuesday=s session | Goffs IN TDN AMERICA TODAY PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: FEEDBACK POSITIVE FOR VIOLENCE R by Daith Harvey Andrew Caulfield examines the burgeoning stallion career of KILDARE, Ireland--Goffs got their 2019 sales season off to a Violence (Medaglia d’Oro) and his GSW Feedback, who won the respectable start on Tuesday when the opening day of the GIII Forward Gal S. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN February Sale posted a predictable set of results given the America. current European bloodstock climate. Last year's top-priced yearling sold for i130,000 and Tuesday's topper came in just below that when Philipp Stauffenberg bid i120,000 for a son of Showcasing (GB) offered by Paul and Sara Thorman's Trickledown Stud. Last year's opening session had 66 less horses catalogued so direct comparisons are difficult; however Tuesday's aggregate of i2,026,700 for 134 sold fares quite favourably with last year's opening day tally of i1,367,900 for 120 sold. The average for the day was i15,125 (+6%) while the median was i7,000 (-7%) when compared to all of the short yearlings that went under the hammer during the 2018 sale. Trade was undoubtedly tough for a lot of vendors on Tuesday however and the clearance rate of 62% backs up that theory. For much of the day the pace had been set by a pair of i100,000 yearlings by Sea The Stars (Ire) and Lope De Vega (Ire), but when lot 248 entered the ring, admittedly after some cajoling from Paul Thorman, it soon became clear that this colt would also be making six figures. "He wasn't cheap and I had to stretch but I am very glad to get him," he said. "I like him a lot and he is out of a fast filly who is a big rangy mare herself and this horse is a great walker. Ed Harper [of Whitsbury Manor Stud] tells me the Showcasing/Pivotal cross is one of the best for the stallion, so I hope that turns out to be the case. He is for resale so hopefully he goes the right way." Stauffenberg made a big contribution to the sale as he has had earlier purchased a son of Belardo (Ire), lot 113, for i52,000. Offered by Gerry Callanan's Nanallac Stud the colt is a half-brother to two stakes performers including the Listed Bosra Sham S. winner Cape Factor (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}). Cont. p3

Goffs February Sale Results Cont. "I tried to buy a few by Belardo last year but was unsuccessful, so I am very happy to have purchased this colt," Stauffenberg said afterwards. "He is a quality horse, one of the nicest here today I thought but is a May foal so he will most likely come back for one of the later yearling sales in October. He is closely related to four 100+ rated horses, so his pedigree stacks up and I thought there was a lot of Lope De Vega about him also." The first yearling of the day to breach the six-figure mark was one of the supplementary entries lot 140A, a Sea The Stars (Ire) colt offered by Ballintry Stud which sold to Uzbekistan native Avaz Ismoilov for i100,000. The colt is the second produce out of the mare Fly On The Night (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) who was champion 2-year-old filly in Italy in 2015 and he was reared and Cathy Grassick | Goffs prepped by Joe Rogers of Ballintry Stud who indicated the yearling would probably go to France to race. "I'm delighted with the price," said Rogers. "He's a very "She is a beautiful filly by an established top-class stallion who athletic horse with plenty of quality and comes from a good fast is doing particularly well with fillies," Grassick said after signing family. He's been a pleasure to prep and took everything in his for the half-sister to five winners out of the stakes-placed mare stride." Maramba (Hussonet). "I've bought her on behalf of an existing client who will offer her for resale." After a muted start, the auction was suddenly brought to life when a Dark Angel (Ire) colt from Drumachon Stud came into the ring. Lot 22 is a full-brother to the former Michael Dods- trained multiple stakes winner Easton Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and the bids came hard and fast for the son of Staceymac (Ire) (Elnadim) with Gay O'Callaghan's bid of i80,000 sealing the deal.

Avaz Ismoilov | Goffs Ballintry Stud is based not far from Fairyhouse Racecourse and is home to around 25 boarding mares and it has been a rewarding few months for the farm. "We sold a Shalaa (Ire) colt here in November for i125,000 and results like this are important to us," Rogers said. Meanwhile Avaz Ismoilov made a number of purchases on Tuesday including a No Nay Never filly (lot 93) for i20,000 and he also owns the Meydan regular Furia Cruzada (Chi) (Newfoundland) who won the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2 two years ago and was most recently third in the G2 Cape Verdi last month. Given the year her sire Lope De Vega (Ire) had in 2018, it was no surprise that lot 206 proved popular and and it took a bid of i100,000 from Cathy Grassick to land the Tara Stud consigned yearling. t

