FORD and K. G. McWHIRTER Genetics Laboratory, Department of Zoology, Oxford Received5.X.6t 1.INTRODUCTION WEhave already demonstrateddemonstrated thatthat thethe A'IaniolaManiola jurtina populations in Southern England, from West Devon to the North Sea, are char- acterised by relatively low average spot-numbers, having a female frequency-distribution unimodal at o spots. Also that in East Cornwall thethe spottingspotting hashas aa higherhigher averageaverage valuevalue inin bothboth sexessexes andand isis bimodal, bimodal, at o and 2 spots, in the females (Creed et al., 1959). In 1956 we studied the transition between thethe twotwo typestypes inin aa transecttransect runningrunning twotwo milesmiles south of Launceston, approximately midway between the north and south Coastscoasts ofof thethe Devon-CornwallDevon-Cornwall peninsula.peninsula. We found that the one form of spotting changed abruptly to the other in a few yards without any barrier between them and that the distinction between the two increased as they approached each other (the "reversedine " effect). TheseThese features features persistedpersisted thethe followingfollowing year, yet the point of transition had shifted; for the East Cornish type had advanced three miles eastwards, indicating that the two spot-distributions represent alternative types of stabilisation. This situation is so exceptional that it seemed essential to test whether or not it is widespread along the interface between the Southern English and East Cornish forms and if it were maintained in subsequent years. The results of that investigation are described in this article.

VOLUME 1 OF 2 CIVILIAN EVACUATION TO DEVON IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR Submitted by S.J. HESS as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History, 2006 CIVILIAN EVACUATION TO DEVON IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR Submitted by Susan Jane Hess, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History, July 2006. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ………………………………………. 1 ABSTRACT Extensive sources have been reviewed and analysed to piece together for the first time a detailed academic study of civilian evacuation to Devon1 viewed against the national backdrop. The primary focus of this thesis is the large number of unaccompanied children who were officially evacuated to the County under the auspices of the Government Evacuation Scheme during the Second World War. However, Chapter Six discusses the evacuation of mothers and accompanying children, unofficial (private) evacuees and private school parties. The majority of evacuated children arriving in Devon originated from the London area and southeastern counties. In addition large numbers of children were also evacuated to the County from Bristol and within the County from Plymouth (Devon) during 1941 and briefly from Exeter in May 1942. Each of the three national evacuation waves is considered individually throughout the text as they are quite distinct in complexion, a fact frequently ignored in generalised accounts which tend to focus on reaction to the initial wave.

It will be performed by a company of five dancers. Inspired by the similarities between the England's only natural World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast and the Skeleton Coast of Namibia and created in direct response to Maqoma's recent piece Skeleton Dry, the work is an exploration and reflection on the two very different regions, which are united through the rocks on which they stand.