Matt Houldsworth of Howson & Houldsworth picked up lot 23, a colt by Ballyhane Stud stallion Dandy Man (Ire) that cost i35,000. Offered by Hill Head, the colt's full-brother Erich Bloch (Ire) showed smart form in maidens last year for Ger Lyons, finishing second three times before winning at Naas in November. Erich Bloch went from a i38,000 foal to a ,100,000 yearling and Houldsworth is hoping for something similar with this March born colt. "I've bought him for myself, Geoffrey [Howson] and a group of friends. His own brother is a smart horse and the stallion had a great year in 2018 so let's hope both continue to progress as he'll be re-offered at the sales in the autumn." Moyglare Stud brought a nicely bred draft of yearlings to the Gay O=Callaghan | Goffs sale and among those they traded on were lot 191, a son of Zoffany (Ire) that sold to Castlehyde Stud for i46,000 and lot 110, a colt by Australia (GB) bought by Goodwill Bloodstock for Goffs February Sale Results Cont. i40,000. He will be back for resale in the autumn." There was plenty of competition for the more sought after yearlings and it took a bid of i87,000 from Noel Hayes to Goffs February Sale Day 2 Outs: 274, 275, 282, 288, 305, 309, secure lot 70, a filly by Kodiac (GB) offered by The Castlebridge 315, 319, 320, 321, 324, 328, 330, 332, 336, 348, 355, 358, 360, Consignment on behalf of breeder Ennistown Stud. Hayes signed the docket under M D Investments and said, "She was easily our pick of the day and she is a quality filly with a great page. I've bought her for a set of investors and she should have no trouble getting into a yearling sale of our choice later in the year." Awtaad's popularity in the sales ring carried on from last year when his son out of G1 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Aoife Alainn (Ire) (Dr Fong) came into the ring. Lot 82 eventually went the way of Bobby O'Ryan for i65,000 and it appears likely the Deer Forest Stud-bred colt will return to a sales ring later his year. There was a strong buying presence at Goffs from mainland Europe and Marc Antoine Berghgracht of France based MAB Agency made his presence felt when going to i60,000 to acquire Rathbarry Stud's daughter of Camelot (GB). Lot 243 received a pedigree boost recently when Gorgeous Noora (Ire) (Raven's Pass), a half-sister to this filly's dam, finished second in a listed race at Lingfield last weekend. WITH SHANE POWER This is the final installment in the Young Guns series, where we catch up with young professionals in the Thoroughbred business about their experiences and ambitions. We close out the series with Shane Power of Tradewinds Stud.

TDN: Tell us about your career to date.

SP: My career in the Thoroughbred industry began when I met Robert O'Callaghan at a pony club event when we were about 12. We became friends and as a result of this I began to spend time in Yeomanstown Stud, eventually culminating in me working there for six years. The grounding in work ethic, commercial awareness and horsemanship I received during my time there will always stand out to me. I also learned a great deal whilst doing part time work in Kildaragh Stud through befriending Roderic Kavanagh. In 2016 I completed the Irish National Stud Thoroughbred Breeding Course--it is a course I could not recommend highly enough. I also spent time in Arrowfield Stud in Australia, which was another tremendous experience and one I would advise any young person in the industry to pursue. My first venture into Thoroughbred stock came when three friends and I bought a Rock of Gibraltar mare for i16,000. We sold her foals for a few years for modest profit. My first significant success came when I pinhooked a Champs Elysees filly with two friends for i9,000 into i65,000. It was after this I knew what I wanted to do full time. Last year we had our best year so far in the sales ring, pinhooking a No Nay Never and a Footstepsinthesand for a very satisfactory return.

TDN: If you could be one person in the industry for a day, who would it be and why?

SP: I would have to say Jim Bolger. The ambition he showed to set up his own self-sufficient racing and breeding empire is something I have always admired. It is an amazing brain and personality that can run such a successful business and be a top- class trainer and breeder all at once. Cont. p7

Young Guns: Shane Power Cont. TDN: What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

SP: After I had flunked out of college for the second year in a row my dad advised me not to go for the hat-trick. He told me instead to start up my own business and so far his advice has been vindicated, thank God. College is not for everyone, but I am constantly trying to better educate myself. The difference is I can be much more specific as to what I am educating myself on.

TDN: What is the best aspect of your current job?

SP: The buzz of a public auction is something I have always loved. The rush of adrenalin seeing your own horse go under the hammer is something I love as it is so unpredictable. On a day- to-day basis, working for myself allows me to be a bit more flexible with my working hours, which I like.

TDN: If you weren't in the horse racing industry what would you be doing?

SP: Without a shadow of a doubt I would be unsuccessfully trying to carve out a career as a professional golfer. I love golf but it doesn't really love me.

TDN: If you had 24 hours to get someone interested in the TDN: What was your biggest achievement in 2018? horse racing industry how would you do it? SP: Somehow managing to not go broke in my first year working SP: I would take them to the Punchestown Festival, where I for myself, especially when the lower and middle end of the would shuttle them from the parade ring to the stands to the yearling market was so selective. We prepped two yearlings for Bollinger tent in a continuous cycle. Then into the parade ring a priest last year and successfully sold them both for him. Court Hotel to celebrate the new purchase. TDN: Who was your horse of 2018 and why?

SP: I love a good comeback, so when (Ire) came back to win at the Punchestown Festival I was going bonkers. I think he is a horse that has really endeared himself to the racing public and the reception he received that day was heartwarming. He is an absolute legend.

TDN: What was your New Year's Resolution?

SP: Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are worth about $60 billion each. They both say that reading more than 50 books a year is one of the biggest secrets to their wealth. So I figure if I read a book a month this year I will be a billionaire in no time. 2019, a book a month.
